  Women in abstrac­tion. Another History of abstrac­tion in the 20th century

  This symposium aims to bring together researchers from diverse backgrounds to collectively reflect on rewriting the history of abstraction by re-evaluating women artists’ contributions to the various abstract art movements. Firstly, it will make it possible to question the history of art conceived as a succession of pioneering practices. By examining the meaning of the term “abstraction” according to the various periods, geographies and media employed, the symposium will seek to demonstrate its complexity. Finally, it will be an opportunity to study the circulation of abstract practices in the world in order to open the debate on the canons established by Western modernity.

  Influence practices in XXth and XXIst Centuries

  The field of influence activities is increasingly proliferating (advertising, propaganda, marketing, public relations, communication, soft power, social psychology, fake news, applied algorithmic, etc.). It is important to grasp not only their scope, but their extension, their dynamics, their practices, their logic, their techniques. Where and on whom do they work? What are their histories? Who are their practitioners? What are their pioneer fronts? Why is it important to consider them just as much each in their specificity, and together? What is the contribution of influence practices to the production of value (economic and political)? From the point of view of the present and from the one of long duration history, is not influence government (a form of governmentality) a major dimension of the deep neoliberal turn the world is experiencing nowadays?

  Desired Identities

  New Technology-based Metamorphosis in Japan

  In Japan, characters now invade social networks up to the point where a whole industry of character-camouflage is prompting millions of web users to merge with videogames-like creatures. How can we understand this phenomenon? What social changes does it contribute to shape and to mirror?During the course of an international workshop, researchers from various disciplines are invited to share their experiences and outcomes concerning this phenomenon, which has been stamped kyara-ka, “transforming into a character” (Aihara Hiroyuki, 2007). It is now giving birth to what Nozawa Shunsuke (2013) calls “an emerging art of self–fashioning”. Based on elaborate techniques of disguises, the kyara-ka phenomenon covers a variety of communication strategies and practices. Exploring all the aspects of this “thingification of humans”, the workshop will reflect on how and why a growing number of people market themselves as characters.

  Science and madness, extravagance, exception

  Alchemists, magicians, outlaw scientists in italian culture

  This volume aims at exploring the ways of science as excess and madness (see Zangrandi 2011, 2017; Garlaschelli and Carrer 2017) or, in less tragic forms, as an opportunity to explore new paths of knowledge. Another goal is to shed light on the character’s evolution, tracing the roots of a literary and cultural trope that, since the 20^th century, takes on multiple configurations and plays manifold functions. Looking back to the past, this theme can be traced in the Romanticism’s rejection of the exact science and in the particular declination proposed by Leopardi in his Operette morali, or even in the disquieting image of the alchemist of the Renaissance, whose superior knowledge of natural phenomena turns into the extreme and a punishable hybris.

  Le mot institution désigne, selon l’une des définitions les plus courantes, un « organisme public ou privé, régime légal ou social, établi pour répondre à quelque besoin déterminé d'une société donnée ». Cette définition suscite des images stéréotypées : bâtiments officiels, bureaux, fonctionnaires, textes réglementaires… Elles s’étendent aux institutions artistiques, couramment associées à des lieux emblématiques – musées, théâtres, académies… –, ainsi qu’à des instances de subvention, de transmission ou de patrimonialisation de l’art. L’institution est parfois vue comme un pur instrument de contrainte normative, lieu de « récupération » voire de répression, opposée caricaturalement à la liberté, à la spontanéité ou à la subversion de l’art. La doxa ajoute parfois que les artistes se battent contre elles avant de les intégrer : signe d’une reconnaissance bien méritée ou de la pire des compromissions. Le but de ce numéro est d’explorer les relations entre la création artistique et les institutions.

  Migrations and independance: two centuries of witness accounts and repreesentations between Mexico, Central America, Spain and France

  1820-2020

  Tout au long de son histoire et en particulier au XIX^e siècle, la ville de Bordeaux a été le point de départ de milliers d’émigrants vers l’Amérique latine. Dans le sens contraire, à partir du Mexique, commerçants, financiers, diplomates et étudiants, artistes et écrivains ont voyagé puis laissé des traces, des textes et des images diverses sur l’expérience vécue dans le pays d’accueil, l’expérience de l’identité étrangère, la xénophobie ou l’extranéité. Les correspondances, les journaux de bord, les écrits intimes ou publics sont les principales sources explorées à l’occasion du colloque comme expressions d’expériences individuelles et collectives transatlantiques entre le Mexique, l’Amérique centrale et l’Europe.

