KISMIF conference 2018

We are pleased to announce the fourth “Keep It Simple, Make It Fast!” (KISMIF) Conference which will take place in Porto, Portugal, between 3 July and 7 July 2018. This initiative follows the great success of the three past editions and brings together an international community of researchers focusing on underground music scenes and do-it-yourself culture. The 4^th edition of KISMIF will focus on “Gender, differences, identities and DIY cultures”, directing its attention on gender issues relating to underground scenes and do it yourself (DIY) cultures, and their manifestation at local, translocal and virtual levels.

The work of Adolphe Alphand (1817-1891) in the context of the Grand Paris project today

Creation and transmission of an urban landscape

À l’heure du développement du Grand Paris mais également de la transformation de la capitale intra-muros et à la lumière des Plans climat et biodiversité, ce colloque revient sur l’œuvre fondatrice d’Adolphe Alphand (1817-1891). Figure majeure, mais encore peu connue de l’urbanisme parisien, Adolphe Alphand a dirigé la création du paysage parisien pendant presque quarante ans, initialement en collaboration avec le préfet Haussmann et ensuite en tant que Directeur général des Travaux de la ville de Paris. Organisé à l’occasion du 200^e anniversaire de sa naissance, ce colloque se propose de réunir des historiens, des écologues, des paysagistes-concepteurs, des architectes et des urbanistes afin d'aborder son œuvre, sa réception et son héritage en regard du développement du Grand Paris et des villes du XXI^e siècle.

The role of international conferences in the emergency of the main themes of urban management in the 20th century (part 2)

Cette rencontre constitue le second volet d'une première journée d'études tenue en janvier 2017 qui avait été l'occasion de travailler sur l'historicisation du rôle des colloques internationaux dans l'émergence des grandes thématiques de l'aménagement urbain au xxe siècle. Il s'agissait de tenter une réévaluation de ces rencontres, souvent perçues comme des événements institutionnels « verrouillés » présentant un intérêt limité. Sans nier le caractère codifié de ces rencontres, on souligne trop peu leur remarquable succès qui se renforce au cours du XX^e siècle et on manque l'originalité de leur démarche : saisir les mutations de l'urbain à un échelon international. L'organisation de cette seconde journée doit permettre d'explorer des pistes qui ont émergé lors de la session de janvier.

The idea of decentralization and regional planning, in the 20th century

Throughout the 20^th century, from URSS to the United-States, Germany, Italy and Japan, architects, planners, economists, and politicians have repeatedly proposed decentralization as a way to restructure societies and their spaces—notably in response to political, economic, environmental, social, or cultural crisis. Our purpose is to revisit the concept and projects elaborated during the 20^th Century (mainly until the 1970s) We will attempt, with the different papers, to understand the ideals that founded them, the references mobilized, the tools – conceptual as well as practical – they experimented, the influences they could have – or not – on the making of the urbanized world and on a new image of it; we will also explore the transfers from a scientific field to another, from a cultural space to another.

Cahiers de la recherche architecturale, urbaine et paysagère

À l’échelle des grands bouleversements tels que ceux connus par le monde au XX^e siècle, la migration de l’architecte, de l’urbaniste, du ou de la paysagiste peut apparaître comme un épiphénomène. Pourtant, le nombre et la diversité de ces trajectoires révèlent sans aucun doute de riches enseignements à propos de la circulation des idées, des techniques et des savoir-faire à l’ère contemporaine. Qu’ils relèvent de la migration économique, de l’exil politique, de l’exode ou de l’évasion, ces « voyages subis » témoignent d’une histoire culturelle de ces différentes figures professionnelles qui nécessite d’être prise en considération.

Modernism and Rurality: Mapping the State of Research (EAHN 2018 - Tallin)

5th European Architectural History Network International Meeting, in Tallinn, June 2018

This session aims to address, from a historical perspective, the relation between, on one side, architecture and the related disciplines, and on the other side, agriculture and rurality at large. We welcome proposals specifically mapping case studies concerned with large-scale agricultural development and/or colonization schemes conceived and (but not necessarily) implemented in Europe and beyond during modern times (late 18th-20th century), strongly connected to nation- and State-building processes, and to the modernization of the countryside. We are particularly interested in those examples which aimed to “make the difference” in both scale and numbers, entailing radical reshaping of previously uninhabited or sparsely populated areas into new, planned, “total” rural landscapes.

Comparative Perspectives on Urban Diversity from the Gulf and Beyond

This conference aims to revisit the notion of cosmopolitanism in Gulf cities and other regional areas from a comparative perspective. It will be a unique opportunity for scholars of the Gulf and other world regions to engage with cosmopolitanism or otherwise probe the intersection of global studies, urban studies and migration studies from a range of disciplines. More specifically, panels will be organized around the following research themes:“cosmopolitan canopy”, cosmopolitanism in theoretical and comparative perspectives, new geographies of cosmopolitanism in Gulf cities.

Continuity or rupture?

Depuis le début des années 2010, les rencontres scientifiques traitant la question des abords des villes médiévales en Occident, leur extra muros, à savoir les faubourgs, la banlieue et le plat-pays, se multiplient. Cette historiographie récente, aux acquis indéniables, demande cependant à être encore approfondie. Par exemple, la comparaison des modes de fonctionnement intra et extra muros permettrait de mieux les définir. On pourrait ainsi comprendre plus précisément les espaces périphériques et mieux appréhender la ville médiévale dans son ensemble. La recherche récente a montré que les espaces situés au dedans et au dehors de l’enceinte urbaine sont des zones policées sous le pouvoir d’une autorité politique commune, laïque ou religieuse. S’appuyant sur cet acquis, la journée d’études aura pour objectif d’approfondir la connaissance de l’administration de toute la société urbaine.

5th Living Transition workshop

Jardins partagés, jardins collectifs ou jardins communautaires, toutes ces dénominations mettent en avant l'usage et la gestion en commun de pratiques auxquelles les jardins offrent un horizon de possibles. Ces possibles partagent l'idée de commun aussi, c'est à cette notion que sera décernée cette journée. L'idée de communs est née d'une critique de l'intérêt général, dont elle se distingue sans renier l'intérêt d'une montée en généralité. Il s'agit de jouer d'équilibres instables, non comme d'une fragilité, mais comme l'affirmation d'une ouverture : ouverture à l'altérité (humaine et non humaine), ouverture sur le monde et le devenir.
