The Western Mediterranean in the 5th century. The great upheaval?
The 5th century is unequivocally identified as a key moment in the history of the Western Mediterranean, marked in particular by the establishment of the Barbarian kingdoms, the end of the Roman Empire in the West and a new phase of Christianity's expansion. These are all major, if not fundamental, upheavals that have profoundly and lastingly influenced the evolution of this geographical area. Currently data available make it very difficult to form a satisfactory global vision of this century because they are so heterogeneous, dispersed and often diluted in diachronic approaches. From this observation emerges the need to gather, cross-reference and compare the extremely abundant information in order to measure the transformations and the space they affect during the 5th century. An international symposium is undoubtedly the most appropriate tool to approach this issue, given the multiplicity of research teams working in this field and the scope of the geographical framework concerned.

Exile in the Middle Ages: from Torment to Plenitude
The colloquium aims to delineate the multifaceted aspects of the concept of exile in the Middle Ages - real or metaphorical exile - through the prisms of law, history, literature, and linguistics. This colloquium will offer a preliminary paradigmatic approach to a relatively unexplored territory, at least in the sphere of medieval studies. Various lines of research are therefore possible. Proposals in the following areas (and/or in interdisciplinary perspectives) are welcome: English and French literature, comparative literature, narratology, linguistics, translation, cultural studies, history, religion, and philosophy. The proposed papers may be of a theoretical, descriptive or empirical nature (essays, syntheses, case studies, comparative studies).

Living with seismic phenomena in the ancient Mediterranean - myths, history and archaeology

L’espace méditerranéen est caractérisé par une forte activité sismique. Sans avoir les connaissances scientifiques dont nous disposons aujourd’hui, les auteurs anciens nous renseignent sur les catastrophes naturelles en fournissant des tentatives d’explication diverses selon les époques et les régions : pour certains les responsables sont les dieux (comme le Poseidon Ennosigaios et Ennosichthon grec ou le Neptune latin) et les tremblements de terre sont des prodiges à interpréter pour changer l’avenir ; mais d’autres auteurs tels Aristote ou Sénèque fournissent d’autres explications, conformément aux théories de la philosophie naturelle. Afin d’analyser les relations entre sociétés humaines, territoires et perceptions des risques de l’antiquité au Moyen Âge, deux colloques sont organisés autour de la problématique générale des caractéristiques récurrentes de la résilience aux catastrophes.

La ville à l'époque romane (XIe-début XIIIe siècle). Matérialité, Images, imaginaire ». L'appel s'adresse aux historiens de l'Art, historiens, archéologues, littéraires, linguistes médiévistes et s'ouvre également aux étudiants de master 2 et aux doctorants.

The last decades have witnessed the development of studies on material culture, favouring an inter- and multidisciplinary approach. This has enabled a more cohesive reading of the way in which the medieval Man related to his material environment, manipulating, adapting and transforming it, of the uses given to the objects he produced, the meanings attributed, how he interacted with them in cognitive and affective terms.

On 13, 14 and 15 November 2019, the II International Congress of Young Researchers in Middle Ages (ICYRMA) will take place at the University of Évora, Portugal. ICYRMA is destinated to students at master, doctoral and postdoctoral level and/or to those who have obtained their academic degrees in the last five years. It aims to be an interdisciplinary space for dissemination, discussion and contact among young researchers who study the Middle Ages from various perspectives: history, archeology, art history, literature, philosophy, philology, anthropology, ethnology, sociology, geography, methodology, among other areas.

Medieval culture and war conference
It is an undeniable fact of human history that war has been on many occasions and in many different historical contexts a powerful stimulus for innovations and change in culture, politicals, and thought. During periods of transition warfare had a crucial role in medieval societies. Following previous meetings in Leeds (2016), Lisbon (2017) and Brussels (2018) the 2019 Medieval Culture and War Conference will be held in Athens in the Faculty of History and Archaeology of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA). The conference will focus on ‘Transformation, Renovation, and Continuity’.

Typographical characters of the 15th century - between gothic and Roman
Le colloque et l'exposition Gotico-Antiqua, Proto-Romain, Hybride. Caractères du XVe siècle entre gothique et romain, les 25 et 26 mai à l'école nationale supérieure d'art et de design de Nancy, sont fondés sur un programme de recherche en cours à l’Atelier national de recherche typographique (ANRT) qui examine la période historique de 1459-1482. Le colloque a pour objectif de réunir des chercheurs dans le domaine de la typographie, de la paléographie et de l’histoire du livre, en mettant l’accent sur les caractères et les formes de lettres. Cette période relativement peu étudiée - après Gutenberg et avant la stabilisation du modèle de Jenson - s’étend des premières traces de tendances humanistiques aux romains ‹purs›, en passant par de nombreux cas de dessins incertains, hybridations volontaires et formes proto- ou archaïques du romain.

