Open Theology invites submissions for the topical issue “Women and Gender in the Bible and the Biblical World II”, edited by Zanne Domoney-Lyttle and Sarah Nicholson. This special issue aims to explore, interrogate and reflect on the ways in which women are understood, contextualised and represented in the text of the Bible that has developed, in various ways, a foundational significance for Western culture.

Qui nomme les dieux ? Énonciateurs, destinateurs, agents rituels
Le séminaire ERC MAP « Noms de dieux ! 5 : Qui nomme les dieux ? Énonciateurs, destinateurs, agents rituels » poursuit l’enquête sur les systèmes de dénomination du divin. Cette année, il interroge plus particulièrement les agents humains dans les processus de dénomination du divin, qu’ils soient producteurs d’un discours sur les divinités, destinateurs dans une communication avec les divinités, voire experts en charge d’un savoir rituel. Quelle agentivité exercent hommes et femmes dans la production d’une dénomination spécifique du divin ? Comment interroger leurs choix, leur ancrage dans une tradition ou leurs stratégies d’innovation ?

The junior researchers and PhD students from the Anthropology of the ancient world curriculum of the PhD course in Classics and Archeology are promoting the fourth edition of the seminar cycle Classicamente. Dialoghi Senesi sul Mondo Antico. This year's edition will focus on the varied methodologies and hermeneutical perspectives which represent the scientific guidelines followed by scholars in anthropology of the ancient world ever since its development. It will also focus on those approaches that today contribute to a constant enrichment and renovation of this field of study. Our goal is to offer to all those who take part the chance to present their work, be it the result of long research or elements of a work in progress, in an enviroment open to discussion between different perspectives (anthropological, philological, historical, archeological, semiotic etc.).

Une table ronde internationale organisée les 4 et 5 mai 2019 à l’université de Salahaddin (Erbil, Irak) a mis en évidence l’intérêt d’un ouvrage collectif sur la question du christianisme en Irak au tournant de l’islam. Les Presses de l’Ifpo lancent donc un appel à contribution sur ce thème.

Regards croisés sur l’initiation chrétienne entre Antiquité tardive et Moyen Âge
Lors de cette rencontre dédiée au baptême et aux baptistères, nous espérons mettre en lumière la spatialisation des rituels baptismaux et leur évolution depuis l’Antiquité tardive et le Moyen Âge, en comparant les différentes régions de l’ancien monde romain et de ses voisins. En confrontant textes et archéologie, nous souhaitons poser la question de savoir si les pratiques baptismales sont le moment d’affirmation d’identités chrétiennes régionales ou confessionnelles.

Cult Epithets as an Inteface between Religious Systems and Human Agency), coordonné par Corinne Bonnet, un poste contractuel de post-doctorant·e à temps plein (100 %) est à pourvoir, à dater du 1er mars 2021 à l'université Toulouse – Jean Jaurès. L'appel à candidatures s'adresse, en particulier, aux chercheuses et chercheurs en histoire des religions de l'Antiquité, ayant une excellente connaissance du grec ancien et une familiarité avec les corpus épigraphiques.

Le séminaire ERC MAP « Noms de dieux ! » 4 : Explorer les potentialités du nom : mises en images, mises en récits poursuit l’enquête sur les systèmes de dénomination du divin. En gravitant autour des noms, des images et des récits, on partira à la recherche de correspondances mais aussi d’écarts, afin de souligner, au départ de cas ou de dossiers dûment choisis, les spécificités des différents langages mobilisés pour déployer les potentialités des noms divins. Dans l’esprit du projet MAP, on prêtera une attention particulière aux relations que traduisent les noms, les images et les récits.

Ancient religion in rural settlements
XVIII International ARYS Conference
This conference aims to deconstruct the ideas of rural religion as mechanically reproducing urban rituals and religious hierarchies and of the rural world as a space of cultural and religious resilience against urbanity. Rural areas represented an arena for very situational processes of negotiation between, on the one hand, administrative patterns and related social configurations, and, on the other hand, processes of social conformance to the very characteristics of a local specific rural environment, of adaptation to its peculiar habitus and religious customs, possibly involving gods whose competences directly mirrored a geophysical environment made of mountains, rivers, woods, etc.

Strategies of Human-Divine Communication in the Roman Empire from Individual Experience to Social Reproduction
The Department of Historical Science at the University of Málaga and the Institute of Historiography “Julio Caro Baroja” at the University of Carlos III of Madrid are organizing an international conference titled “Calling upon gods, offering bodies. Strategies of human-divine communication in the Roman Empire from individual experience to social reproduction”. Researchers of Ancient History, History of Religion, Archaeology, Anthropology, Classics, and other related fields are invited to present their research on this topic. The conference aims at analysing how self-experience of religious communication becomes a reflexive phenomenon reproduced in time and space to constitute a collectively shared narrative.

