As a theme, “Northern Relations” encourages delegates to explore the connections between peoples, communities, cultures, and ways of knowing, while also listening to those voices that speak directly to some of the most pressing matters of relation (to the land, to each other) in the North: climate change, governance, social justice, reconciliation, reciprocity, education, and much more. A relation is not only an association and an affiliation, it is also an act of telling or reporting; relations are at the heart of how peoples communicate, organize knowledge, and understand their place in the world.

Contributions of articles for electronic journal Verbum et Lingua
The electronic magazine Verbum et Lingua: Didáctica, lengua y cultura will dedicate its 16th edition (July-December 2020) to the topic of Chican@s studies. Grosso modo, for Ornelas, Ramírez and Padilla (1975), the Chican@s studies have made a great effort to integrate four main constructs: race, class, culture and gender/sexuality. These constructs are present in the work of different artists who express their ideology in order to politicize and lead their community(ies) to change. According to Macias (2018), the Chican@s field of study seeks to make research holistic and multidisciplinary, as well as inclusive, comparative, grounded, up-to-date and critical. At the same time, it seeks to apply the results to social justice, education, as well as to the change of the global Chican@ communities.

Displaying the social history of migrants: content, scenography, public engagement
Donner à voir l’histoire sociale des migrations: contenus, scénographies, médiations
We seek proposals from post-doctoral scholars, recent PhDs, as well as those in the final stages of their dissertations with a background in related fields, in particular migration studies and social history, especially as they intersect with museum studies and/or public history. Participants will discuss, from a theoretical and a practical point of view, the best ways to display, in an exhibition context, the daily experience of past migrations in all their social dimensions.

« Making mars » : la fabrique sensible des traces

L’école de printemps Arts in the Alps 2019 aura lieu du 17 au 22 juin et réunira une communauté dynamique de chercheurs et d’artistes, des sciences humaines et sociales (ou de l’art, de la danse, de la géographie, de l’informatique, de la performance et du son), pour explorer et expérimenter comment le sensoriel devient matériel dans un contexte de recherche basée sur la pratique. Les efforts engagés pour fabriquer des traces invitent à un examen approfondi de la pensée matérielle et incarnée que sous-tend la recherche basée sur la pratique. Au cours de cet événement d’une semaine, notre objectif est de mettre l’accent sur la manière dont les traces matérielles sont créées, à travers et pour la recherche artistique, et peuvent à leur tour être partagées entre les communautés.

Crossing French Metropolises: Exiled Artists and Intellectuals during the 20th century
Following “Arrival Cities: Migrating Artists and New Metropolitan Topographies”, the first conference of the ERC research project Relocating Modernism: Global Metropolises, Modern Art and Exile (METROMOD) held at the LMU Munich in November/December 2018, a workshop will be organized at the German Center for Art History (DFK Paris), on 4 July 2019. Building on common interests of the DFK Paris and METROMOD—such as movements of artists, ideas and productions—this workshop will focus on the temporary exile of artists and intellectuals in French cities throughout the twentieth century, which was marked by (e)migration waves. Located at the crossroads of disciplines such as Art History, Exile Studies, History of Sociology, Architecture and Urban Studies, this topic calls for a transdisciplinary approach.

Part of the ERC research project Relocating Modernism: Global Metropolises, Modern Art and Exile (METROMOD), it addresses metropolitan areas that were settled by migrant artists in the first half of the 20th century.

Les migrations sont structurantes de nos sociétés, qu’elles ont constituées de tout temps et avec constance. Pourtant, une véritable réflexion sur les voies légales d’entrée sur les territoires ne semble pas s’enclencher et se limite au contraire à une politique de durcissement de l’asile, à un discours de plus en plus polarisé et à une gestion urgentiste et sécuritaire des « flux ». Tandis que l’urgence et la complexité de la situation s’imposent, des discours et des images spectaculaires et sensationnalistes qui réduisent la migration à des traversées massives, incontrôlables et tragiques, et engendrent des sentiments d’invasion et d’insécurité.

ReFocus: The Films of Rachid Bouchareb
Rachid Bouchareb was born in Paris in 1953 to Algerian parents and became one of France’s first French filmmakers of North African descent. While his career now spans over thirty years and his diverse films have garnered both mainstream and critical success, including three Oscar nominations, there exists no book-length study (in French or English) on Bouchareb’s body of work. The director’s films are remarkably varied in their themes, formal elements, and narrative settings, from Senegal, England, Vietnam, and Algeria, to France, Belgium, Turkey, and the United States.

