In addition, this conference will provide a comprehensive overview to date of the Arabian Gulf at a time of major political change, including the successive arrival of the European “trading empires”. Climate and Societies in the Mediterranean during the Last Two Millennia

Current State Of Knowledge and Research Perspectives

This two-day international conference aims to highlight recent and challenging interdisciplinary studies dealing with complex historical climate/society interactions in Mediterranean during the last two millennia. The study of these existing connections can help in better understanding the role played by past climatic events in the eruption of regional conflicts, in forced migration and displacement of people, in periodically appearing infectious disease outbreaks or in subsistence crises like food shortages and famines Similarly, it seems necessary to identify and analyze socio-economic and technological responses (e.g. water supply systems) together with mitigation and general adaptation strategies, insofar as they existed, to cope with climate change.

The massacre of Pya-Hodo in Kabiye, North Togo, 60 years later

The lessons of a past that isn't passing

Moving Beyond Paris and London: Influences, Circulation, and Rivalries in Fashion and Textiles between France and England, 1700-1914

By looking closely at the relationship—at times friendly, at times not—between France and England through fashion and textiles between 1700 and 1914, this conference will touch on a number of topics, including: the circulation (lawful or illicit) of knowledge, individuals, and objects; the diffusion – and cross-fertilization – of design models between the two countries via press, engravings, or fashion dolls; the importation of textiles and clothing; the phenomena of copying, espionage, and counterfeits; the pursuit of protectionist policies which aimed to limit imports from the rival nation.

Europe and the Cold War – Changes and Disruptions

5th Annual Meeting “Europe and the World”

Benelux: Europe and the Cold War

The Power of non-powers and perspectives on the economic, social and political aspects of European Security Strategy in the early Cold War

What are the historical roots of views of European defense and Europe's role in Western defence? How did the early European Integration movement perceive American involvement in the development of a common security strategy? This conference will investigate these and other related questions by re-examining the early cold war US/European relationship and the role that early Cold War period developments played in the European Integration Movement. In so doing, this conference will also showcase findings which can contribute to the unification of Cold War and European Integration historiographies.

Capitalism and inequality in the United States