Organisé par le projet ERC Advanced Grant “Mapping Ancient Polytheisms. Cult Epithets as an Interface between Religious Systems and Human Agency” (MAP - 741182), le colloque Naming and Mapping the gods in the Ancient Mediterranean. Spaces, Mobilities, Imaginaries souhaite réunir les compétences et les spécialités de multiples disciplines – archéologie, histoire, géographie, anthropologie, histoire des religions, philologie, réception, social network analysis – afin d’envisager à nouveaux frais le corpus documentaire concerné par l’intersection entre le divin et l’espace. Le colloque ambitionne notamment de proposer un angle d’approche innovant : l’intersection entre les espaces et les désignations des dieux.

Projet ERC « Mapping Ancient Polytheisms » – contrat doctoral
Le projet ERC Advanced Grant « Mapping Ancient Polytheisms. Cult Epithets as an Interface between Religious Systems and Human Agency » (MAP – 741182) propose un contrat doctoral dans le domaine de l’histoire des religions anciennes. Le projet de thèse reposera sur l’étude d’un corpus substantiel d’inscriptions provenant des colonies grecques fondées au Proche-Orient, dans une aire comprise entre la Syrie et l’Indus. Le poste sera pourvu pour le 1er octobre 2019 et pour une période de 36 mois à Toulouse (France).

3 : Textes, images et contextes d'usages (janvier-juin 2019)
Le séminaire ERC MAP "Noms de dieux !" 3 : "Textes, images et contextes d'usages" poursuit l’enquête sur les systèmes de dénomination du divin en privilégiant deux axes de réflexion : les contextes d’énonciation et la mise en image des « attributs onomastiques divins ». Si la programmation des séances se concentre sur les mondes grec et ouest-sémitique (au sens large), elle propose aussi bien des études de cas que des propositions théoriques. Seront ainsi présentés des dossiers abordant notamment les questions liées aux stratégies de traduction, aux noms propres, à la pluralité du divin, aux interactions entre noms et images, dans des contextes d’usage variés : dédicaces, imprécations, serments, hymnes et autres formes d’adresse.

Les particularités de l'image égyptienne
Troisième journée d'études égyptologiques consacrée à la lecture de l'image
Après avoir étudié la relation entre image et écriture puis les dénominations et modes de représentation, nous nous pencherons cette année sur les particularités de l'image égyptienne. De nombreuses représentations ainsi que leurs éléments constitutifs – scènes, personnages, animaux, objets, etc. – ne sont en effet pas reproduits selon les conventions qui régissent habituellement l'art égyptien. L'objectif de cette journée est non seulement d'apprendre à repérer ces particularités et à les définir mais aussi et surtout de comprendre leurs fonctions au sein du vocabulaire iconographique égyptien.

Noms de dieux ! Les dieux aux frontières
L’objectif du séminaire est de poursuivre notre réflexion collective sur les noms des dieux et les stratégies de dénominations dans la fabrique du divin, en considérant des dossiers qui sont aux frontières – géographiques etchronologiques – de notre projet, en particulier : les textes ougaritiques, les mondes hittites et mésopotamiens, ainsi que l’Iran (achéménide), la Gaule, Rome et l’Arabie pré-islamique.

Coloquio - Prehistoria y Antigüedad
Les « mystères » au IIe siècle de notre ère : un « mysteric turn » ?
Cette rencontre conclut près de quatre années de recherche sur « Les “cultes à mystères” (mystêria, teletai, orgia, etc.) et leurs acteurs spécialisés ». Elle s’appuie théoriquement et méthodologiquement sur un ensemble de dossiers (historiographie, lexique textuel et visuel, données rituelles) qui ont déjà fait l’objet d’analyses lors de rencontres précédentes. Les conclusions de ces études invitent à resserrer l’enquête sur l’hypothèse d’un « tournant mystérique » au IIe siècle de notre ère, c’est-à-dire d’un changement de paradigme non seulement dans les discours sur les mystères et leur représentation, mais aussi dans les rituels désormais ainsi qualifiés (mystikos et mystêriôdês par exemple).

Dressing Divinely: clothed or naked deities an devotees
The XVII International Colloquium of the Association ARYS (Antiquity, Religions and Societies) is dedicated to the study of the links between religious identity and clothing within the framework of ancient societies and religions, from the perspective of the images either of the gods or of their devotees. Within the topic of religious clothing will be included the religious use of clothes and attributes, accesories, ornaments, body modifications such as mutilations or tattoos, hairstyles, nudity and, of course, the action itself of dressing or undressing, its conception and positive, neutral or negative consideration, or the act of assuming any of those human or divine complements, adornments, attributes or modifications of the body. We welcome the participation of consolidated as well as early-career specialists in the field of ancient history, archaeology, religious sciences, art history and historiography of religions.

Organologie - perceptions - polyvalence
Longtemps parents pauvres de la recherche sur la musique antique et très souvent relégués à la fin des catalogues d’instruments de musique, les instruments à percussion connaissent depuis quelques années un regain d’intérêt de la part du monde scientifique. Les études les plus récentes ont pourtant montré la complexité des usages de ces artefacts qui, au-delà de leur seul mécanisme sonore, sont mobilisés dans une variété de contextes (cérémonies, théâtre, domaine funéraire, offrandes votives, etc.) pour des raisons multiples. On s’intéressera plus particulièrement au cas des idiophones, mais également aux membranophones lorsque les données le permettent.
