Imperial Mysticisms: Piety and Power in Early Modern Empires from a Global Perspective
Comparative research on the world-wide manifestations of mysticism in the imperial practice and performance of power seems promising for several reasons. It will enable us to highlight the appeal mystical spirituality had within the different religious traditions of the period; to point out historical contacts and transmission lines of a direct or indirect character and to discuss whether these religious and political developments fit into a common historical narrative. Regardless of what the answer to this question will be, we are certain that the elaboration of global perspectives, terminologies and research agendas is a goal worthy of being pursued in its own right. The conference will thus be part of approaches in historiography that aim at overcoming old epistemological boundaries between the study of the Orient and that of the West.

Historiography of the Perception of Islam through Manuscripts, Korans and their Displacement
The aim of this workshop is to approach the question of the relationship between Christianity and Islam through the study of the production, circulation and uses of Arabic manuscripts, and mainly Korans, in the late medieval and early modern Mediterranean Europe. Our assumption is that the Balkans, Italy and the Iberian Peninsula form an axis of circulation which is especially significant for our understanding of the Mediterranean Sea as a comprehensive space of cultural, political and religious contact.

Blasphemy and violence. Interdependencies since 1760
Liberas (Ghent, Belgium), in conjunction with the School of History, Religion and Philosophy at Oxford Brookes University (Oxford, United Kingdom) and the Leibniz Institute of European History (Mainz, Germany), organises an international colloquium devoted to the interdependency between blasphemy and violence in modern history. Both young and established scholars will focus on specific incidents of blasphemy and sacrilege in Europe and the Arab world.The eve preceding the conference (4 March), internationally renowned expert Alain Cabantous will give a keynote lecture in French on blasphemy and sacrilege during the French Revolution.

Les sacres en tant que rites de passage ont joué un grand rôle dans les relations entre les hommes, dans les sociétés tournées vers le monde divin, où le souverain peut intervenir dans la nature en guérissant ses sujets par des miracles, comme en France ou en Angleterre. L’évolution des sacres marque le passage des religions héritées aux religions prescrites, puis aux religions intériorisées où la laïcité se répand, suivant en cela le schéma du philosophe Marcel Gauchet (Le désenchantement du monde. Une histoire politique de la religion, 1985). Cette manifestation scientifique permet de revisiter les liens qu’entretiennent les rites avec la société et l’État.

Le séminaire d’histoire de l’Europe du Centre d'histoire de Sciences Po (CHSP) est cette année dédié à l’étude des musulmans dans les sociétés européennes aux époques moderne et contemporaine. Il s’adresse aux chercheurs confirmés, aux jeunes chercheurs et aux étudiants en master en histoire et en sciences sociales. Il propose une histoire de l’Europe via une étude socio-économique, politique et culturelle des musulman·e·s. et privilégie l’étude d’une population dans sa diversité sociale, culturelle, religieuse, générationnelle et de genre afin de mieux cerner l’évolution des sociétés européennes dont ils sont des acteurs à part entière.

Encounters with subalternity and resilience
The Research Network on Christian Churches, Culture and Society (www.ccsce.eu) fosters historical research on the interaction of religion, culture, and society in Europe from the second half of the eighteenth-century until the present. CCSCE aspires to a renewed approach to religious history, implementing a broad and transnational European perspective. It aims to develop a durable and multidisciplinary research community on the subject, involving both senior and promising young scholars. On 6 and 7 July 2020 CCSCE, in cooperation with KADOC-KU Leuven, is organising an international conference on Religion, social commitment, and female agency. Artus Désiré. Fighting through song
Ce séminaire vise à étudier le rôle d’Artus Désiré (c. 1510 – c. 1579) dans les combats spirituels en musique menés dans le contexte du déclenchement des guerres de religion en confrontant des approches historique (T. Debbagi Baranova), littéraire (J. Goeury) et musicologique (A. Tacaille). Trois recueils du polémiste catholique feront en particulier l’objet d’une analyse systématique : les Hymnes ecclesiastiques (1ere éd., Rouen, 1553), le Contrepoison des cinquante-deux chansons de Clément Marot (Paris, 1560), les Plaisans et armonieux cantiques (Paris, 1561). Ce séminaire est ouvert à tous.