Re-thinking the Aristocracy in Capetian France, 987-1328
L’aristocratie a longtemps été la pierre angulaire de nombreuses études de la médiévistique française. Les sessions tenues en 2018 à l’International Medieval Congress de Leeds et à la conférence internationale de la Haskins Society ont présenté des recherches sur l’aristocratie française dans la longue durée du royaume capétien, en mettant l’accent sur une analyse nuancée et totale, en contraste avec des discours plus anciens, fragmentées ou simplistes.

La localisation de Nantes en limite du royaume franc, en bord de Loire et ouverte sur l’océan, en fait le lieu idéal pour s’interroger sur la circulation des hommes, des biens et des idées dans des limites qui pourront éventuellement déborder du monde mérovingien. Les moyens de communication, les échanges, le commerce, les influences ou encore les transferts technologiques et culturels feront ainsi l’objet d’une approche multiscalaire permettant d’appréhender la question à l’échelle locale ou régionale (au sein des campagnes, dans l’espace urbain, relations villes/campagne, contextes littoraux ou intérieurs…) mais aussi sur de plus longues distances et par-delà les mers.

Étudiant terrible et maître illustre, amant légendaire et logicien virtuose, moine instable et abbé réformateur, poète de génie et philosophe précurseur, théologien prestigieux et deux fois condamné pour hérésie, auteur entre autres de commentaires sur Porphyre et sur la Bible, de traités sur la dialectique et sur la Trinité, de poèmes amoureux et liturgiques, et encore – dans le même dossier – d’une autobiographie controversée, d’une correspondance passionnée et d’une règle religieuse, Pierre Abélard n’est pas seulement une des figures les plus célèbres de tout le Moyen Âge, il en est aussi, comme homme, comme écrivain et comme penseur, une des plus riches, des plus complexes et des plus insaisissables.

Symbolic and Material Changes to Cult Images in the Classical and Medieval Ages
Iconotropy is a Greek word which literally means “image turning.” William J. Hamblin (2007) defines the term as “the accidental or deliberate misinterpretation by one culture of the images or myths of another one, especially so as to bring them into accord with those of the first culture.” In fact, iconotropy is commonly the result of the way cultures have dealt with images from foreign or earlier cultures. Numerous accounts from classical antiquity and the Middle Ages detail how cult images were involved in such processes of misinterpretation, both symbolically and materially. Pagan cultures for example deliberately misrepresented ancient ritual icons and incorporated new meanings to the mythical substratum, thus modifying the myth’s original meanings and bringing about a profound change to existing religious paradigms. Iconotropy is a fundamental concept in religious history, particularly of contexts in which religious changes, often turbulent, took place. At the same time, the iconotropic process of appropriating cult images brought with it changes in the materiality of those images...The conference hopes to generate new research questions and creative synergies by initiating conversation and the exchange of ideas among scholars in the arts and humanities.

Coins and currency in the 10th and 11th centuries
Issuing authorities, political powers, economic influences
The 10th-11th centuries were crucial for the history of France. The centralized Carolingian state gave way to the regional principalities. Why this happened and how it affected society are core questions for historical research. The study of coins has a huge potential to contribute to this debate. Contrary to written documents, they survive in thousands. Contrary to other archaeological artefacts, coins are struck by official decision, reflecting the “state”. They are more closely datable them most other artefacts. Coins also circulate widely in many spheres of society, reflecting trade and economics.The conference Coins and currency in the 10th and 11th centuries takes advantage of this leap forward to reopen the debate. The aim of the conference is to bring numismatists, archaeologists and historians together in order to confront their ideas for the mutual benefit of historical knowledge.

Cet appel à communications est dédié à un atelier de jeunes chercheurs dont l'objectif sera de faire un état des lieux de la recherche concernant la question de la réforme grégorienne, de sa définition et de la compréhension de ses enjeux, dans les espaces francophones et germanophones, dans une démarche non seulement comparatiste, mais aussi transdisciplinaire, puisqu'il s'agira d'interroger l'état de la question aussi bien en histoire politique qu'en histoire du droit, en histoire de l'art qu'en théologie, par exemple. Cet atelier de jeunes chercheurs est organisé par Tristan Martine (université Jean Moulin Lyon 3, CIHAM-UMR 5648) et Jérémy Winandy (universität Hamburg).

Clerical and monastic communities in the Carolingian World (8th-10th)
The Carolingian era has seen by many as a time when the Church became increasingly institutionalised. One of the main aspects of this development, exemplified by the series of councils held between 816 and 819, was a (re)definition of the canonical and monastic orders and the requirement for each community in the realm to comply either with the institutiones canonicorum and sanctimonialium or with the Rule of Benedict. Despite the influential works of J. Semmler or R. Schieffer, however, the real impact of these proposed reforms is still an open question, and from this perspective, the very notion of institutionalisation can also be questioned.
