Valentine de Saint-Point and the avant-garde
Art, dance, performance and politics - between Europe and Asia
Ce premier colloque international consacré à Valentine de Saint-Point vise à explorer l'ensemble des chemins empruntés par cette femme complexe, au parcours biographique enchevêtré, à l'œuvre foisonnante. Car si Valentine de Saint-Point a gagné, désormais, une certaine reconnaissance critique, les réalisations de cette expérimentatrice hors du commun restent encore peu étudiées dans le détail, et paraissent presque éclipsées par son personnage : la poétesse semble avoir été victime de son existence trop encombrante, de sa trajectoire trop romanesque, de ses turpitudes trop omniprésentes. Comme si le pittoresque de sa vie amenait à oublier ses créations ou ses textes, ou à ne les considérer que de loin, comme des documents secondaires d'une aventure personnelle construite hors des sentiers battus.

Second conference of the Groupement d’intérêt scientifique Moyen-Orient et mondes musulmans
Les objectifs du Congrès est d'encourager les jeunes chercheurs, doctorants et post-doctorants, faire connaître les associations travaillant sur le champ, réunir des chercheurs d’horizons divers pour pallier le cloisonnement inévitable des équipes de recherche, permettre à des thèmes de recherche d’être abordés en commun par des spécialistes de différentes sciences humaines et sociales, répondre aux défis posés par les bouleversements en cours au Maghreb et au Moyen-Orient, développer l’histoire de l’islam, rendre compte des mobilisations de la société civile. Des ateliers d’une journée ou d’une demi-journée présenteront des recherches en cours en favorisant les débats entre chercheurs. Il s’agit de mobiliser la communauté scientifique française et francophone par des échanges entre spécialistes de différentes périodes, de différentes disciplines et de différentes aires géographiques ou pays (Turquie, Iran, monde arabe, Indonésie,…).

This conference is an international symposium that proposes to study the entire range of exchanges and relations established between these two areas during the Early Modern Times (1500-1820). Its main objective is to think about diplomatic, economic, religious and cultural links between Europe and the Middle East by calling upon over twenty researchers with specializations in the Arab, Persian and Muslim world. In addition, this conference will provide a comprehensive overview to date of the Arabian Gulf at a time of major political change, including the successive arrival of the European “trading empires”. It will focus on some of the methodological challenges raised by a global, connected and cross-cultural thinking approach to the History of the Middle East and Europe”.

Ce colloque international se penchera sur l’assimilation en Europe de connaissances relatives aux cultures chrétiennes-orientales, à partir surtout du dernier tiers du XIXe siècle, et sur le rôle que les missions ont joué dans ce processus. Ces connaissances nouvelles sont fondées en grande partie sur les travaux menés sur le terrain, au Moyen-Orient, en particulier sur les manuscrits conservés dans les monastères et les patriarcats, et plus généralement sur le patrimoine littéraire, linguistique, archéologique, cartographique et musicologique, des communautés chrétiennes installées.

Theme issue of the journal Études arméniennes contemporaines (EAC n° 8 – Decembre 2017)
The history of the large-scale massacres committed against the Armenians under the reign of Sultan Abdülhamid II, in 1894-1896, is still largely unknown, its sources underutilized or not studied at all. This period of extreme violence, a watershed in the political and social history of the Ottoman Empire, raises many questions about the similarities and differences with the genocidal process of 1915-1916. We invite submissions on a broad range of topics and disciplinary approaches for this special issue. Relevant studies may include chronological analyses of the events of the 1890s themselves, as well as analyses of the consequences of that era of violence up to the present day. At the heart of this issue lies the question of the precedent: what links can be established between the genocide and the mass crimes that preceded it – an issue relevant to the study of other twentieth-century genocides.

