  Students, intellectuals and foreign and post-colonial artists in France in the 1968 period

  L’historiographie « des années 68 » a récemment privilégié une approche globale des mouvements sociaux, mettant l’accent sur les circulations et les échanges d’un pays ou d’un continent à l’autre. Cette historiographie est très riche, comme l’est aussi celle concernant plus spécifiquement le Mai français. Il demeure néanmoins quelques angles morts, ou quelques terrains qui n’ont pas été explorés. L’un de ceux-ci est l’objet de ce colloque. Il s’agit du rôle des étudiants étrangers voire plus largement des intellectuels et artistes étrangers (écrivains, artistes, musiciens, enseignants etc) et/ou postcoloniaux en France durant ces « années 68 ».

  Esoteric currents and medicine (19th-early 20th century)

  The academic annual journal Arcana Naturae invites submissions for its 2022 edition devoted to the relations between esoteric currents and medicine (19^th-early 20^th century). One objective of the issue is to adopt a bio-bibliographical perspective with a view to developing a comparative and trans-geographical analysis of the condition and outlook of “physician-occultist”. How were “esoteric” beliefs reconciled with medical knowledge? What was the medical and societal reception of such attempts at rapprochement? And did esoteric interests always translate into medical practices? These are examples of issues to which this collective work seeks to provide a response from an academic and historical perspective.

  Critical theories and the challenge of interdisciplinarity

  Ces deux journées d’étude visent à mettre en lumière les travaux en cours de doctorant-e-s et jeunes docteur-e-s allemand-e-s et français-e-s travaillant sur la théorie critique d’un point de vue philosophique mais dans une perspective interdisciplinaire. L’interdisciplinarité est, désormais, sur toutes les lèvres. Mais elle est la plupart du temps évoquée dans un cadre particulier qui ne dit pas son nom : celui du processus de Bologne et de la restructuration néolibérale des universités européennes. Contre ce type d’interdisciplinarité qui se pense en tant qu’accumulation de différents savoirs sans se soucier de la manière de les articuler, nous nous posons la question suivante : comment penser aujourd’hui, grâce à la théorie critique, une interdisciplinarité et pluridisciplinarité qui ne soit pas un flatus vocis formaliste, mais dont l’approche inter- et pluridisciplinaire permet l’esquisse d’une théorie sociale contemporaine véritablement critique ?

  Engaged Visuality: The Italian and Belgian Poesia Visiva Phenomenon in the 60s and 70s

  In a historical and cultural moment, in which poetry could present itself as “phono-, ideo-, typo-, icono, photographical; mono-, stereo-, quadro-, ambiophonic; phonographic, bioscopic, kinetic; kinesic, eatable, odorous, tangible” (H. Damen, 1972), the international and countercultural experiences of Italian and Belgian visual poets drew a cutting-edge roadmap within the wider and multifaceted context of neo-avant-garde experimental poetry of the 1960s and 1970s by creating a unique model of interdisciplinary cooperation where verbivocovisual research, media discourses, and social criticism strongly converged. Combining insights from the fields of art history, literary criticism, and media studies, Engaged Visuality investigates the impact of new media, political imagery, and technologies on poesia visiva phenomenon by focusing on a bilateral case study rarely analyzed from a comparative and transcultural perspective: the foundation of the international poetry magazine Lotta Poetica (first series: 1971-75) by Sarenco and Paul De Vree, i.e., the aim of Italian and Belgian interartistic exchanges, co-authored initiatives, and cross-disciplinary inquiries.

  Confronting the Crisis of Expertise: Historical Roots and Current Challenges

  In the post-Covid-19 world, the problems already experienced by democracies with regards to social divisions and diminishing trust in public institutions are exacerbated by a growing epistemic crisis concerning the simultaneous need and contestation of expertise for public policy purposes. The existence of uncertain statistical data, the search for past models in dealing with hidden enemies, the public attempts to translate scientific knowledge and to make sense of decision-making processes, all point to a persistent need for advanced skills for working with governance data and discourses.       Our course enhances participants’ skills in analyzing the incorporation of techno and scientific knowledge into public governance and discourses. The summer school seeks to provide the tools and categories to critically assess systemic responses in times of both contested expertise and scientificization of politics.

Le présent colloque se propose d’interroger la manière dont ces derniers, qu’ils soient photographes, plasticiens, peintres, sculpteurs, graveurs, écrivains ou musiciens, s’approprient – à l’ère du « Poubellocène » – les rebuts, détritus et objets délaissés de notre société de surconsommation dans leurs œuvres, pour leur conférer une nouvelle visibilité.

  Legs et Littérature journal no.18

  Il a été constaté ces dernières années, tant en Haïti que sur la scène internationale, un regain d’intérêt pour la personne ainsi que l’œuvre de Jacques Stephen Alexis, figure emblématique de la littérature d’Haïti et de la Caraïbe. Tout à la fois, médecin, journaliste, romancier, essayiste et homme politique, ce natif des Gonaïves qui a débuté dans la littérature par un essai très remarqué sur le poète haïtien Hamilton Garoute a laissé une œuvre inachevée composée d’articles, d’essais, de contes (Romancero aux étoiles) et de romans qui n’ont cessé d’être l’objet de traductions et d’études sous formes de mémoires, de thèses de doctorat, d’essais et d’articles. Cet appel à contributions invite critiques littéraires et universitaires à réfléchir sur l’œuvre de cet écrivain, l’importance de son apport théorique aux études littéraires et le sens de son engagement politique.

