Artus Désiré. Fighting through song
Ce séminaire vise à étudier le rôle d’Artus Désiré (c. 1510 – c. 1579) dans les combats spirituels en musique menés dans le contexte du déclenchement des guerres de religion en confrontant des approches historique (T. Debbagi Baranova), littéraire (J. Goeury) et musicologique (A. Tacaille). Trois recueils du polémiste catholique feront en particulier l’objet d’une analyse systématique : les Hymnes ecclesiastiques (1ere éd., Rouen, 1553), le Contrepoison des cinquante-deux chansons de Clément Marot (Paris, 1560), les Plaisans et armonieux cantiques (Paris, 1561). Ce séminaire est ouvert à tous.

Exploring the potentials of the name in images, in narratives
The ERC MAP Seminar “The Names of the Gods! 4: Exploring the potentials of the name in images, in narratives” pursues the investigation on the systems of naming of the divine. By focusing on names, images and narratives, we will look for connections but also discrepancies, in order to highlight, from duly selected cases or files, the specifications of the different languages used to unfold the potentials of the divine names. In the spirit of the MAP project, we will pay special attention to the links that the names, the images and the narratives convey.

L’objectif du séminaire « Femmes et religions en Méditerranée » est de s’intéresser à la manière dont les femmes des deux rives de la Méditerranée ont vécu dans le passé, et vivent et interagissent actuellement, dans un espace social, culturel et religieux particulier. L’espace méditerranéen est en effet marqué depuis des siècles par la concurrence de plusieurs traditions religieuses qui partagent - entre autres - une même culture fondatrice apparue dans un contexte antique, médiéval (ou même moderne), de nature résolument patriarcale.

Ancient religion in rural settlements
XVIII International ARYS Conference
This conference aims to deconstruct the ideas of rural religion as mechanically reproducing urban rituals and religious hierarchies and of the rural world as a space of cultural and religious resilience against urbanity. Rural areas represented an arena for very situational processes of negotiation between, on the one hand, administrative patterns and related social configurations, and, on the other hand, processes of social conformance to the very characteristics of a local specific rural environment, of adaptation to its peculiar habitus and religious customs, possibly involving gods whose competences directly mirrored a geophysical environment made of mountains, rivers, woods, etc.

Strategies of Human-Divine Communication in the Roman Empire from Individual Experience to Social Reproduction
The Department of Historical Science at the University of Málaga and the Institute of Historiography “Julio Caro Baroja” at the University of Carlos III of Madrid are organizing an international conference titled “Calling upon gods, offering bodies. Strategies of human-divine communication in the Roman Empire from individual experience to social reproduction”. Researchers of Ancient History, History of Religion, Archaeology, Anthropology, Classics, and other related fields are invited to present their research on this topic. The conference aims at analysing how self-experience of religious communication becomes a reflexive phenomenon reproduced in time and space to constitute a collectively shared narrative.

Plural approaches to the religious
Pour la troisième année consécutive, la section des sciences religieuses de l'École pratique des hautes études (EPHE) présente sa journée scientifique : la journée scientifique des sciences religieuses (JSSR). La JSSR a pour but de présenter les recherches des membres de la section, aussi bien enseignants-chercheurs que doctorants et post-doctorants. Cette année, la journée est construite autour de quatre sessions, croisant des approches historiques, anthropologiques, sociologiques et philosophiques.

Organised by the ERC Advanced Grant “Mapping Ancient Polytheisms. Cult Epithets as an Interface between Religious Systems and Human Agency” (MAP - 741182), the conference Naming and Mapping the gods in the Ancient Mediterranean. Spaces, Mobilities, Imaginaries hopes to bring together the competences and specialties of multiple disciplines – archaeology, history, geography, anthropology, history of religions, philology, reception, social network analysis – in order to consider new documentation corpora concerning the intersection between the divine and space. Among other things, the conference aims to propose an innovative angle of approach: the intersection between the spaces and designations of the gods.

ERC project “Mapping Ancient Polytheisms” – PhD position
The ERC Advanced Grant “Mapping Ancient Polytheisms. Cult Epithets as an Interface between Religious Systems and Human Agency” (MAP - 741182) offers a funded PhD position in the field of History of Ancient Religions, to be filled by 1 October 2019 for a period of 36 months in Toulouse (France). The project will deal with a significant corpus of inscriptions coming from the Greek colonies founded in the East, between Syria and the Indus, and providing evidence on the presence of Greek and non Greek gods.

