A Generation On New Theories, Methodologies, Spatial Inquiries, and Research Directions with SWANA Youth

While considering the ongoing changes in the SWANA region, the conference has the ambition to lay the foundation for new research projects on youths that explore how the challenges and intersections within existing approaches can contribute to advancing research. We are looking to bring together researchers to consider the legacy of earlier youth mobilizations on today’s youth, whilst discussing new and emerging research which enables theoretical, methodological, and spatial ways of understanding the lived experiences and futures of young people in the region. We will examine the extent to which this category can be mobilized as an analytical tool in its own right, and we question its conceptual relevance, as well as its limits and its potential blind spots.

    Babies as world makers

    Revue « Terrain » n° 87

This special issue of Terrain aims to put newborns at the heart of anthropological analysis of collectives. Every birth is preceded by alliances, precipitates ruptures or reconfigurations, and opens up possibilities. It represents both an unpredictable encounter and a beginning, a fragile possibility for the perpetuation and preservation of the highest values. The aim of this issue is to take seriously the disruptive force of babies, from their undecided ontological position. While babies may not obviously make “heads turn and worlds go round” everywhere, as Nita imagines, their sudden appearance certainly creates disorder and reorganization that must be examined. This issue will attempt to do so.

1995: a “Black Box” for Reflections on Contemporary Japan

Revue « Ebisu. Études japonaises », numéro 64

The year 1995 is often regarded as a turning point in the history of contemporary Japan. The country suffered two traumatic shocks in rapid succession: the Kobe earthquake in January and the Tokyo subway sarin attacks carried out by the Aum Shinrikyō cult in March. It was also struck by an economic crisis following the collapse of the speculative bubble in the early 1990. Thirty years later, this issue brings together transdisciplinary perspectives—from case and comparative studies to longue durée analysis—to present a renewed understanding of 1995, reassess its importance and singularity, and confirm or challenge previous work.

Translation Networks in the Decolonising World, 1950s–1970s

It aims to explore how translation practices facilitated the circulation of anti-colonial ideas, shaped notions of identity and sovereignty, and influenced the formation of new political and cultural realities in the decolonising world.
