  Financé par le labex ICCA en partenariat avec le CESSP et le Labsic, ce groupe de recherche est articulé autour d’un séminaire annuel et de manifestations scientifiques régulières. Il s’agit de favoriser la création d’un réseau international de chercheurs et de professionnels pour initier, développer et diffuser des travaux sur les productions culturelles et médiatiques (cinéma, informations, livres, programmes télévisés, musiques, etc.) dans les pays du Moyen-Orient et en Afrique du Nord. Son objectif est de saisir leurs enjeux sociaux, économiques, politiques, religieux et culturels en se focalisant sur les spécificités des espaces nationaux et les processus de circulation des productions et des pratiques.

  Actors and Vehicles of Architectural Criticism

  Architectural Criticism 20th and 21st Centuries, a Cartography

  This second international workshop takes into consideration the actors and the vehicles of criticism: with these terms it refers to both the agents of criticism (critics, architects, historians, publishers, photographers, institutions, etc.) and the media through which criticism is disseminated (press, photography, exhibitions, etc.). The workshop aims to expand the knowledge about the specific functions of these actors and their networks and to outline their mutual relationships. The four sessions investigate the links between the actors, the media of criticism, and the historical contexts within which they materialize, as well as the cultural, intellectual, and institutional milieus from which they originate.

  Cities in darkness

  Envisager « la ville dans le noir » c’est questionner l’impact de l’obscurité, subie ou recherchée dans les pratiques économiques, sociales, voire politiques des citadins. Dans des villes sous contrainte énergétique, la vie nocturne en constitue une dimension essentielle. Elle permet d’aborder une variété de paysages physiques et d’expériences urbaines ; elle met en évidence en particulier les failles des réseaux d’éclairage public, les contraintes subies ainsi que les opportunités d’activités dissimulées. Mais les pratiques de l’obscurité vont au-delà de ces ambiances nocturnes qui marquent la diversité de nos terrains de recherche. La journée d’étude envisage alors des zones d’ombre et des pénombres plus diffuses ; elle interroge en cela les frontières temporelles entre le jour et la nuit.

  The individual and his body in the Ancient Mediterranean basin

  Le corps d’un individu relie celui-ci aux autres membres de sa communauté, il constitue un support physique commode pour interagir avec eux. Sans corps, pas de sens ; sans sens, pas de communication possible. Toutefois, le corps sépare aussi l’individu de ses contemporains : par ses particularismes innés ou acquis, il le différencie des autres. Il est donc à la fois un facteur de cohésion et de discrimination sociale. Cette problématique, très explorée en anthropologie sociale, a été presque complètement ignorée dans les études sur le Proche-Orient cunéiforme. En hittitologie, seule la lexicographie des parties du corps humain a été étudiée jusqu’à présent.

  Ships of the desert

  The presence and uses of the camel (Camelus dromedarius) between the Tigris and the Nile in the middle 1st millenium

  Le dromadaire ou chameau à une bosse (Camelus dromedarius) n’est pas une espèce autochtone en Égypte, ni même au Proche-Orient ou dans la péninsule Arabique. L’animal, surnommé « vaisseau des déserts », est pourtant particulièrement bien adapté aux environnements arides et semi-arides de ces régions. Il a des utilisations multiples (transport de charge, transport de personnes, labour, course, consommation humaine etc.), mais son élevage est délicat et requiert un savoir-faire précis. Il a donc semblé opportun de réunir pour la première fois des philologues, des archéologues et des archéozoologues, spécialistes de leur discipline, pour confronter les informations et tenter de mieux cerner l’histoire du Camelus dromedarius, de son élevage et de ses utilisations dans les déserts d’Égypte, du Proche-Orient et de la péninsule Arabique, du milieu du I^er millénaire av. J.-C. à l’époque romaine.

  Irrationality in the Middle East and Islām

  Atelier thématique – IIe congrès du GIS « Moyen-Orient et Mondes musulmans »

  If rationality denotes what complies with the mind, irrationality, by contrast, deals with all that, at first sight, can't be explained and controlled by the ʿaql. In other words, irrationality is a negatively defined notion marked by lack or loss (ʿadam-, ġayr-ou lā-ʿaql), distance (ibʿād)or deviation (inḥirāf) from the intellect, or even it is the result of reduced rationality (qillat al-ʿaql). An irrational behaviour is considered rather strange, abnormal, and sometimes contrary to sound norms and moral principals. Consequently, this is the case of liminal states or of more or less voluntary marginal conducts: the insane and the mental ill, the drunk or the intoxicated, the silly, the foolish, the madly in love with beloved or with God, etc.

  Women and social and politica changes in Arab countries

  Les mouvements sociaux qui ont secoué les pays arabes, depuis 2011, n’ont cessé d’interpeler les chercheurs sur les enjeux et les perspectives liés aux changements survenus sur les plans politique et social. Leur impact, sur les rapports sociaux de genre et les représentations qui les sous-tendent, mérite d’être analysé. En effet, les femmes des pays arabes sont particulièrement touchées par ces changements et cela est visible à travers leur présence active dans les mouvements sociaux. Elles jouent un rôle relativement important comme vectrices de modernisation dans la société. Le renversement de certains régimes n’aurait pas été possible sans l’insurrection des masses urbaines et dont la mobilisation des femmes a été un facteur important. Défiant certains tabous et stéréotypes, elles se sont imposées comme actrices des « révolutions arabes », non seulement en prenant part à la contestation, mais et en la nourrissant.

  This conference aims to provide opportunities for PhD/Post Doctoral fellows working on Asia in areas of History, Political Science, International Relations, Economics, Anthropology and Sociology, to present their research and to improve their theoretical but especially methodological approaches. The broad objectives of the conference will be to foster collaboration and the creation of trans-disciplinary research projects on Asia, while discussing common issues that transcends our areas of study: the necessity and possibility of articulating disciplinary knowledge and area studies, as well as the necessity and possibility of applying theories (often of predominantly Western origins) to a local context (Non Western).
