  Body, culture and identity in Lavapies, Madrid

  From the individual to the collective

  The objective of this Seminar is to stress the importance of a collaborative and participative way to understand through our senses. We want to explore connections between thinking and action in everyday city experiences, developing “in situ” actions. We consider that the knowledge of the space need space experiences. We aim to develop a collective, community exploration of the vital flow of the Lavapiés area in Madrid altering the classical relationship between artist, landscape and inhabitants. This exploration will allow the construction of an intangible map of audiovisual fragments, photo, phonographs, video art, performative actions. The direct experimentation of space helps us understand it, as well as "to perform it"; it helps us understand the aesthetic and emotional relationships we have with it. In order to get our objectives, urban artists, soundscape experts, theater groups, architects, philosopher, civil and social associations, citizens…will be invited.

  Actors, stakes and methods

  The history of medieval architecture was written, from the mid-19^th century, by men whose training, career and objectives were variable. In fact, they each developed their methods of analysis and their reading grids of medieval buildings, which are at the origin of our practices in art history and archeology. To be interested in these men and their works: this is the purpose of this study day that will allow to implement, at the scale of Western Europe, this epistemological approach of the medieval sciences dedicated to the castral, civil or religious building. Beyond the monuments themselves, which take the place of a major source, correspondences of scientists, archives of learned societies, photographs, old drawings, or the funds of historical monuments, for example, may be used to deal with one or more of the topics presented below.

  Pour son XXXII^e colloque, les travaux de l’association française pour la peinture murale antique visent à explorer toutes les facettes de la peinture et du stuc antiques. Divers axes structureront ainsi leurs débats : l’actualité de la recherche en France et dans les provinces occidentales de l’Empire (Suisse, Allemagne,Espagne, Italie…) et même au-delà ; des synthèses régionales ou thématiques, présentant des conclusions plus générales à l’échelle d’un territoire donné, d’une époque, ou se penchant plus sécifiquement sur un type de production, de mode... ; les avancées méthodologiques dans tous les domaines ; la reprise de dossiers anciens, les archives, l’historiographie de la peinture murale et plus largement du décor en contexte architectural ; et, enfin, l’iconographie par l’analyse de modes de représentation de certains thèmes mythologiques ou autres, l’examen de certains motifs...

  Narratives of emotion in contemporary artistic practices

  Dans le cadre de cette journée d’étude, nous choisissons de remettre l’affect au centre du débat artistique et cherchons à réinvestir ses notions à la lumière des pratiques récentes. Il s’agit alors d’analyser ce phénomène en tant que manifestation et signe d’un renouveau de l’expérience artistique et de la pensée esthétique. Les communications que nous sollicitons offrirons ainsi des pistes de compréhension sur la manière dont l’art peut potentiellement nous heurter, nous toucher, et, davantage, nous transformer et nourrir notre capacité à influencer le monde. Aussi, cette journée d’étude s’inscrit d’emblée dans une diversité d’approches scientifiques et artistiques à travers la prise en considération des apports théoriques de l’esthétique, de la théorie de l’art, des arts du spectacle, mais aussi de la psychologie et de l’anthropologie.

  Claudine Eizykman : to make cinema think

  Ce colloque s’inscrit dans le cadre d’une série de manifestations dédiées à la singularité des contributions et actions de Claudine Eizykman, disparue en Juin 2018, dans le champ du cinéma, des années 1970 à 2018. Il vise à revenir sur les diverses facettes de ces activités protéiformes, de leurs interconnexions et cohérence selon une démarche qu’elle a nommée holistique qui n’aura négligé aucun des aspects d’une remise à l’ordre du jour des avant-gardes et du cinéma expérimental, de ses conditions matérielles et politiques d’existence à une refondation radicale de la théorie du cinéma. De la NRI (narration représentation industrielle) au film-après-coup, c’est le tout du cinéma qui est appréhendé à partir de ses constituants et des avant-gardes comme lieu d’une expérience originaire.

