Innovation and medieval communities in North-West Europe (1200-1500)

Le lien bien établi entre innovation et modernisation suscite de nombreuses interrogations aujourd'hui. Toutefois ce phénomène est loin d’être propre aux sociétés modernes et contemporaines et la fin du Moyen Âge, qui n’a encore jamais fait l’objet d’une étude systématique sur ce sujet, se révèle essentielle pour comprendre les mécanismes humains d’adaptation, mais aussi les enjeux culturels qui facilitent ou bloquent les transitions. Débarrassés de toute perspective téléologique sur l’innovation, la période (XIII^e- début XVI^e siècle) et l’espace (Europe du Nord-Ouest) que nous souhaitons placer au cœur de cette rencontre pourront servir de laboratoire d’analyse, afin d’estimer les conditions de réception de l’innovation et les réactions suscitées par l’irruption de la nouveauté.

Reconfiguring / resignifying the city: urban ecotones in the South

Un « écotone » désigne initialement une zone de transition entre deux écosystèmes, par exemple entre terre et mer. Le programme « Écotones » (2015-2020) est un cycle de colloques visant à reprendre ce terme traditionnellement utilisé en géographie et en écologie et à élargir le concept en l’appliquant à d'autres disciplines des sciences sociales et des sciences humaines. Un « écotone » peut donc aussi être compris comme un espace culturel de rencontres, de conflits et de renouveau entre plusieurs communautés. Ce colloque interdisciplinaire portera plus spécifiquement sur les villes coloniales et postcoloniales du Sud en tant que dialectique « écotonale » entre lieux et non-lieux (Augé).

The Enlightened Nightscape (1700-1830)

The objective of The Enlightened Nightscape 1700-1830 is to present a cross-disciplinary discussion on the thinking about the concept of night through examples from the global and long eighteenth century. This edited collection seeks to bring together case studies that address how the night became visible in the eighteenth century through different mediums and in different geographical contexts. The proposed study of the representation, treatment, and meaning of the night in the long and global eighteenth century also contributes to an on-going exercise that questions the accepted definitions of the Enlightenment. By bringing Eighteenth-Century Studies into dialogue with Night Studies, The Enlightened Nightscape 1700-1830 enriches the critical conversation on both lines of research

Working, living and thinking Bata. Territory and daily life in Bataville

L'entreprise de chaussures Bata crée dès 1931 la ville-usine de Bataville, territoire qu’elle quittera en 2001. L’histoire de Bataville permet notamment de retracer l'implantation d'un système lié à une entreprise sur un territoire rural et faiblement industrialisé. Ce monde fabriqué est un monde de travail, qui se concrétise par un site industriel important, mais également un monde social, bien spécifique, pensé et mis en œuvre de toutes pièces par l’entreprise, créant une ville-usine planifiée au paysage très spécifique. Le colloque vise à rendre compte des travaux du groupe de recherche BataLab. Il s’agit d’historiciser et de caractériser l’évolution du territoire, du système social et du système de travail à Bataville et dans les localités environnantes, des années 1930 à nos jours.

Renewals for Architecture and Social Housing?

8th thematics folder of the “Cahiers de la recherche architecturale, urbaine et paysagère” (Craup)

This call for papers concerns social housing, a rapidly changing and significant field for those who practice architecture, landscape architecture and spatial planning. Present throughout Europe at various levels, from 4% in Romania to 32% in the Netherlands, social housing heavily contributes to urban renewal. Through its material and non-material renovation, as well as the evolution of meanings, stakeholders and populations, new dynamics emerge that influence architectural, urban and landscape forms, modes of living and careers in spatial production. This volume seeks to identify and decode these dynamics through three axes: 1) Towards new models; 2) Between heritage, urban renewal and sustainable development; 3) Spatial forms and social arrangements.

The visual forms of the collective

De la peinture d’histoire du XIX^e siècle aux grandes productions cinématographiques contemporaines, les œuvres visuelles ont tendance à traiter des actions, des émotions ou des événements collectifs en les incarnant dans une figure individuelle qui les emblématise. Cette stratégie a prouvé sa très grande efficacité, du point de vue visuel et du point de vue narratif ; cependant, elle a pour conséquence la rareté des formes visuelles du collectif comme tel. Plus difficile à représenter et peut-être aussi plus difficile à lire, le « collectif » est cependant un thème constant des représentations et des narrations visuelles contemporaines : peuples, masses, foules, multitudes, groupes, classes traversent l’histoire du monde contemporain en ne cessant d’y reposer le problème de l’existence d’un sujet collectif, rendant ainsi aigu et passionnant celui de sa figuration.