Transformed urban spaces and gender issues in Arab and Mediterranean societies
Tout en privilégiant la prise en compte des rapports de genre et les approches comparatives, le colloque insistera sur les processus de transformation des espaces et de leurs fonctions. L’espace est ici entendu dans un double sens : celui qui l’indexe aux lieux et aux paysages, celui qui renvoie à une délimitation abstraite pour dire, par exemple, l’espace politique ou l’espace littéraire. Les contributions de chercheurs, mais aussi d’autres types d’acteurs (associations, artistes …), ayant pour terrain les sociétés arabes et méditerranéennes seront privilégiées sans exclure d’autres régions du monde.

Irrationality in the Middle East and Islām
Atelier thématique – IIe congrès du GIS « Moyen-Orient et Mondes musulmans »
If rationality denotes what complies with the mind, irrationality, by contrast, deals with all that, at first sight, can't be explained and controlled by the ʿaql. In other words, irrationality is a negatively defined notion marked by lack or loss (ʿadam-, ġayr-ou lā-ʿaql), distance (ibʿād)or deviation (inḥirāf) from the intellect, or even it is the result of reduced rationality (qillat al-ʿaql). An irrational behaviour is considered rather strange, abnormal, and sometimes contrary to sound norms and moral principals. Consequently, this is the case of liminal states or of more or less voluntary marginal conducts: the insane and the mental ill, the drunk or the intoxicated, the silly, the foolish, the madly in love with beloved or with God, etc.

Arabian Humanities No. 9's thematic issue deals with the transformation of national identifications in a region characterized by many transnational mobilities and circulations, and at a time — from the Gulf war till today — when these dynamics have intensified and are now blurring or exacerbating feelings of belonging.

Ce colloque organisé en mai 2017 par l'université de Nantes (laboratoire L'AMo) et l'université Paris 3 (UMR Thalim) est le premier événement international consacré à cette femme d'avant-garde hors du commun, qui a révolutionné l'art et rédigé des textes poétiques, critiques, politiques, romanesques ou théâtraux, pendant près d’un demi-siècle, de 1904 à 1951.

On sait que la péninsule Arabique et l'Europe entretiennent depuis longtemps des relations durables, tant économiques que culturelles. Dans la poursuite des activités de la Chaire de dialogue des cultures sur l'histoire de ces relations depuis l'Antiquité et le Moyen Âge, ce colloque international s'intéressera plus spécifiquement aux liens entre l'Europe et la péninsule Arabique à l'époque contemporaine, depuis les débuts de la mondialisation de l'âge industriel jusqu'aux derniers développements économiques et stratégiques contemporains. Leur comparaison ainsi que l'étude du contenu et de l'évolution des échanges sont un moyen de mieux comprendre ce qui relie l'Europe et la péninsule Arabique.

Visual arts in Islam lands: new approaches, new issues
Ce dossier thématique a pour objectif de dresser une cartographie de la recherche portant sur les arts plastiques modernes et contemporains dans les pays où l’islam est la principale référence religieuse. À la différence du cinéma, du théâtre ou de la littérature, les arts visuels contemporains ont peu bénéficié de l’attention des chercheurs, et ce malgré un renouveau d’intérêt alimenté par l’actualité socio-politique des « révolutions arabes ». Nous proposons d’étudier les différents ensembles disciplinaires à partir desquels se développent les recherches sur l’art contemporain en examinant les méthodes et les outils d’analyse qui ont été utilisés depuis l’émergence de l’art moderne au Maghreb et au Moyen-Orient.

Modernizers: Changing science and society in the Middle East and North Africa (1870s-1930s)
Re-constructing a local genealogy of the scientific modernization in North Africa and the Middle East is still a pending task. Research on modern Arab-Islamic scientists, physicians and engineers will help expand the collective memory of modernization in those countries by adding new, often badly-known or forgotten actors to its ranks. Biographies will also help illuminate the intrinsic connection existing between science and society, showing how science has always been a necessary element in plans for national independence, social change and democratic rule. This conference will focus on the biographies of some late 19th-early 20th century scientists from Morocco, Egypt, Turkey, Iraq, Iran and Syria