Call for papers - Ethnology, anthropology
Déjà évoqué chez des auteurs fondateurs des sciences sociales françaises, puis repris dans des études classiques sur le jeu, l’étude des rapports entre jeux et faits religieux connaît un renouveau d’intérêt depuis quelques années dans le monde anglo-saxon, et plus spécifiquement dans le domaine des jeux vidéo. Le Heidelberg Journal of Religions on the Internet a consacré plusieurs numéros à cette thématique, et une nouvelle revue, Gamevironments, lui est entièrement consacrée. Cet appel à contribution invite les chercheurs francophones à investir ce champ de recherche et à l’élargir à tout type de jeux afin d’éclairer la diversité des manières d’aborder ces questions. Les différents axes proposés ici ne sont pas exhaustifs et toute proposition consacrée aux rapports entre jeux et faits religieux est la bienvenue et sera évaluée.

Digital Humanities in Biblical Studies and Theology
We invite submission of papers dedicated to the phenomenologically determined themes of imagination, image-consciousness, appearance and the non-apparent, phenomenological ontology, and genetic phenomenology, with regard to religious experience. We further invite innovative philosophical and theological reflections on image, imagination, and creativity in religious experiencing, as well as reflections on a reverse problem of how religious experience contributes to the above mentioned faculties examined in the psychological horizon.

3: Texts, images and contexts of use (January-June 2019)
The ERC MAP Seminar « Noms de dieux ! » 3: “Texts, images and contexts of use” pursues the investigation on the systems of naming of the divine by privileging two main issues: the contexts of enunciation and the imaging of "divine onomastic attributes". While the session program focuses on the Greek and Western Semitic worlds (in the broad sense), it aims to propose case studies as well as theoretical proposals. Dossiers will be presented dealing in particular with questions related to translation strategies, proper names, the plurality of the divine, interactions between names and images, in various contexts of use: dedications, curses, oaths, hymns and other forms of address.

New Comparative Mythology, a peer-reviewed journal of comparative mythology with an international editorial board, issues, for its fifth volume, a call for papers on the topic “conception, birth and childhood”. In many mythologies, these three initial phases of the existence of divine, heroic, monstrous and other figures have given rise to many traditions. In addition, various beliefs and practices, which are lent legendary or mythical precedents, also rhythm this period which goes from the fertilization to the edge of the initiatory phase of the individuals. It is on the comparative study of this vast field of research that the articles submitted to our review will have to relate.

Childhood, youth and Christian missions. 19th-21st centuries
En 2019, le Centre de Recherches et d'Echanges sur Diffusion et l'Inculturation du Christianisme (CREDIC) consacre son colloque à la jeunesse chrétienne. Organisée dans la catéchèse ecclésiale comme dans des mouvements para-ecclésiaux ou dans des programmes d’engagement volontaire, elle a constamment été au centre des préoccupations des organismes missionnaires. En Europe, comme en Afrique, en Asie et dans les Amériques, elle a été un acteur et un destinataire des activités des Églises et des organisations missionnaires. L’objectif de ce colloque est d’étudier sous les angles historiques, anthropologiques, sociologiques comme psycho-pédagogiques, la place que tient la jeunesse — de l’enfant au jeune adulte — dans les missions outre-mer et dans les Eglises du Sud, depuis le XIXe siècle jusqu’à aujourd’hui.

The temporalities of the sacred - rhythms of religious life

Une approche du sacré (comme catégorie de référence pour qualifier le rapport de l’homme à l’invisible et au surnaturel) et du religieux (comme mise en œuvre institutionnalisée de ce rapport et de ses variantes) en termes de « temporalité » est non seulement pertinente mais à plus d’un titre fédératrice et féconde. Les sciences du religieux ont toutes, en effet, mais sous des angles différents, traité des formes, des déclinaisons et des expériences du temps en tant qu’elles sont des expressions du sacré, mais aussi en tant qu’elles produisent du sacré. Les temporalités du religieux et du sacré méritent qu’on s’y intéresse en ces périodes où les rapports sociaux et politiques entre religions se reconfigurent et les pratiques (inter-) religieuses et syncrétiques se renouvellent, questionnant à nouveaux frais le processus de sécularisation.