  The circulation, distribution, and reproduction of images and texts in periodicals at the turn of the century (1870-1930)

  La fin du XIX^e siècle peut être considérée comme l’achèvement d’un ensemble de processus de systématisation et de rationalisation des techniques de production et de diffusion de l’imprimé : au niveau technique, la mise au point des procédés de reproduction photomécanique rendant possible la reproduction à faible coût et sans perte d’information des images et des textes ; au niveau rhétorique, le journalisme valorise des formes simples, directes, qui augmentent l’efficacité communicationnelle. La question que souhaite soulever ce colloque est celle de la pertinence de l’application de la notion de viralité à la culture (et plus particulièrement la culture de la presse) au tournant des XIX^e et XX^e siècles.

Le XIX^e siècle face à l'accélération du temps et de l'histoire. L’appel à communications est ouvert à des propositions relevant de la littérature française, de la littérature comparée, de l’histoire, de la philosophie, de l’histoire des arts et de la musicologie. Dans un souci d’analyse globale des phénomènes, on privilégiera des approches transversales, plutôt que des études monographiques.

  The international network Humanities for Change, in accordance with the interdisciplinary spirit and the contaminatory approach that characterize its activities, intends to organize a day of study on the theme of public humanities. The meeting aims to stimulate some reflections coming from different fields of knowledge and to encourage the dialogue between researchers on the possibilities of the humanities to escape from academic circles. In this sense, the main object of study is the analysis of methodologies and tools related to knowledge dissemination practices for historical, artistic and philological-literary disciplines. Particular attention will also be given to new professional figures connected to the degree courses of the humanities faculties (such as the 'public historian') and to the interactions of these professional figures with the new media of communication and mass dissemination.

  Novels of childhood, 1922

  Les bouleversements propres à la première guerre mondiale se traduisent, au début des années 1920, par une série de ruptures qui affectent les structures sociale et familiale, les relations entre les générations comme les rapports au sein du couple. Les « Années folles » correspondent aussi à une période de fractures et de renouveaux artistiques. Le monde hérité des parents est récusé par une jeunesse qui « découvre les défaillances de ceux qui sont censés lui transmettre les notions du Bien et du Mal » (Tonnet-Lacroix, 1991). La figure de l’enfant prodigue - que l’on songe à Jacques Thibault dans Les Thibault de Roger Martin du Gard -, et le culte de la jeunesse nourrissent l’inspiration de plusieurs romanciers (Lucien Fabre et son héros Rabevel) au même titre que « [l’] éloge de l’invention et de l’aventure, [la] haine de la tyrannie familiale, [la] satire des conformismes sociaux » (Ibid.).

  The Myth of Versailles and European Courts, 18th and 19th centuries

  This symposium is organised in conjunction with the research programme “Court identities and the myth of Versailles in Europe: perception, adherence and rejection (18th-19th centuries)” led by the Centre de recherche du château de Versailles. The aim is to analyse the modus operandi of the myth of Versailles in the monarchic Europe of the 18^th, 19^th and 20^th centuries, taking into account the two contradictory yet complementary elements that characterise the idea of myth: the real and the reconstruction of the real. The focus of this conference will therefore be twofold: understanding how the different aspects specific to the identity of Versailles have fuelled an illusion, but also discerning how this illusion gave rise to other accomplishments, whether architectural, ritual or political.

  Full-time, 36-month-long international PhD contract at Sorbonne University (PhD program IV) within the research centre Eur'ORBEM and in partnership with the French Research Centre in Social Sciences (CEFRES) in Prague, from 1 October 2020, under the supervision of Clara Royer. The PhD thesis may be written in French or in English. PhD propositions should focus on the discourses and practices surrounding the orphan condition in literature and/or visual arts (cinema, photography, graphic arts and so forth) in the wake of the violence and demographic upheavals that characterized 20^th century East-Central Europe.   In this publication we would like to explore the relation between the post-1918 crisis of the liberal system and the use of art and image as political media including its nationalist, gender and class discourses since they reflect the political and economic transformations of the post-war years. Art and cinema allow us to observe processes such as accelerated urbanisation, electrification and the automobile revolution, the incorporation of women into the waged- labour market or class struggles, all of which fed the insecurity and anxiety of industrialised societies which sought shelter in growing protectionism and corporatism.

  Trades from the past in western Europe

  From the workshop to the factory (1830s-1930s)

  Commencée au XVIII^e siècle en Angleterre, la Révolution industrielle gagne la Belgique puis la France avant d’atteindre les espaces germaniques mais aussi les contrées septentrionales de l’Espagne et de l’Italie au cours du XIX^e siècle. D’une manière de plus en plus active se développe un artisanat qui, au fil du temps et par des mutations techniques, s’industrialise largement. S’opère alors une mutation de bien des métiers au point que certains disparaissent ou se trouvent profondément bouleversés alors qu’éclate la deuxième guerre mondiale. Le présent appel à communications est lancé afin de mieux cerner ces transformations en choississant des exemples locaux ou régionaux de ces métiers, des années 1830 aux années 1930, métiers artisanaux mais aussi métiers manuels au cœur d’industries, légères ou lourdes, qui connurent de profondes évolutions avec le temps.
