Cultivating one’s own garden, expanding horizons

Mapping the personal and the collective through history of art and the humanities, from Impressionism to the present day

The Seine has shaped the history of the Impressionist movement, which, in turn, left a lasting mark on the land. The research framework of this programme places the focus on this influential geographical backdrop, as part of a broader reflection on our regions. Housing traditions, ways of life, social structures, land uses, and the impact of agricultural and industrial development on the landscape are just some of the lines of research that require further study about Impressionism. This summer school aims to open up new perspectives through cross-disciplinary collaboration while experimenting with scales of analysis, to reflect on the experience of land from the most personal to the most universal.

Entre l’« Orient » et l’« Occident » : représentations en miroir

Cette journée d’étude a pour objet de penser les imaginaires croisés de l’« Orient » et de l’« Occident » au sein des productions théâtrales et spectaculaires, opératiques et cinématographiques de diverses aires culturelles. Ces imaginaires se reflètent les uns dans les autres et se répondent, et ils contribuent à fabriquer des hiérarchies aux effets bien réels. Le champ d’étude sera restreint, d’un côté, aux espaces géographiques qui constituent l’ancienne « route de la soie » (en partant de l’Égypte et de la Turquie pour aller jusqu’à la Chine et au Japon, en passant par l’Iran et l’Inde); de l’autre, à une Europe aux contours en perpétuelle redéfinition. Les contributions se concentreront sur la période allant du XVI^e au XXI^e siècle.

Queer Ecologies Across State Socialisms brings queer ecology into dialogue with the cultural, institutional, and environmental histories of global state socialist worlds. The journal aims to represent the diversity of current fields of research in music, most broadly defined, and welcomes submissions informed by all music-related disciplines, as well as multi- and interdisciplinary scholarship. This issue of K@iros seeks to study the Spanish and Greek civil wars from a cultural history perspective, highlighting parallel discourses and practices of remembrance while identifying the specific characteristics of each conflict’s memory, linked to the internal dynamics of the two societies. The aim is to study the registers, temporalities and scales of memory of these two historical sequences, both within the societies and through the memorial heritage in other spaces. The aim will be to retrace the parallel paths taken by these memories and their intersecting destinies in the multiple media (press, cinema, literature, photography, museums).

Journée d’étude de l’AFHRC

La prochaine journée d’étude de l’Association française d’histoire religieuse contemporaine (AFHRC) porte sur la question financière, appréhendée comme l’un des lieux à partir duquel il est possible de saisir les processus de modernisation (et de résistances à la modernisation) qui touchent les religions à l’époque contemporaine. Le problème renvoie à des enjeux de natures très diverses. Se pose d’abord une question qui ressort de l’histoire économique : celle de l’argent des religions et, plus généralement, de leurs possessions. Un autre axe de recherche potentiellement fécond est celui de l’histoire des représentations. Le lien entre certaines religions et l’essor du capitalisme a ainsi pu être souligné, que ce soit pour le saluer, pour le dénoncer ou simplement pour y voir un facteur explicatif de certains processus historiques.

Calligraphies at the Frontiers of the Islamicate World: Practices, Circulations, and Appropriations

This conference marks the conclusion of the research programme CallFront, dedicated to the study of Arabic-script calligraphy at the frontiers of the Islamic world. It will explore several themes central to the project, including the evolution of styles, the transmission of knowledge and calligraphic practices, as well as the symbolic and spiritual dimensions of certain uses of writing. The event will also highlight the programme’s achievements, with a round table devoted to the contribution of digital tools to the analysis of scripts, a presentation of the publications produced within the framework of the project, and the screening of a film based on fieldwork missions, offering an immersive insight into the practices under study.

Entre la fin du XIVᵉ et le XVIIᵉ siècle, les mobilités s’intensifient en Europe occidentale et transforment durablement les pratiques artistiques et culturelles. Les déplacements d’artistes, d’artisans, de marchands, de religieux et d’intellectuels favorisent la circulation et la recomposition des savoirs, des modèles et des techniques. Ces dynamiques se prolongent à l’époque moderne, dans un contexte d’échanges élargi, à l’échelle européenne et extra-européenne. Cette journée d’étude propose d’analyser ces mobilités et les cadres qui les structurent. Elle vise à mieux comprendre leur rôle dans la formation de l’espace culturel européen.

Rereading, (re)emergence, appropriation: What is to be done with the art of the past?

The writings of art historians, like the works of art themselves, are a place of emergence, return, and incessant reinterpretation. This dialogue between periods at the heart of both artistic creation and the narrative of our discipline will be the subject of the 2026 edition of the Ecole de Printemps. Proposals for papers could present case studies, where a work or body of work quotes, repeats, adopts, or readapts earlier images, objects, or monuments. They might analyse historiographical reinterpretations by considering them as transhistorical interventions and reappropriations – whether textual, visual or museum-based.