  The workshop aims to contribute to the discussion on knowledge practices in times of reflexive disbelief by addressing the role of scholars with regards to different truth regimes. Michel Foucault once remarked that the analysis of “truth” should go beyond the evaluation of isolated statements: truth regimes are power systems which produce and sustain certain truths in a circular way, through political and economic institutions. William Davies of “The Guardian” traced back the current popular skepticism vis-à-vis professional expertise to a paradigm shift in truth regimes: the immediacy of self-revelatory data has been replacing, through a multitude of revelations, leaks and informational wars dating as far back as the Cold War, the interpretative work by experts and journalists

  Animation and experimentation

  L’animation introduit de facto un décalage avec le réel et s’écarte du réalisme imposé par le naturel d’une perspective représentative qui était au cœur de l’invention des Frères Lumière. Les avancées techniques de l’outil cinématographique s’accompagnent ainsi d’une exploration toujours renouvelée des possibilités d’expérimentation qui s’ouvrent alors avec elles, et l’animation, à ses côtés, découvre parfois par elle-même d’autres façons de faire bouger les images. L’animation a certes parfois écarté cette dimension exploratoire de la pratique filmique au profit d’une standardisation de ses modes de figuration, ce qui a conduit le grand public à la considérer, comme la bande dessinée , comme une forme d’expression pour enfants. Néanmoins, l’animation, par les possibilités graphiques qu’elle met en œuvre, n’a jamais cessé, plus souterrainement, de se livrer à l’expérimentation.

  Warfare, Welfare, and Transformation of European Society in the 20th Century

  The workshop aims to study the transformative impact of 20^th century wars on European societies. The first research avenue emphasises a perspective “from below”, by focusing on the relations between society and State policy. A second strand aims to deconstruct the traditional view centred on the Nation-State, by analysing the phenomena of mobilisation, demobilisation and transformation according to infra-state (at micro and meso levels) as well as supra-state scales. The workshop shifts focus on social actors and “sectional interests” (e.g. unions, employers’ organisations, voluntary sector), and aims to discuss the impact of the war from a transnational and entangled point of view. As it calls into question the natural primacy of the scale of analysis of the nation-state, it questions the caesura between wartimes and post-war times to consider the processes of war exit (sortie de guerre) and those of social translation beyond the end of the fighting.

  Artistic Neighbourhoods between Tension and Cooperation

  The Artistic Space of Central and Eastern Europe in its Interactions with the USSR in the Interwar Period

  In the Interwar period the Soviet administration conceived a new type of cultural diplomacy with the aim of attaining political, diplomatic and propagandist ends. Historians have been mainly interested in cultural experiences and exchanges with Western Europe or/and with the United States, while neighbouring countries are often excluded from studies of these circulations. The workshop, which will take place on June 1, 2021 aims to revisit the artistic and cultural history of the interwar period from the perspective of relations between the USSR and Central and Eastern Europe, through the study of the international career of artists and works of art in the broad sense of the term (painting, sculpture and specifically graphic art productions). The goal of this workshop is to bring together young specialists (doctoral students and early-career researchers) in history of art, cultural and political history and visual studies around this complex, rich and little-studied topic.

  Building architecture and the city

  Schools in their territories? (20th-21st centuries)

  En début d’année prochaine, l’École nationale supérieure d’architecture de Strasbourg fêtera le centenaire de sa création. À cette occasion, une exposition intitulée « L’école d’architecture de Strasbourg (1921-2021) : une douce modernité en Alsace ? » se tiendra aux Archives de la Ville et de l’Eurométropole. Elle interrogera l’héritage (bâti et culturel) des protagonistes de cette école sur le territoire régional au cours du siècle écoulé par un éclairage inédit de ce patrimoine architectural riche, méconnu et peu valorisé. Cette exposition fera l'objet d’un catalogue augmenté de contributions relatives au contexte de la formation et de la production des architectes à Strasbourg depuis 1921, faisant émerger les spécificités du territoire alsacien.

  Workshop 1 - practices of languages in a transnational context

  L'atelier jeunes chercheurs Pratiques des langues en contexte transnational s'inscrit dans le cycle de trois ateliers jeunes chercheurs (2021-2023) consacré aux pratiques transnationales émancipatrices et organisés successivement à Berlin, Bonn et Paris. Cet atelier est consacré au statut des langues et aux pratiques linguistiques dans les mouvements et/ou groupes transnationaux se revendiquant d'une éthique égalitaire, en s'appuyant notamment sur l'expérience de l'esperanto. Les langues d'échange des communautés en migration ou en diaspora offrent aussi un terrain particulièrement riche pour l'analyse de ces circulations et usages linguistiques à l'échelle mondiale, qui échappent à une autorité linguistique centralisée.

  Cette journée vous propose différentes interventions qui interrogent les manières de penser l’autre, lorsqu’il n’est pas ou plus capable de s’exprimer, qu’il se voit privé de tout médiateur. Il sera question des morts convoqués par le·la chaman·e, des archives exhumés par l’historien·ne, des chiens introduits dans les établissements de soins, de la musique diffusée dans les chambres d’isolement... Autant de pratiques visant à établir un mode de communication particulier pour tenter d’entrer en dialogue, notamment dans des situations de soins, telles que le coma, l’agonie, la psychose, le placement forcé ou encore la prise en charge de traumatismes comme le viol.
