  Rebuilding / Restoring Rome

  The Renewal of Buildings and Spaces as Urban Policy, from Antiquity to the Present

  Everywhere in Rome, monuments are covered with ancient or modern inscriptions that not only contain the name of the original builder but also commemorate their restoration. Popes from the Quattrocento and Cinquecento who acted as urban planners, such as Sixtus IV, presented themselves as ‘restorers’, even when they were actually modernising the City. This phenomenon is not restricted to the Renaissance period: many Roman emperors already claimed to be rebuilders, such as Augustus who repaired all the damaged temples of Rome according to the Res Gestae, or Septimius Severus who was called Restitutor Vrbis on his coinage. Rome thus seems to be a city that constantly needs to be restored, rebuilt, born again. This conference aims to investigate how the notions of restoration and rebuilding were a driving force of Rome’s urban transformation throughout its history, from Antiquity to the 21^st century, as well as a political program put forward by the authorities and an ideal more or less shared by the different key actors of the city.

Nous retenons, de manière non exhaustive, les domaines du tourisme, de la culture, de l’environnement et du développement durable, du changement climatique, de l’entrepreneuriat culturel et créatif, de l’entrepreneuriat social. Trois axes permettront d’aborder ces regards complémentaires.

  Living and bringing alive the Middle Ages

  L’objectif de ce colloque interdisciplinaire est de questionner les nombreux usages des savoirs historiques sur la période médiévale, ses diverses réceptions et ces détournements dans les médiévalismes contemporains. Les médiations qui interviennent pour assurer l’émergence de Moyen Âge dans le présent sont au cœur des problématiques actuelles de l’histoire vivante et de la médiation culturelle dans les musées, les bibliothèques, les fêtes médiévales ou d’autres lieux de médiévalité. Depuis quelques temps un important corpus de dispositifs a été rassemblé, illustrant les nombreuses facettes de cette offre de Moyen Âge. Il s’agit désormais d’encourager, dans le  sillage des  heritage studies, et ce à partir d’enquêtes situées, des angles d’approche encore peu usités, tels la place faite aux femmes, le rôle assignés aux enfants, la mise en œuvre et l’usage des dispositifs participatifs, ou encore la manière dont ces Moyen Âge ressuscités animent les traces (artefacts, monuments, archives, etc.) et agissent sur leur représentation.

  Florence, a city of art, and the French - the creation of a myth

  L’objet du colloque est le rôle des Français dans la construction d’un mythe de Florence comme « ville d’art » à travers l’histoire, l’histoire de l’art et les diverses formes de production artistique. À Florence, plus que partout ailleurs en Italie, la beauté de la ville, le paysage urbain, les grands artistes et leurs chefs-d’œuvre ont fait l’objet d’un véritable processus de mythification culturelle depuis le XIX^e siècle. Florence apparaît ainsi dans la culture française comme un lieu central et idéal dont le souvenir et les représentations infusent très largement la conception générale des arts, de l’humanisme, de la Renaissance italienne, du génie artistique. Si la vivacité du mythe florentin a été bien étudiée chez nos voisins européens, en particulier en Angleterre et en Allemagne, la présence des Français à Florence, l’importance du mythe florentin et ses développements intellectuels et artistiques en France ont été relativement négligés par la critique.

  L’objectif de ces deux journées d’étude est de croiser différentes approches des dispositifs numériques en art et en design sous l’égide de la notion d’archéologie. Par leurs productions, des artistes et designers se confrontent aux fonctionnements des « dispositifs » autoritaires du philosophe Giorgio Agamben et peuvent en exhumer des principes philosophiques et esthétiques. Les enjeux archéologiques permettent ainsi de réinterroger les notions de « média », « médium », d’« intermédialité » ou d’« œuvre multiple » à travers l’étude des « effets secondaires » des dispositifs de représentation et de production en série.

  Criminal lament ballads in France after 1870: archiving, analysis and promotion of a little-known corpus

  The criminal lament ballad – in the strict sense of the term, a sung text narrating for informational or moral purposes the details of an authentic criminal case – has a long history, running from 16th century pieces to the “bloody newssheets” of the early 19th century. Saved from oblivion by collectors or scholars, these pieces have nevertheless been too little studied. The aim of this conference is to set up the foundations for a new pluridisciplinary approach to the criminal lament ballads, which can be considered as additional sources for the exploration of the history of crime and punishment, the history of popular literature, of ancestors of “alternative” media, or the history of popular musical tastes.