  Les fragments d’architecture – qu’ils soient conservés dans les sites ou monuments même, dans des musées, dans des centres archéologiques… – forment soit les uniques vestiges d’édifices détruits, soit les témoins épars parmi les ruines, ou relèvent d’un dépôt constitué lors des restaurations engagées sur un monument ou à la suite de chantiers archéologiques. La diversité de leur nature et de leur lieu de conservation ainsi que de leur propriétaire appelle cependant des questionnements similaires quant à leur gestion, leur étude, fondamentale pour l’apport à la connaissance monumentale, et leur valorisation.

  Prison spaces in the Middle Ages: an interdisciplinary approach to the territories and materialities of medieval incarceration

  While recent work has renewed our knowledge of medieval execution sites and of the internal layout of detention facilities, much remains to be done to understand the distribution of prison spaces and territories, in particular to shed light on the socio-spatial dynamics and logic of their establishment. These prison spaces evolved between the beginning and the extreme end of the Middle Ages, with prisons only multiplying from the 13th century onwards. These evolutions must be understood in close coordination with the evolutions of medieval justice and its spatial practices. Studies can be carried out at the scale of a building, a neighborhood, a city, a city, one or more regions.

  Playing and operating: functionality in museum objects and instruments

  Museum collections are formed by selections of objects that represent snapshots of the complexity of the world at different times. As such their value resides as much in their physical supports, as in the representation of the cultural networks of meanings and interactions of which there were part. For some types of objects, this includes a particularly strong ‘performative’ element, where the object is a tool to accomplish an action: musical instruments, vehicles, clocks and watches, machinery and objects of science and technology are few of the most obvious examples. For decades, museum approaches have been divided between emphasizing the preservation of the material support of the object, and preserving its capability to operate, for reasons that include dissemination as well as research.

  The imaginary world surrounding digital communication seems to impose a vision that crushes cultural diversity. The Symposium aims to jointly explore the heterogeneity of uses, productions and issues raised by the meeting of globalised technology that is often Western-centred, with various cultures. The first edition will focus on Francophone sub-Saharan Africa, a multicultural territory where contemporary geopolitical contexts pose particularly vital issues for communications research. These issues are of interest mainly to the information and communication sciences community, but the contributions of researchers from various cultural and disciplinary horizons will make it possible to tackle this very broad problem of communication, especially digital, in sensitive areas, according to different complementary approaches.

  European ways of inciting and containing armed conflict, 1648-2020

  The history of Europe is as much about violence and divisions – including religious wars, national clashes and ideological conflicts – as it is about shared cultural, social and economic accomplishments. If war has been such a constant presence in the history unfolding on the continent, the incessant efforts to limit its destructiveness are also an undeniable fact. It was such efforts that eventually led to the birth of Jus ad bellum and, ultimately, laid down the foundations of modern international law. From such a viewpoint, one might even find another definition of what European history might be. Some scholars have suggested that if war has structured a common European space, the containment of violence and the art of peacemaking have constituted ‘Europe’ in thought and practice.

  "Modernas, flappers, and garçonnes": the representation of femininity in the 1920s and 1930s

  Spanish, French and Anglo-Saxon perspectives

  Ce colloque sera l’occasion de créer un espace consacré à la représentation d’une féminité de l’« entre-deux » dans plusieurs aires géographiques (Espagne, France, Royaume-Uni, États-Unis, etc.). Des questions de genre littéraire, de genre et d’identité sexuelle, de réseaux d’intellectuelles et de géographies spécifiques se rencontrent, notamment sous un angle géocritique, pour mettre en avant des femmes et des représentations de la féminité souvent oubliées. En prenant en compte les quatre « points cardinaux » d’une approche géocritique (multifocalisation, polysensoralité, stratigraphie, intertextualité), nous allons entre autres questionner les espaces de sociabilité de ces femmes et la construction de la moderna ou de la garçonne.
