  Up to a certain point, the way we move to cities is the way we live cities. We choose our transportation based on the time, the safety of the way etc. From home to work or to the school, from work to a leisure activity, to visit a friend, regardless of where we are going, we always think about the best way to commute and get there. However, getting around the city is not a democratic act, yet. Living in the periphery is not the same as living in the city center, and such a distinction implies the time of travel, the costs and the supply of the types of transportation that we will have access to. On the other hand, and simultaneously, new forms of mobility emerge every day that are not always consensual in the urban context where they arise.

  Focusing on the intersections of exile, artistic practice and urban space, this international conference brings together researchers committed to revising the historiography of ‘modern’ art. Part of the ERC research project Relocating Modernism: Global Metropolises, Modern Art and Exile (METROMOD), it addresses metropolitan areas that were settled by migrant artists in the first half of the 20^th century.

L’enjeu sera de permettre à la pratique architecturale de se positionner par rapport à cette thématique universelle des risques et à questionner par le biais d’une démarche réflexive la formation des futures architectes.   Les principaux centres de l’art nouveau sont, le plus souvent, des villes provinciales qui ne sont pas des capitales traditionnelles de l’art. Ce sont également des villes qui connaissent à la fin du XIX^e siècle une grande prospérité et un développement urbanistique important. Strasbourg et Riga sont, de ce point de vue, dans une situation tout à fait comparable. Ce colloque international propose de mettre en parallèle la situation des deux villes au tournant des XIX^e et XX^e siècles autant que les contextes politiques et culturels ayant permis l’éclosion d’un centre de production artistique fin de siècle.

  For centuries, the study of time was one of the main academic interests in the field of Humanities. However, in the second half of the 20^th century, most scholars and philosophers shifted their focus to the question of space. The interest in studying this in the field of the arts has increased significantly in recent years, and is especially noticeable in the case of literary creations.The growing influence of ecocriticism and geocriticism is especially noticeable in digital humanities. The bridges recently built between these fields are already proving to be productive, as they have led to the development of new tools, approaches, and methodologies, such as deep mapping techniques and the spatial humanities. How have the disciplines evolved in recent years? Do we need to redefine the key concepts regarding space and place? Has our relationship with territory changed? Have we produced new ways of inhabiting space?

  Building for worship - artistic projects and techniques in the 20th century

  Projets artistiques et techniques au XXe siècle

  Le XX^e siècle a connu en France un bouleversement majeur avec l’avènement de la loi de Séparation (1905) entre institutions politiques et organes religieux à l'origine du changement de statut et de commanditaires des édifices cultuels. Leur histoire ne peut s’appréhender au XX^e siècle sans interroger la production d’œuvres majeures, dont le symbolisme ou l'abstraction ont aussi nourrit de vifs débats sur le rapport entre la modernité et le sacré. Les projets reflétent ces évolutions, accélérées par les reconstructions d’après-guerre et les nouveaux besoins liés à la croissance urbaine et à la démocratisation. De nombreux architectes parmi les plus représentatifs de leur génération se sont emparés de ces programmes : ils ont fait de l’édifice cultuel un laboratoire de réflexion et d’expérimentation des apports du modernisme, ils y ont exercé leur créativité, leur engagement et leur liberté.

  The symposium aims at creating a place for sharing and discussion on research in architecture and urbanism, artistic practice and studio pedagogy. It does so by reflecting upon epistemological and cognitive strategies and tools used in understanding and shaping our space, from the immediate human body and its extensions to the territory. As such, the symposium proposes to explore theoretical, practical and ethical connections that link our ways-of-knowing with the ways-of-doing to be desired for a common future. We encourage the participation of researchers, educators and practitioners from architecture and urbanism, the humanities, artistic research as well as philosophy, psychology and social sciences. The symposium is open to the participation and attendance of people from any field and academic discipline who might see their ideas overlap the proposed themes. Additionally, we encourage the participation of artists and researchers working on art-based research.
