  Response Events

  This conference is part of a transdisciplinary research project about response events led jointly at the University of Tartu, Aix-Marseille University and University of Côte d’Azur. It aims to study responses to representations (literary, artistic, media, historical, etc.) and how these representations can produce an event for given readers/spectators. Leaving aside the events that certain representations can provoke and that are similar to historical facts (as for literary scandals caused by the publication of condemned works), it focuses on representations from the point of view of their response, where the singular experiences of reading/spectating (that are eventually shared) are identified as events. In the current context of representations’ and their media’s–notably screens–proliferation, it appears relevant to re-interrogate the response experience through the events that it can trigger.

  "This thing of darkness": the night in anglophone arts and literature

  Night is often seen as the other side of the day, meaning darkness, and potential disorders. But these presumably negative connotations also bear witness to the metaphoric richness of the night, explored relentlessly in literature, the visual arts, and on film. The night is the locus of an ambiguity and indeterminacy, which should not be viewed merely as factors of disorder, but as possibilities for different lives and identities, which seem to radically elude the norms governing diurnal practices. Nonetheless, is it merely a form of transgression or does it inaugurate a mode of existence of its own? Furthermore, to what extent do technical, social, and cultural changes influence those perceptions by blurring the line between day and night? With the inexorable generalisation of lighting and the ubiquity of screens, is the night a thing of the past?

  The city from an interdisciplinary perspective

  L'étude de la « fabrique » de la ville s'intéresse peu aux espaces interstitiels, périphériques, délaissés, disqualifiés, en attente d'assignation ; aux lieux qui brouillent et questionnent les limites instituées, interrogent la distinction public/privé, le rapport centre/périphérie. Ces lieux méritent pourtant notre attention. Qu'ils soient vides ou occupés, bâtis ou non, ces lieux peuvent (re)devenir communs... puis cesser de l'être. Espaces à prendre, ils sont aussi à saisir intellectuellement. Car ils participent depuis toujours à la transformation des villes et invitent à porter sur elles un regard attentif aux dynamiques informelles, aux régulations qui procèdent de l'usage et à des processus d'institutionalisation qui échappent à l'État.

  The goal of this international conference is to explore Kantor’s artistic work, his painting and writing, as a contribution he makes for the future of humanity. Kantor has been known as a Russian dissident and a fierce critic of the political development in the former Soviet Union, and his view of the current social, political, and spiritual situation of Europe is no less sharp. The scientific committee considers a strong analysis or a close reading of Kantor’s works as a major criterium in selecting the papers. As many writings are available only in Russian, the scientific committee strongly encourages scholars who are fluent in Russian to submit proposals that could make these texts available to a larger public.

Montpellier Contemporain, avec le soutien de l’Institut national d’histoire de l’art, organisent le 20 novembre 2020 une journée d’étude sur la visibilité des collections privées dans les institutions culturelles publiques. Dans un contexte de raréfaction des fonds publics dédié à l’acquisition d’oeuvres, la visibilité de -tout ou parties- de collections déjà constituées représente un enjeu majeur de la scène artistique contemporaine. Pour autant, de multiples controverses mettent en garde contre la starification des collections privées, leur impact sur le marché de l’art, et sur les dangers d’une emprise des collectionneurs sur les institutions culturelles publiques.

  56th spring study day of the French Society for the Psychopathology of Expression and Art Therapy

  Comment le geste artistique, nos pratiques cliniques, les dynamiques sociétales, peuvent-ils être sujet et objet d'errances ? Présente dans la clinique l'errance a partie liée avec l'échec thérapeutique et la fugue.  Dans nos rues, dans les couloirs de nos institutions, le long des lignes d'erre des autistes matérialisées par Deligny, nous les voyons déambuler sans horizon. Sont-ils en fuite ? Cherchent-ils une rencontre qui donnerait une signification à leur route ? La désinsertion, la précarisation, l'aliénation sociale peuvent prendre chez des patients, des sujets sans domicile fixe ou des migrants, les formes les plus extrêmes de l'errance et du désarrimage.

  À cette errance physique s'associe une errance mentale parfois revendiquée, mais souvent aussi source de pathologie, inséparable de l'angoisse d'une quête identitaire, de la recherche d'un lieu enfin stabilisé. Contrairement au voyage l'errance est sans repères apparents. Elle ne s'oppose pas à l'absence de but mais ne connaît pas le chemin tracé pour y parvenir. Elle n'est pas non plus l'erreur, mais inscription hésitante dans le temps et dans l'espace que nombre d'écrivains ont célébrée (Rousseau dans ses Rêveries du promeneur solitaire, George Sand dans sa Lettre à un voyageur) et de musiciens (Schubert et ses Wanderlieder ou sa Winterreise, Malher dans son Chant de la Terre). Plus proche de nous, des artistes contemporains comme Raymond Depardon ont pu saisir l'errance dans leurs photographies ou des cinéastes la montrer dans le road movie dans le western... La pratique artistique, quant à elle, engage l'errance dans son geste, ou encore dans sa perception même.

  Le saisissement esthétique que produit l'œuvre d'art — la figure de Charlot chez Charlie Chaplin, le geste incertain d'un Cy Twombly, l'ironie d'un Jean-Luc Godard estimant s'être trompé de planète — nous met aux prises avec l'incertitude et le vacillement propres à l'errance. 

  Comment l'œuvre s'en saisit-elle ? Quelles représentations en surgissent tant dans le travail artistique qu'art-thérapeutique ?

  Common ground: ethnomusicology and "popular music studies"

  L’étude des faits musicaux a toujours été pris sous des focales disciplinaires plurielles : musicologie, histoire, sociologie, anthropologie, mais aussi études littéraires, géographie, et bien d’autres sciences humaines. La nécessité d’un dialogue entre ces différentes approches demeure importante. La Société française d’ethnomusicologie et la branche francophone d’Europe de l’International Association for the Study of Popular Music (IASPM-Bfe) souhaitent contribuer à cet effort de dialogue en organisant pour la première fois un colloque commun qui interroge les frontières disciplinaires mouvantes qui touchent à l’étude des formes musicales contemporaines. La question de « terrains communs » pour les deux champs d’études permettra d’envisager les dynamiques croisées qui traversent les musiques populaires contemporaines, entendues dans une acception large, entre industrialisation de la musique et relocalisation des pratiques, entre nouvelles technologies de médiatisation, méthode ethnographique, analyse musicale et cultural studies.

  Images and Borderlands: Mediterranean basin between Christendom and Ottoman Empire in the Early Modern Age

  Following in the footsteps of Fernand Braudel, an increasing number of recent studies show that the Mediterranean basin might be considered as a “borderland”, “borderscape”  or “Frontier” suggesting that this area is not strictly a border between Christian and Muslim civilization, but a basin in which the two traditions and cultures meet and overlap, with an extraordinary variety of reactions to the hegemonic practices (acceptance, conflict, refusal, dissent). The aim of this conference is to bring together scholars who will discuss, from different perspectives and with a multidisciplinary approach, the variety of themes (topics) which revolve around the common issue of reflecting the problem of borderlands as a consequence of the encounter between Christendom and Ottoman Empire in the Early modern Mediterranean. The starting point of examination will be images, i.e. the usage of images (pictures, mental images, literary images and other visual representations …) as historical evidence.
