  Describing, inhabiting and governing Urban Fringe Landscapes

  Narbonne, France, 5th to 7th november, 2014

  The goal of this conference is to question European urban fringes, which we define as precise or graduated transitional spaces where the city leaves space for something else : countryside, forests, “nature,” wasteland or fallow awaiting projects... These urban fringes can be understood at different scales, from the overall agglomeration down to the quarter or even at the installation project scale. This conference is designed as a moment of exchange making it possible to compare research and management experiences around this original object concentrating numerous issues. Different axes of analysis are proposed : Landscapes and urban fringe physiognomies ; agricultures and cities ; nature and biodiversity ; Urban margins : marginalising and social mixing ; Urban limits under constraint: risks and protected spaces.

  2014 CELAT summer school

  Le CELAT et les Musées de la civilisation organisent leur 3^ème édition de l'université d'été sous le thème « Ville et musée : nouveaux enjeux patrimoniaux », du 11 au 17 mai 2014 inclusivement. Durant sept jours consécutifs, des professionnel.le.s de la muséologie et des études urbaines interviendront sur le thème « Ville et Musée » dans le cadre d'une rencontre inédite entre une vision muséologique de la ville et une vision urbanistique du musée. À travers l'analyse de plusieurs études de cas nationales et internationales, des spécialistes de la culture, de la géographie, des études urbaines, de la muséologie, de l'art public et du tourisme accompagneront les étudiant.e.s tout au long de la semaine dans le but d'identifier les nouvelles pratiques muséales, partimoniales et artistiques au sein de l'espace urbain, et ce, à travers un travail d'immersion dans des institutions culturelles et muséales de la ville de Québec.

  Luxury in all its States: Foundations, Dynamic and Plurality

  This issue of “Revues Etudes Caribéennes” aims to reflect upon the concept of luxury, to invest the luxury in all its states. It comes to question the foundations of luxury, from the theory to the materiality, from the manufacture to the consumption, between provocative distinction and aesthetization in all walk of life. Within the context of this thematic issue, luxury is envisaged a multidisciplinary approach, ranging from philosophy to sociology, from the economy to the development of the territory... Imputs may approach luxury a specific angle (economics of luxury, the luxury throughout history). They can treat a particular dimension of luxury, through an emblematic product or construction of luxury territories. Special attention will be paid to the luxury industry with its brands and its logic of creation and production. Finally, luxury exist through the construction of its legends which are formed from many distinctive indicators that stimulate both the casual and the exclusive consumers.

  The objective of this thematic issue is to call for various and renewed approaches which develop analysis in terms of the economy, regional planning, sociology, geography etc. Articles may propose a theoretical reflection or focus on case studies, dealing with the relations of mass tourism, alternative tourism, or to illustrate one of these two aspects.   Thinking the creation of the city in the time of crises

  7th French-Italian encounters of the social geography

  Le colloque franco-italien intitulé « Penser la fabrique de la ville en temps de crises » initié par l’UMR CITERES, s’inscrit dans la continuité d’une série de manifestations scientifiques annuelles, regroupant depuis 2008 des chercheurs italiens et français qui confrontent leurs regards autour des débats scientifiques dans le champ de la géographie sociale. La thématique proposée pour l’édition 2014 est issue des questionnements de chercheurs du laboratoire et de leurs partenaires italiens sur la fabrique de la ville dans un contexte où la question de la crise paraît omniprésente dans les discours dominants. Ces journées permettront de saisir comment en Italie et en France les géographes travaillant sur la production et sur les pratiques des espaces urbains intègrent la notion de crise dans leurs travaux. Notre objectif sera donc de mettre en discussion les effets de l’interprétation des contextes et des devenirs des villes en termes de crise urbaine, environnementale, politique ou économique.

  Combining scientific Expertise with Participation: the Challenge of the European Landscape Convention

  The adoption of the European Landscape Convention (ELC) in 2000 represents a major event in taking landscape into account at the European level. As of June 2013, 38 Council of Europe member states have ratified the Convention. By specifying that landscape is an essential component of the quality of life of Europeans, the Convention is, first and foremost, in line with a territorial dimension. Moreover, a strong foundation of the ELC lies in its specific definition of landscape, notably based on the notion of perception by populations. One of the scientists’ major concerns is therefore how to reconcile objective scientific approaches with the subjective aspect of citizens’ perception. After more than a decade of practice, the Conference will be an opportunity for scientists who have been working in line with the ELC to present the tools developed and to reflect on their tangible, measurable and observable effects.

  What "dovetailing" and "resistance" in the stakes of local development?

  Dix ans après une série de rencontres scientifiques organisées à l’Institut royal de formation des cadres de la jeunesse et des sports (IRFC) de Rabat, au sujet des sports et loisirs analysés sous l’angle des sciences sociales, l’ambition de ce colloque, proposé en octobre 2013 de nouveau à Rabat, vise à poursuivre les collaborations scientifiques à l’aune de nouveaux terrains de recherche. L’objet de cette manifestation consiste ainsi à interroger l’impact de la massification des activités physiques, des sports et de leur intégration au « tourisme sportif » sur les modes de consommation qui lui sont liés (du côté de la demande), sur les stratégies de diversification de l’offre sportive qu’elle soit associative ou commerciale et in fine sur l’économie touristique locale ou régionale.

  Fourth Franco-Spanish encounters: Geography, language and literary texts

  Depuis une quarantaine d’années environ les sciences humaines et sociales accordent dans leurs travaux une place de plus en plus importante à l’inscription spatiale des faits sociaux et humains. Or, il est intéressant de remarquer comment ce « tournant spatial » s’accompagne également aujourd’hui d’un véritable regain d’intérêt pour les questions relatives à l’imaginaire, notamment géographique. C’est ainsi que les études géographiques et littéraires analysent aussi et désormais le vaste champ de l’imaginaire géographique, des représentations de l’espace en littérature, des géographies imaginaires que peuvent dessiner certaines œuvres littéraires.

  Revue Belgeo

  This special issue of Belgeo is dedicated to the relations between art and space (publication planned for autumn 2014). We suggest three main directions for articles: the first one aims to collect epistemological reflections concerning the development of a geography of art(s), to understand its specificities and contributions. The other two consider artistic spatialities with two complementary approaches, related to the localisation and the spatial dynamics of individuals and artistic phenomena. This call for papers is aimed at researchers of different fields interested in the spatial dimensions of artistic phenomena.