The ERC MAP Seminar “The Names of the Gods! 4: Exploring the potentials of the name in images, in narratives” pursues the investigation on the systems of naming of the divine. By focusing on names, images and narratives, we will look for connections but also discrepancies, in order to highlight, from duly selected cases or files, the specifications of the different languages used to unfold the potentials of the divine names. In the spirit of the MAP project, we will pay special attention to the links that the names, the images and the narratives convey.

L’objectif du séminaire « Femmes et religions en Méditerranée » est de s’intéresser à la manière dont les femmes des deux rives de la Méditerranée ont vécu dans le passé, et vivent et interagissent actuellement, dans un espace social, culturel et religieux particulier. L’espace méditerranéen est en effet marqué depuis des siècles par la concurrence de plusieurs traditions religieuses qui partagent - entre autres - une même culture fondatrice apparue dans un contexte antique, médiéval (ou même moderne), de nature résolument patriarcale.

Olivier Clément, a man in history
Historien, théologien, résistant, Olivier Clément (1921-2009) a traversé le XXe siècle en saisissant ses défis majeurs : le rapport avec le cosmos, les mutations culturelles, les totalitarismes, la place des religions et du christianisme, le nihilisme, la rencontre avec les Orients… Dix ans après sa mort, sa trace et son héritage sont toujours vivants, du Languedoc aux multiples rivages de l’Europe où il a porté sa voix singulière. Ce colloque interrogera son rôle dans le siècle et sa vision des grandes questions de l’humain.

Ancient religion in rural settlements
XVIII International ARYS Conference
This conference aims to deconstruct the ideas of rural religion as mechanically reproducing urban rituals and religious hierarchies and of the rural world as a space of cultural and religious resilience against urbanity. Rural areas represented an arena for very situational processes of negotiation between, on the one hand, administrative patterns and related social configurations, and, on the other hand, processes of social conformance to the very characteristics of a local specific rural environment, of adaptation to its peculiar habitus and religious customs, possibly involving gods whose competences directly mirrored a geophysical environment made of mountains, rivers, woods, etc.

The Department of Historical Science at the University of Málaga and the Institute of Historiography “Julio Caro Baroja” at the University of Carlos III of Madrid are organizing an international conference titled “Calling upon gods, offering bodies. Strategies of human-divine communication in the Roman Empire from individual experience to social reproduction”. Researchers of Ancient History, History of Religion, Archaeology, Anthropology, Classics, and other related fields are invited to present their research on this topic. The conference aims at analysing how self-experience of religious communication becomes a reflexive phenomenon reproduced in time and space to constitute a collectively shared narrative.

Composante essentielle du renouveau intellectuel européen, l’humanisme juridique (it. umanesimo giuridico, angl. legal humanism, all. humanistische Jurisprudenz) se définit par une approche des textes hérités du droit romain qui s’oppose et en même temps complète les traditions médiévales de la glose et du commentaire. Privilégiant les connaissances historiques et linguistiques tirées d’une étude la plus vaste possible des œuvres, monuments et documents de l’Antiquité, les juristes humanistes ont contribué à replacer les écrits du Corpus juris civilis au sein de la civilisation gréco-romaine qui les a vu naître, tout en parachevant l’exégèse déjà mûrie au Moyen Âge grâce au travail des interprètes.

Anniversary conference of the fifty years of the department of the science of religions
L’étude de la religion sous l’égide des sciences humaines a connu un grand essor à la fin des années 1960, au Québec comme dans d’autres parties du monde. Ainsi, à la fondation de l’université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM), en 1969, naissait dans l’espace francophone nord-américain une unité de recherche et d’enseignement laïque entièrement vouée à l’étude des phénomènes religieux. Cinquante ans plus tard, les membres du département de sciences des religions de l’UQAM s’inscrivent dans de multiples perspectives méthodologiques et disciplinaires, souvent entrecroisées, telles que l’anthropologie, la sociologie, l’histoire, la géographie et la philosophie.
