  Excess? Images of body, health, morality and emotions across the media

  A central goal of the workshop is to open up an international exchange and to connect perspectives from the history of science, the history of emotions, the history of the body and media history in order to shed new light on a history of health as a cultural history. The event is part of the research project “The Healthy Self as Body Capital: Individuals, Market-Based Societies, and Body Politics in Visual Twentieth Century Europe” funded by the European Research Council under the European Union's Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme (Advanced Grant agreement No 694817) led by Christian Bonah (University of Strasbourg) and Anja Laukötter (Max Planck Institute for Human Development, Berlin).

  The question of the relationship between enlightenment and revolution in the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries is a very old one. Since 2000, the study of both the age of enlightenment and the age of revolution have been renewed by simultaneous turns towards more transnational perspectives—often described as “Atlantic.” Yet relatively little attention has been paid to connecting these Atlantic visions of the enlightenment with new understandings of the Atlantic age of revolution, or to the related problem of integrating these Atlantic approaches with revolutionary historiographies that remain stubbornly national in orientation.

  This meeting aims to foster a discussion about the continuities and disruptions which have conditioned the multi-ethnic dimension of our cities. We would like to focus on the specificities of places and time in our millennial history that have produced both tangible and intangible cultural heritage (a heritage which today seems strongly under attack). We aim for a historical perspective –  by drawing attention on well-documented case-studies offering comparative insights – without however forgetting to ask ourselves the meaning of our research in the troubled world we live in; without anachronisms, but also without hiding behind the pretext of specialisms, while in front of our eyes the Mediterranean world is more than ever a theatre of death, exclusion, suffering.

  The project Arts, ecologies, transitions. Building a common reference wishes to accompany certain notable developments in the field of the arts as well as theoretical discourse on art and which, rejecting the confinement of art to the realm of ‘civilizational oversupply’, are attentive to questions arising from current ecological, economic and social crises as well as the crisis of representation we also currently experiencing. As part of this project, a call for papers is hereby launched for two symposia entitled Encounters: Arts, Ecologies, Transitions. These symposia will focus on current proposals dealing with radical positionings of the artistic ‘transition’, in which the ecological shift is generating new artistic forms, practices and works.

  African Ivories

  In the Atlantic World, 1400-1900

  Since April 2015, the international team working on the project “African Ivories in the Atlantic World: a reassessment of Luso-African ivories” (Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia: PTDC/EPH-PAT/1810/2014), composed of 27 researchers from the University of Lisbon, the University of Évora and the Federal University of Minas Gerais in Brazil, has been researching the trade, circulation and production of raw and carved African ivory in the Atlantic area from the fifteenth to the eighteenth century. The team has identified and listed objects from Portuguese and Brazilian (Minas Gerais) collections, also collecting references and descriptions extant in written Portuguese sources. For the first time a selection of ivory pieces was subjected to lab tests with a view to helping establish their age and origin. The project research team has submitted proposals for re-interpreting material culture in the framework of its African contexts of production.

  Cet appel à contribution s'inscrit dans le cadre de la réalisation d'un ouvrage collectif en préparation intitulé Parler avec les animaux. L’ouvrage vise à offrir un tour d’horizon des travaux contemporains les plus stimulants autour de la question du rapport entre l’animalité et le langage. Nous cherchons à représenter une diversité d’approches, et souhaitons encourager les contributrices et contributeurs à mobiliser des approches exploratoires et audacieuses à la question, tant au plan du contenu que de la forme. L’ouvrage en préparation fera l’objet d’une publication conjointe aux Presses de l’université de Montréal et aux Presses universitaires de Paris Nanterre.

  War as Contact Zone in the Nineteenth Century

  The workshop seeks to encourage further debate on the mechanics of encounter and transfer processes in war during the "long nineteenth century" (1789-1914). It wiil also explore how historians working on this subject can use new digital methods and impact case studies to make their findings accessible to the public. The choice of period is informed by this era’s manifold innovations in such fields as communication, mass transport, weaponry, international law and the conduct of war, which have generated fruitful dialogue on the question whether the nineteenth century set the path for a totalitarianisation of warfare or should instead be evaluated on their own terms.

  The desertification of art - 2018 conference of the Société française d'esthétique

  Congrès 2018 de la Société française d'esthétique

  Formulé pour la première fois en 1953 dans un article consacré au jazz publié dans la revue Merkur, le concept d’Entkunstung(désartification) marque la pensée tardive d’Adorno qui s’exprime dans sa Théorie esthétique. Ce néologisme désigne chez lui l’idée que l’art, au cours du XX^esiècle, a été progressivement « privé de son caractère artistique » (Kunst wird entkunstet). Pour Adorno, cette désartification résulte du développement de ce qu’il nomme l’industrie culturelle. Productrice de divertissements faciles, d’expériences pauvres (compréhension aisée de significations simples, effets dramatiques faciles, émotions stéréotypées), celle-ci est aux antipodes des exigences du grand art qui ennoblit. L’industrie culturelle produit un succédané de culture, très proche de ce que Clément Greenberg, à la même époque, désigne par le terme de Kitsch (Avant-garde et Kitsch).
