1917-2017: Comparative Looks on the Soviet Artistic Avant-Gardes
The Soviet artistic avant-gardes have been raising a specific interest for a long time. For instance, their multiple practices, their theoretical apparatus, their opuses as well as the influences they exerted have been largely surveyed by the academic world. Ever since the 1990’s a reappraisal of the multiple reuses and reinterpretations of those “avant-gardes” have been carried out. Our international symposium aims to question and put into context that reappraisal and the renewal it induces in the field of scholarly research. The year 2017 as an historical landmark, the centenary of the Russian revolutions, offers a conducive environment for such reflections and thoughts. While evocating various and contradictory narratives, this centenary leads to rethink the vast array of meanings embodied by the revolutionary events as well as to shed a new light on the opuses they produced or lived through.

Visual and textual representations of the act of donation in the arts in the early modern period
Cette rencontre ambitionne d’étudier l’acte de donation au cours de la première modernité, un acte que l’on envisagera comme forme de communication et comme acteur du lien social. C’est plus précisément la mise en scène du don d’œuvres d’art et d’objets que l’on souhaite interroger. Car pour pouvoir participer pleinement de l’affirmation d’un statut ou d’un pouvoir, cet acte suppose un espace de visibilité et de représentation, assurant sa publicité au sein d’une communauté. Deux axes de réflexion complémentaires seront privilégiés : celui des mécanismes visuels, rhétoriques et littéraires qui participent de la mise en scène du don ; et celui de ses effets au sein des dynamiques relationnelles qu’il institue.

Comment les artistes depuis la Renaissance ont-ils mis en espace ou en séquence temporelle le récit guerrier de manière à susciter une expérience du regard, voire une expérience physique de l’événement chez le spectateur ? De la peinture de la Renaissance au cinéma contemporain, ce colloque entend retracer la mise en images de la bataille selon différents médiums, en étudiant l'ambition politique, voire éthique, de cette immersion visuelle dans l'événement militaire.

The reception of Swiss art in the context of the eighteenth-century European Grand Tour
In 2018, a special issue of the Zeitschrift für Schweizerische Archäologie und Kunst (ZAK) will be dedicated to Swiss art in the eighteenth century. Focusing on the context of European travel culture, the issue will address the various ways in which Grand Tourists perceived, purchased, and collected Swiss art objects during and after their travels. This perspective will help to gain new insight into the distribution and reception of Swiss art in eighteenth-century Europe.

State-Rooms of Royal and Princely Palaces in Europe (14th-16th c.)
Spaces, images, rituals
From the fourteenth to the sixteenth century, European monarchies saw a gradual centralisation of power. This was accompanied by the dissemination of political ideas that contributed to the making of a new image of the prince, which relied on visual instruments to assert and construct the prince’s sovereign power. Royal and princely residences with their designated state-rooms were at the centre of this phenomenon. Their decors, particularly during ceremonies, reflected political interests and ambitions that were essential to the image of the prince. By placing a particular emphasis on the decor of those state-rooms, this workshop aims to increase our insights into the relations between the architecture, decoration, and rituals of monarchical power in state-rooms from the late middle ages to the beginning of the early modern period.

The politics and aesthetics of cinematic sensationalism in rituals, bodies and death
Cette journée d’étude porte sur le documentaire controversé Africa Addio (1966) et le genre cinématographique Mondo. Souvent qualifié de docu-horreur ou de cinéma-mensonge en raison de ses images sensationnalistes, ses biais primitivistes et ses montages à l’uppercut, le genre Mondo concerne tout particulièrement l’Afrique : Africa Addio fut tourné par deux réalisateurs italiens, Gualtiero Jacopetti et Franco Prosperi, au moment des indépendances africaines. Il montre des événements historiques délibérément décontextualisés pour peindre un continent en proie à la violence sanguinaire et appuyer un propos paternaliste et pro-colonialiste. Cette journée sera l’occasion de discuter des aspects plus proprement cinématographiques et visuels du genre Mondo.

The Instituto de Estudos Medievais (IEM) and the Instituto de História da Arte (IHA) of the Faculdade de Ciências Sociais e Humanas of the Universidade Nova de Lisboa (FCSH/NOVA), along with the Centro de Investigação e Estudos em Belas Artes (CIEBA) of the Faculdade de Belas Artes of the Universidade de Lisboa, and in collaboration with the Museu Nacional de Arte Antiga in Lisbon, are organizing the International Congress “Souls of Stone. Funerary Sculpture: from the Creation to the Musealization”. Historians, museologists, restorers and all the researchers in general working on the topic are invited to submit proposals

Forms and issues in intermediality in the European space (15th-21st centuries)
Le colloque Formes et (en)jeux de l’intermédialité dans l’espace européen (XVe-XXIe siècles) propose un tour d'horizon épistémologique de l'intermédialité. Située dans un « entre-deux » tant méthodologique que disciplinaire – car naviguant en permanence entre systèmes de signes, arts et médias –, la réfléxion sur l'intermédialité peut s’organiser selon deux axes principaux : mise(s) en relation intermédiales : le passage du mot à l’image (fixe et/ou mobile) et inversement et mise(s) en scène intermédiales : de l’idéal du Gesamtkunstwerk aux performances contemporaines.

Creation and subversion in fin de siècle popular imagery
A transnational and transmedial perspective
L’objet de ce séminaire est d’interroger la capacité subversive et créatrice de l’image populaire fin de siècle dans ses différentes expressions médiales et dans un cadre transnational qui permette d’en saisir la complexité. Il s’agit de mettre en évidence les mécanismes, la puissance et la subtilité avec lesquels les systèmes de références culturellement prégnants sont remis en cause, de montrer l’utilisation effrénée des possibles d’une étendue médiale et géographique inédite pour générer de la valeur esthétique et sociale. En examinant les œuvres phares de la modernité esthétique, on relève une composante populaire, littérale et pour tout dire vulgaire, permettant de tracer une zone de convergence entre les images dites populaires et des créations socialement valorisées.

Les Archives nationales et l’université Sorbonne Nouvelle-Paris 3 organisent une première journée d’étude consacrée à la politique cinématographique française de l’entre-deux-guerres à la création du ministère de la Culture en 1959. Cet événement constitue l’aboutissement d’un projet de recherche mené durant l’année universitaire 2015-2016 avec un groupe d’étudiants inscrits en master dans le séminaire « Face aux archives » du département cinéma et audiovisuel de l’université Sorbonne Nouvelle-Paris 3 (UFR arts et médias).

13th Conference of the European Sociological Association, ESA 2017
The “Visual and Filmic Sociology” Research Stream seeks to observe and analyse a Europe undergoing major transformation by means of photographs and videos produced by sociologists themselves. Europe is both an abstraction and a daily reality. It is a major long-term project that brings people together while also regulating and structuring their activities. These regulations pertain to policy areas ranging from agricultural production to industrial standards, competition law and the free movement of people. At the same time, Europe disorganises production (through tax competition and social dumping, out-of-control financialisation, etc.) while exacerbating conflicts between people around problems like unemployment and social inequality. Hence the growing polarisation between the agricultural, urban, industrial and other spaces where people live.
