  The Berlin Airlift

  A Realm of Memory of the Cold War

  Whether or not “the entire world” was looking at Berlin, as Reuter asserted, is one of the central questions to be addressed at our conference. Starting from the “frontline city” of Berlin, we will cast our glance to West Germany and its neighboring countries in order not only to frame the Berlin Airlift as a transnational memorial of the Cold War, but also to address, from outside, the question of whether Berlin was really the international focus of the East-West conflict back then, as the press and academia so often portray it.

  La journée d’étude est organisée dans le cadre du LABEX EHNE Écrire une nouvelle histoire de l’Europe avec le soutien du CRHIA (Centre de recherches en histoire internationale et atlantique) et de l’IDHES (Institutions et dynamiques historiques de l’économie et de la société). L’enjeu est de comprendre comment se sont diffusés les produits exotiques en Europe, en prenant en compte la grande différenciation des consommations en fonction des pays, des espaces (maritimes et intérieurs, urbains et ruraux) et des classes sociales, en s’intéressant aux adaptations réalisées pour répondre aux besoins et aux goûts des consommateurs européens.

  The F4 agency - the rejuvenation of photojournalism in Brazil in the 1980s

  Première coopérative photographique créée au Brésil, l’Agence F4 a accompagné les grands mouvements politiques et sociaux qui ont agité le pays dès la fin des années 70. Par son engagement politique et militant, par ses choix esthétiques et thématiques mais aussi grâce à la forte personnalité de ses photographes, l’agence constitue, à bien des égards, un acteur majeur du renouveau du photojournalisme au Brésil dans les années 1980. L’année 2016 marque le 25ème anniversaire de la fermeture de l’Agence F4, l’occasion de revenir sur cette aventure avant tout humaine en donnant la parole aux photographes eux‑mêmes pour mieux cerner leur participation à l’évolution du photojournalisme.

  Since early 2010, there has been an explosion of Indigenous literary and artistic production. One of the most striking features of this creative upsurge is the international recognition of Indigenous artists. But what does it mean to be an “Indigenous” artist in the 21^st century? It must be acknowledged that the notion of “Indigeneity”—its cultural, geopolitical, and historical meanings—is the subject of considerable debate among Indigenous and non-Indigenous artists and theorists. This issue of Captures seeks to shed light upon current debates surrounding the concept of “Indigeneity” in the fields of literature and the visual arts.

  European sexologies, Historical and social approaches

  This conference seeks to assess the current state of research in a thriving field and to create a European research network on the history of sexology. The term sexology here is understood in a broad sense (as scholarly discourse on human sexuality) and the period covered will be large, from the nineteenth century to the early 1970s. The historiography of this field, which like historiography on sexuality dates back to the 1970s and 1980s, is currently undergoing considerable change, through the influence of social and feminist history on the sciences. This has resulted in less focus on the study of paradigms and scientific pronouncements and instead privileged social and material histories of scholars and academic practices

  Medieval Textuality and its material display

  The International Medieval Society organizes its 13^th Annual Symposium in Paris, on the theme of Words in the Middle Ages. Between the increasing use of paperless media forms and the rise in the number of digital collections, medievalists are seeking to adapt to these new means of producing knowledge about the Middle Ages. At the same time, scholars in this field are also trying to outline the methodological and historical issues that affect the study of words, which now simultaneously exist in the form of primary sources, codices, rolls, charters and inscriptions, digitally reproduced images, and the statistical and lexicographical data made possible by storage platforms and analytical tools.

  Material Circulations, Appropriations and the Formation of Identities in the Early Modern Period (16th-18th c.)

  This interdisciplinary conference seeks to confront the material history of early modern objects with their artistic and literary representations. It proposes to look at the various “traces” left by material culture as it circulated and was appropriated. Studying the history of material culture (be it dress and personal accessories, everyday and decorative objects, art works, and technical, scientific, or musical instruments…) sheds light upon the various processes of cultural appropriation, transculturation or hybridization that accompanied such material circulations across Europe or between Europe and the rest of the world.
