Guerre, americanismo e antiamericanismo dal XX secolo all’attualità

    Diacronie. Studi di storia contemporanea

Since its entry into World War 1 in 1917, the United States has played a pivotal international role across political, economic, cultural, and military arenas. This trajectory has been characterized by waves of both Americanization and anti-Americanism, with military interventions increasingly assuming a central role—albeit with notable distinctions. The United States has been consistently engaged in overseas operations. This call for papers seeks to explore the complex relationship between wars, Americanism, and anti-Americanism from the 20th century to the present.

The Lives and Afterlives of Cookie Mueller: Tales, Kinships, Persistence

Special issue of “ANGLES – new perspectives on the anglophone world” (april 2027)

Cookie Mueller (1949-1989) is probably best known for her small parts in Waters’ early movies (Multiple Maniacs, 1970; Pink Flamingos, 1972; Female Trouble, 1974; Desperate Living, 1977) and for befriending many artists, including Nan Goldin, Robert Mapplethorpe, and Jean-Michel Basquiat. She was, however, also a gifted writer, who wrote health columns for the East Village Eye, a memoir, a theater play, as well as a series of nonsensical portraits/short stories entitled How to Get Rid of Pimples (1984). Cookie Mueller was one of the many victims of the AIDS epidemic. We invite contributors to explore Cookie Mueller’s writing ; the networks, artistic and emotional, in which she was embedded ; the experiences of loss and mourning in the context of the AIDS crisis.

Religion and immigration in the United States and Canada: A Bottom-Up Perspective

In recent years, there has been an upsurge of interest in the religious beliefs and practices of immigrant populations in both popular and academic discourse. While this topic is most often addressed as part of larger conversations about multiculturalism and social cohesion within the broader society, scholars are increasingly turning their attention to religious identities as experienced by the immigrants themselves. This conference will take a “bottom up” approach to explore how religion has factored into the migrant trajectories, lived experience, and imaginaries of newcomers to the United States and Canada from the nineteenth century through to the present day.

Extreme right and democracy in Europe after the Second World War

    Coexistences, contrasts, contradictions

It seems urgent to reflect on how democracies have responded to the presence of extreme right-wing movements, both in terms of political practices and rhetoric. Have democracies actively opposed the extreme right, or have they opted for strategies of containment and coexistence? Equally important is to examine the perspective of the extreme right: how has it interpreted and narrated the (supposed) coexistence with the democratic system? How has it dealt with the legacy of fascism and to what extent has it adapted to the culture of democracy?

Reproductive Justice and Its Discontents: Recent Representations in American Popular Culture

    “RSAJournal”, 36 (September 2025)

RSAJournal, the journal of the Italian Association of American Studies (AISNA) seeks contributions for its n. 36 issue (September 2025) for both its General and Special Sections. Reproductive justice—defined as the right to have children, to not have children, and to parent—has always confronted praxes of power and control, which include the regulation of many issues such as expected gender roles, sexual behavior, abortion, family formation, adoption, reproductive assistive technology, and surrogacy. We invite contributions from different disciplines considering how popular culture shapes our attitudes about reproductive justice.

Communication, Information, Politics and Culture in the U.S.

Médiamerica is a seminar on American news media organized by researchers working in France. Its aim is to cultivate research on the links between communication, politics, culture, and the processes by which information is produced, circulated, and given form, focusing on the North American context. Médiamerica brings together researchers with varied backgrounds to explore these issues from both historical and contemporary perspectives. The seminar offers a space for scholarly reflection and debate, to consider emergent phenomena in news and communication, as well as the ways in which the academic community on both sides of the Atlantic conceptualize such phenomena. This initiative seeks to build bridges between anglophone studies and communication studies, encouraging dialogue between different methodological approaches and benefiting from an intercultural perspective.

Herrmann/Horner: two Hollywood giants in the service of the emotional?

This international symposium pays tribute to two Hollywood giants, Bernard Herrmann (1911-1975), who died on December 24, 1975 during post-production of Martin Scorcese's Taxi Driver, and James Horner (1953-2015), who was accidentally killed on June 22, 2015 while piloting one of his jets. This singular way of arousing visceral emotion or probing affects offers a possible convergence between these two Hollywood giants. Following the example of the emotional register, we could examine the various aspects of Bernard Herrmann's work that have received little attention, or focus in depth on the constituent elements of James Horner's style. These are just a few of the avenues open to us, but as this is first and foremost a tribute, the paths to be taken are multiple, depending on what the participants wish to highlight.

Bodies in Action Films and TV Series in the Digital Era

The idea for this conference arose from the renewed attention paid to the profilmic body in US-American audiovisual action productions since the mid-2010s, at a time when the transition to all-digital production favored the hegemony of other adventure genres centered on the prowess of virtual bodies. In the 1990s, action movies were largely characterized by the centrality of the physical body in motion, confronted with extraordinary constraints, and carried out by actors who performed the majority of their own stunts.