Des chercheurs du monde entier, et notamment originaires de la région latino-américaine, viennent présenter leurs travaux, réalisés depuis une perspective comparative et située, et sélectionnés dans le souci d'une approche pluridisciplinaire. Les thèmes qui ont animé leurs recherches s'articulent autour de la complexité et des conflits de(s) politique(s) de l'habitat, des manières de repenser l'informalité et la précarité urbaine, et de la politisation des rapports des habitants à la nature en contexte urbain. Nous aurons aussi la chance de recevoir des experts sur les questions urbaines et plus largement socio-spatiales, qui animeront les discussions à l'issue de chaque session de présentations.

7th biennial conference of the European Network for Avant-Garde and Modernism Studies (EAM 2020)

Notions of crisis have long charged the study of the European avant-garde and modernism. Throughout their history, avant-gardists and modernists have faced crises, be they economic or political, scientific or technological, aesthetic or philosophical, collective or individual, local or global, short or perennial. Modernists and avant-gardists have in turn continually stood accused of instigating crises, whether artistic or cultural, sensorial or conceptual, incidental or intentional, far-reaching or negligible, representational or other. The very concepts of ‘avant-garde’ and ‘modernism’ are time and again subject—or subjected—to conceptual crises, leaving modernism and avant-garde studies as a field on the perpetual brink of a self-effacing theoretical crisis. The 7th biennial conference of the EAM intends to tackle the ways in which the avant-garde and modernism in Europe relate to crisi/es.

Urban fears, 16-21th century

The notion of “urban fears” is not new but can be reexamined, in a newly initiated approach of an “emotional” approach to the city, a study of the emotions of inhabitants. “Urban fears” will be defined as collective feelings of anxiety, in urban populations, about events occurring or likely to occur in the city where they live, and for a sufficient period of time not to be considered anecdotal. “Dangerous classes” of the lowlands, riots, natural, climatic, environmental, epidemic, food disasters, irrational fears, rumours and urban legends will be the focus of our attention.

The objective of this Seminar is to stress the importance of a collaborative and participative way to understand through our senses. We want to explore connections between thinking and action in everyday city experiences, developing “in situ” actions. We consider that the knowledge of the space need space experiences. We aim to develop a collective, community exploration of the vital flow of the Lavapiés area in Madrid altering the classical relationship between artist, landscape and inhabitants. This exploration will allow the construction of an intangible map of audiovisual fragments, photo, phonographs, video art, performative actions. The direct experimentation of space helps us understand it, as well as "to perform it"; it helps us understand the aesthetic and emotional relationships we have with it. In order to get our objectives, urban artists, soundscape experts, theater groups, architects, philosopher, civil and social associations, citizens…will be invited.

Prison spaces in the Middle Ages: an interdisciplinary approach to the territories and materialities of medieval incarceration

While recent work has renewed our knowledge of medieval execution sites and of the internal layout of detention facilities, much remains to be done to understand the distribution of prison spaces and territories, in particular to shed light on the socio-spatial dynamics and logic of their establishment. These prison spaces evolved between the beginning and the extreme end of the Middle Ages, with prisons only multiplying from the 13th century onwards. These evolutions must be understood in close coordination with the evolutions of medieval justice and its spatial practices. Studies can be carried out at the scale of a building, a neighborhood, a city, a city, one or more regions.

Economy, informal economy, employment and growth in Subsaharan Africa

The perspectives of the social sciences and economics

Depuis plusieurs décennies, la situation socio-économique de beaucoup de pays d’Afrique subsaharienne laisse à désirer. L’économie formelle (secteur formel) telle qu’elle existe dans les pays développés n’y est pas performante dans une large mesure ; et c’est l’économie informelle (secteur informel) qui ne cesse de prendre une ampleur considérable aussi bien en milieu rural qu’en milieu urbain. Il s’agit d’un terrain de prédilection qui permet de répondre à un besoin de survie et de lutte contre la pauvreté. On y retrouve « une population de plus en plus hétérogène : des migrants de toute origine, des jeunes diplômés en quête d’un premier emploi, des laissés-pour-compte du système scolaire, des chômeurs du secteur moderne victimes des politiques de stabilisation » (Maldonado et al., 2001). Les dirigeants politiques, les fonctionnaires de l’État et le personnel du secteur privé évoluent également dans ce même secteur formel qui se révèle, dans certains cas, comme un moyen d’accumulation du capital, parfois au détriment de l’État ou de l’intérêt général.

Par conséquent, ce numéro de la revue Idées et Territoires proposera, via vos contributions, de participer à comprendre comment s’illustrent les changements induits et produits par cette politique urbaine de grande envergure sur les quartiers, l’habitat, les lieux et les habitants. Les articles portant sur des terrains d’étude en Bretagne-Pays de la Loire sont particulièrement souhaités mais non exclusivement.
