  Partant du constat que la plupart des chercheurs sont confrontés à un moment ou à un autre à la question de la marge – qu’elle soit objet de sa recherche ou qu’elle devienne un problème méthodologique –, les doctorants du Centre Jean-Mabillon accompagnés de doctorants de l’EPHE (ED 472 et de ED 188), non spécialistes du sujet mais séduits par ses potentialités réflexives pour les chercheurs en formation, proposent de s’interroger sur la notion et le concept de marge, pris au sens large, le 16 juin 2016 à l’occasion de la journée d’étude annuelle des doctorants du Centre Jean- Mabillon.

  Creating the Europe 1600-1815 Galleries

  This conference celebrates the opening of the V&A’s new Europe 1600-1815 Galleries. It will introduce some of the new patterns of living that laid the foundations for our modern world. The papers will be presented according to the three main themes that create a narrative structure for the displays and interpretation in the galleries: first, that, for the first time ever, Europeans systematically explored, exploited, and collected resources from Africa, Asia and the Americas in their art and design; second, that France took over from Italy as leader of fashion and art in the second half of the 17th century; and third, that ways of living came to resemble those we know today.

  From Xenakis to the present: the Continuum in music and architecture

  Continuum 2016

  Since the Classical era and the Middle Ages, and in particular since Plato’s Timeus, the concept of continuum has preoccupied thinkers. In the early 20^th century, this notion was reactivated by the theory of relativity as well as other theories such as the uncertainty principle, changing our perception of the world, and consequently artistic discourse. We propose to examine where we are today in terms of the concept of continuum, both in theory and in practice. An interdisciplinary approach will enable us to evaluate the relevancy of this notion, comparing and contrasting it with other methodologies, during this international conference.

  This symposium aims to cover some major questions raised by law’s (actual or alleged) indeterminacy, such as claims that law is systemically indeterminate, or that every very indeterminacy in the law  is due to linguistic indetermincacy, such as vagueness and open texture. Relations between indeterminacy and interpretation, judicial discretion, politics and the rule of law will also be dealt with.

  Collective emotions

  Since the writings of the first social psychologists and sociologists of the 20th century, collective behavior has continuously been perceived as a fundamental threat to social and political order. When immersed in large groups, individuals are thought to lose any capacity of self-evaluation and to show anti-social behavior. In crowds, the increased sensitivity to others’ emotions – whose power of contagion was long thought to be as intense as that of infectious diseases – is supposed to turn a reunion of perfectly rational humans into a group of violent rioters. Furthermore, the primordial role of mass movements during the era of totalitarianisms has, without any doubt, reinforced the idea that collective emotions are essentially harmful, for both individuals and communities.

  Staging American Bodies

  For this seventh International Symposium on Staging America, we invite scholars to explore the various ways in which American bodies have been staged and represented throughout history and through various media. From P.T. Barnum’s freak shows to modern-day tattoo conventions, from Carson McCullers’ and Flannery O’Connor’s grotesque characters to twenty-first century sideshows, bodies have always been a source of both attraction and repulsion. The fascination triggered by deformities – whether natural or self-inflicted – reveals as much about Americans’ conceptions of normality, hence of identity, as it does about the nature of the body itself.

  Poets on the Walls. Street Art and Poetry

  Horace’s famous simile Ut Pictura Poesis introduced the idea that painting and poetry are two sister arts and as such, they have attracted the attention of researchers in the fields of literature and art. Although it is characterized by its poetic writing and includes many references to poets, street art has been paradoxically excluded from the scope of these investigations. Pursuing the research started with its first event « Street Art, Contours et Détours », the Nice Street Art Project is pleased to announce a second edition focusing on street art and poetry.

  Forms of (the) Apocalypse

  Au début du XXI^e siècle, les thèmes apocalyptiques et post-apocalyptiques envahissent tout autant les bulletins d’information du monde réel que la fiction, dans un contexte culturel dominé par les peurs qui ont accompagné l’histoire des hommes (prophéties religieuses annonçant l’apocalypse et la révélation, peur des fléaux susceptibles d’anéantir l’humanité, etc.). Parallèlement, les transformations technologiques rapides ont ouvert d’innombrables possibilités, y compris celle d’un devenir « posthumain ». Ce que « Formes d(e l’) Apocalypse » se propose alors d’explorer ne se limite pas à la simple persistance des peurs apocalyptiques archaïques ou à l‘émergence de nouvelles frayeurs, mais prend en compte les discours et les motifs spécifiques de l’apocalypse, véhiculés par la littérature, le cinéma et autres formes.

  This two-day symposium will bring together researchers and practitioners with expertise in music, dance and the brain, in order to initiate an interdisciplinary conversation on the fundamental role of pleasure of music and dance in human life. The study of music and dance is well established within the social sciences and the humanities, and has started to become studied in neuroscience in recent years, but these different approaches are rarely brought together in a constructive conversation. The main aim is to explore different scholarly perspectives on the role of pleasure and emotions in music, dance and the brain by bringing together these scholarly perspectives with insights into the practice of dance and music.

  Contemporary reappropriations of ancient philosophy

  Vie bonne, vulnérabilité, commun-s sont quelques uns des nouveaux thèmes privilégiés de la philosophie morale, sociale et politique contemporaine. Ce colloque tente de comprendre ce que les philosophes contemporain-e-s empruntent à l’Antiquité, et comment ils et elles travaillent ces thématiques fondatrices de la pensée ancienne, et comment ils et elles en viennent ainsi à poser à nouveaux frais la question de la vie bonne, de la fragilité, du commun. Ces thématiques font en effet l’objet d’une problématisation singulière qui n’est pas la répétition stérile des questionnements des anciens, et qu’il importe d’interroger tout à la fois dans ce qui en fait l’actualité (pourquoi ces questions s’imposent à nous aujourd’hui ?) et dans ce qu’elle révèle d’actualité des anciens (pourquoi la référence aux anciens s’impose-t-elle à nous ?).