  Press and heritage - two factors of modernity (18th-19th centuries)

  Cette journée d'étude sur la presse et le patrimoine au XVIIIe et au XIXe siècles vise à explorer les rapports complexes entre deux notions contemporaines : loin de s'opposer comme l'imprimerie et l'architecture chez Hugo, elles sont deux émanations de la modernité. Ces deux termes renvoient en fait à deux conceptions de l'histoire et du bien public qui interagissent l'une avec l'autre pour définir de nouveaux cadres culturels du XVIIIe siècle au XIXe siècle. Les propositions attendues peuvent porter aussi bien sur les rapports matériels entre les deux notions (le patrimoine dans la presse, la presse comme patrimoine) que sur les procédures ou les modalités d'écriture communes (l'inventaire, l'enquête).

  L’idée de la patrimonialisation des traditions en rapport avec le spectacle vivant, nous met en face des difficultés majeures de toute tradition à savoir l’insuccès et l’usure. C’est justement ce qui est sous tendu par la question fédératrice de ce colloque « Que faire des formes spectaculaires vivantes ? ». Répondre à une telle question dépendra en premier lieu d’une autre opération aussi vitale, nous semble-t-il, qui est d’abord le constat de l’existant ou le diagnostic de l’état des lieux de ces formes spectaculaires traditionnelles, pour voir comment elles ont survécue, comment elles ont résisté aux multiples risques de déformations et de glissements contenus dans les différentes transmissions culturelles qu’elles subissent et qui peuvent entrainer des formes plus ou moins dégénérées.

  Text as object in the Middle Ages

  The International Medieval Congress (IMC) is the largest medieval studies conference in the world. In line with the Special Thematic Strand in 2019 “Materialities” and the recent creation of the strand “Manuscript studies”, we organize sessions on “Text as object in the Middle Ages”. Texts, indeed, are at the same time an idea and a form. The latter is the result of a combination of inherited social uses and specific intentions by the various actors involved in transmitting the text as idea. This process begins with the authors, continues to the craftsmen (parchment and paper makers, copyists and chancery clerks, painters and illuminators, sculptors and weavers, booksellers…) and then on to possessors, readers, archives and libraries. All textual artefacts are concerned: manuscripts, charters, inscriptions, tapestries, seals, coins, etc.

  This conference is an opportunity to pay tribute to Maurice Sixto, for his significant lodyans. The year 2019 is indeed the centenary of birth of this master of the spoken word, born in May 1919, and the 35^thanniversary of his passing, which occurred in May 1984. The contemporaneous legacy of Maurice Sixto encompasses various categories of lodyanseurs, among whom former cultural colleagues, talented impersonators, original interpreters and contemporaneous storytellers who, directly or indirectly, recognize themselves through the influence of the master. This event will be the occasion to discuss the multidimensional, psycho-sociological, didactic and aesthetic value of Sixto’s work.

Organized by the International Centre for Research on Slavery and Post-Slavery (CIRESC) and the Musée d'Aquitaine, it proposes to study the processes and forms of rewriting and transmission of the history of enslavment and trades based on the gestures involved around and from museum collections and their exhibitions.

Por parte de numerosos gobiernos, estatales o regionales, existe una voluntad de conocer el patrimonio alimentario de las poblaciones con el propósito de proponer políticas de fomento productivo y de iniciar procesos de desarrollo local mediante la valorización de los productos y cocinas locales.   The European Industrial Heritage of the First World War

  The First World War marked the history of Europe. It has been characterized by an unprecedented effort in industrial production, which today constitutes a common European heritage. The industrial heritage of the First World War, however, seems to be invisible: it is not identified or even defined as such, whereas this war was characterized by the massive use of industrial technology, both in the field of the production of weapons, aircraft and chemicals for military purposes as well as in the civil sector, particularly for agri-food production. It is interesting to note that conversely, the industrial heritage of the Reconstruction could be the subject of work. The organization of a European symposium, the first on this theme, is essential in order to establish an inventory of the material traces that still exist today and to draw the attention of the public authorities to the need to ensure their conservation.

  Call for applications for the Louvre Museum doctoral workshop

  L’École du Louvre et le musée du Louvre (Centre Dominique-Vivant Denon) organisent durant l’année universitaire 2018-2019, sous la forme d’un séminaire doctoral, un atelier de troisième cycle, sur le thème : « Faire voir : exposer, présenter,  mettre en scène les collections dans le musée ». Ce qu’on nomme communément en anglais le « display » constitue un objet de recherche relativement récent. L’étude des dispositifs de présentation des objets, dans l’espace muséal, se situe au carrefour de plusieurs disciplines. Elle suscite un intérêt croissant chez les historiens de l’art et des collections, les muséologues, les muséographes, ainsi que chez les professionnels du musée qui s’interrogent sur le discours produit par la sélection et le mode de présentation d’objets et d’œuvres d’art.
