Entre l’« Orient » et l’« Occident » : représentations en miroir

Cette journée d’étude a pour objet de penser les imaginaires croisés de l’« Orient » et de l’« Occident » au sein des productions théâtrales et spectaculaires, opératiques et cinématographiques de diverses aires culturelles. Ces imaginaires se reflètent les uns dans les autres et se répondent, et ils contribuent à fabriquer des hiérarchies aux effets bien réels. Le champ d’étude sera restreint, d’un côté, aux espaces géographiques qui constituent l’ancienne « route de la soie » (en partant de l’Égypte et de la Turquie pour aller jusqu’à la Chine et au Japon, en passant par l’Iran et l’Inde); de l’autre, à une Europe aux contours en perpétuelle redéfinition. Les contributions se concentreront sur la période allant du XVI^e au XXI^e siècle.

Les camps de la pauvreté. Migrations internes forcées

À l’occasion de l’exposition photographique de Danilo De Marco, « Les Camps de la Pauvreté. Migrations internes forcées des Kurdes de Turquie (1990-2000) », présentée à l’Humathèque du 12 décembre 2025 au 21 février 2026, nous vous proposons un cycle de conférences. Il met en lumière des études de cas qui montrent que les migrations forcées ne constituent pas un phénomène temporaire. Elles engendrent une marginalisation durable des populations concernées : perte de leurs terres et de leurs moyens de subsistance, rupture avec leurs traditions et leur culture, déscolarisation des enfants, précarisation économique et exclusion sociale. Ces effets, ainsi que les défis qu’ils soulèvent, doivent être envisagés dans une perspective de long terme.

(Re)Thinking the Role of Religion in Social and Humanitarian Action: Preaching in a Transnational Approach

This workshop seeks to explore the links between preaching and socio-humanitarian action in the contemporary Middle East. Contexts of social and humanitarian crises appear as privileged sites for understanding this constitutive device of faith experiences, beyond the sole framework of the sermon or religious discourse. The chosen approach is deliberately cross-cutting: it brings Islam, Judaism, and Christianity into dialogue, while situating the Middle East within a global perspective. How does preaching accompany and shape social and humanitarian action? In what forms and according to which modalities does it unfold? How does it influence the understanding and implementation of aid?

Il s’agit de mettre en lumière non seulement les mécanismes de domination, d’invisibilisation et d’exclusion qui déterminent la circulation des savoirs, mais aussi d’explorer les voies possibles vers des sciences humaines et sociales plus inclusives, plurielles et réellement transfrontalières, en résonance directe avec le thème général du congrès.

Scènes arabes en festivals

Enjeux de la circulation des œuvres et des artistes arabes dans les festivals internationaux

Dans le contexte d’une internationalisation croissante des échanges artistiques et d’une présence accrue des artistes arabes sur les scènes européennes, nous nous intéressons aux liens entre les festivals et la scène théâtrale arabe contemporaine. Une première approche s’inscrit dans l’étude socio-économique du spectacle vivant, et l’internationalisation des champs. Une autre approche est esthétique et interroge davantage les formes, les genres, les types de récits proposés. À la convergence de ces différentes approches se trouve la question des liens entre théâtre et politique, dans des contextes régionaux et internationaux fortement marqués par des enjeux (géo)politiques.

Since the beginning of the 20^th century, the Arab world has undergone rapid urbanization. Today, global cities in the region such as Doha and Dubai have themselves become exporters of new urban paradigms to the wider Arab world and beyond. This issue of EchoGéo aims to explore these urban metamorphoses through a multidisciplinary and comparative approach, connecting dynamics across North Africa and the Middle East, and to bridge three elements: understanding the forces that deeply transform Arab cities, examining how they unfold in concrete places, and giving full attention to the resistances, detours, and inventions that redraw urban life.

Re-creating Palestine : Trauma, Memory and Resistance in the Contemporary Artistic Production in/on Palestine

This international conference aims to explore the central role of culture and art in the reconstruction and regeneration of the social fabric, through a reinterpretation of trauma as a driver of creation and preservation of cultural memory and as a form of resistance to the politics of erasure. We encourage papers dealing with the interconnections between trauma, memory and resistance in multiple artistic languages to highlight the role of art in reinterpreting trauma, making it a source of memory and thus a basis for social change. The focus will be on the artistic production, especially during the 21st century, created by Palestinian artists about Palestine, including those in the diaspora.

While considering the ongoing changes in the SWANA region, the conference has the ambition to lay the foundation for new research projects on youths that explore how the challenges and intersections within existing approaches can contribute to advancing research. We are looking to bring together researchers to consider the legacy of earlier youth mobilizations on today’s youth, whilst discussing new and emerging research which enables theoretical, methodological, and spatial ways of understanding the lived experiences and futures of young people in the region. We will examine the extent to which this category can be mobilized as an analytical tool in its own right, and we question its conceptual relevance, as well as its limits and its potential blind spots.

Elles révèlent également des pratiques informelles et des formes de résistance qui redéfinissent les relations entre citoyens et pouvoirs. En quoi ces observations pourraient-elles influencer notre compréhension des dynamiques urbaines contemporaines ? Quelles nouvelles perspectives pourraient émerger de cette relecture des villes arabes ?

Ce colloque propose une réflexion comparative sur les enjeux de l’ère post Assad, en mettant l’accent sur la question de la sortie de la violence et de la (re)construction sociale, politique et économique. Il abordera les effets de la violence, la gestion de la masse de ses traces et à la nécessité de justice. A Century of Revolutions

Centennial of the Great Syrian Revolt (1925-2025)

The symposium will explore the 1925-1927 Great Syrian Revolt and its various interpretations throughout a ‘Century of Revolutions’. The actors, initiating factors and dynamics of the movement will be discussed, as will be the relationships between the countryside, cities and the ‘bâdiyya’ (the Syrian desert). Both the thawra itself and its violent repression will be studied, and great attention will be granted to peripheries beyond typical Syrian borders. The new opportunities which could arise from the fall of the al-Assad regime in December 2024, in particular access to new archival documents and data, will be at the centre of our discussions. Finally, this centenary will enable us to analyse the Great Syrian Revolt as a cultural phenomenon, and not solely a political and military struggle.

The "new clothes" of authoritarianism in the Middle East

Confluences Méditerranée Journal

Authoritarianism in the Middle East has undergone a series of mutations, in various forms, without in many cases fundamentally shaking its traditional patrimonial, military and rentier structures. The "Arab Springs" of 2011 revealed the flaws in these systems. However, recent developments have also illustrated how the notion of political change can actually amount to a veneer of continuity. Many of these regimes have adapted to popular protest and overcome it by adopting a range of measures - from liberalisation to cooperation, from modernisation to coercion. With this in mind, this issue of Confluences Méditerranée will look at this complex issue through a series of interdisciplinary contributions based on existing literature and grounded in field studies.