Du 22 au 28 octobre 2018 se tiendra, à Marseille, une rencontre autour de tables-rondes, expositions, projections, spectacles. Ce croisement des pratiques, créations et réflexions cherchera à explorer comment imaginer de nouvelles manières de rendre visible les migrations, d’entendre la voix migrante. Face à l’urgence et à la complexité des situations, face à un modèle sociétal qui oscille entre images spectaculaires et mesures restrictives, nous souhaitons en effet nous poser ensemble la question de notre responsabilité : comment sortir du « grand spectacle » politique et médiatique pour penser nos productions de façon à « dire la vérité du mieux possible » (N. Chomsky) ?

Dialectics of Dread and Refuge
Theatre, Performance and Philosophy Working Group (TaPRA Conference)
In A Grammar of the Multitude, Paolo Virno discriminates between the Kantian view of the dialectic of dread and refuge, which is based on a distinction between particular danger and absolute danger (also articulated by Heidegger through the distinction between fear and anguish) and the collapse of this distinction in the post-Fordist world, in which "the dividing line between fear and anguish, between relative dread and absolute dread, is precisely what has failed." (Virno 2004, 32) If post-Fordist institutions rely on a culture of pervasive dread – manifest as fear and anxiety – how do we resist this nearly intangible culture today? Arguably, we are moving beyond the sort of entrenched paralysis Virno speaks of, towards a new sort of political breakthrough, a manner of imagining life not determined by institutional cultures of fear and anxiety. Yet much thinking needs still to be done around the ways in which we engage in concerted resistance: do we fight within institutional walls – and if so, how do we resist systems of perpetual visibilisation – the gaze of securitization that renders us so exposed? What does this fight look like? Do we exit – and if so, where to? Is there a new underground?

South Asian Diasporic Cinema: Encounters
The fourth issue of /DESI/ will focus on the question of encounters in diasporic South Asian cinema: Afghanistan, India, Maldives, Pakistan, Bangladesh Nepal and Sri Lanka. The transformation of this contemporary human condition into filmic material coincides with a turn in the scientific study of diasporas. Forced migrations, which generate a movement of displacement and settlement in home territories, movements of arrivals, caught in a logic of deterritorialization, diasporas – and more particularly South Asian diasporas – are all relocated in transnational and transcultural spaces. Cinema holds a mirror to this experience of movement through this new “ethnoscape” (Appadurai) made up of shifts and disjunctures, free flows and political hurdles, border-crossings and assignment of identity.

Journée d'études. "Traversées: Frontières et circulations dans les films d'Afrique et de sa diaspora".
Dans un monde global, postcoloniale marqué par l’inégalité de la mobilité et des circulations, la question de la frontière revient en force dans les films d'Afrique et de sa diaspora, à la fois comme lignes que l’on franchit ou qui séparent. La frontière, la traversée, s’imposent ainsi comme un prisme par excellence pour aborder les cinématographies contemporaines.
Sous le thème de la traversée – esthétique, thématique, théorique – cette journée d'études invitera donc des chercheurs, des critiques et des cinéastes à échanger et à dialoguer ensemble. Tables rondes et projections de films, en présence des réalisateurs/trices.

L'une des hypothèses de travail de ce séminaire est que les épistémologies issues de la guerre froide, qui ont eu souvent pour effet de naturaliser les catégories explicatives dichotomiques (problématique des blocs), ont en même temps soustrait à la mémoire des pans entiers d'histoire et ont fait des récits de ces évènements des squelettes sans promesse. Ce séminaire a donc pour objectif de rétablir les circulations artistiques, politiques, idéologiques et philosophiques qui, au lendemain de seconde guerre mondiale, ont largement nourri des artistes, des intellectuels et des représentants politiques dans les continents dits du Tiers Monde.

Travelling Narratives and Images in Times of Migration
Migrant narratives and aesthetic practices influenced by experiences of migration constitute a growing field in contemporary art and literature. Current patterns of migration and issues related to the protection of refugees and asylum seekers contribute to the strong societal impact of migrant aesthetics and narrratives, but also serve to explain the need for them as such, as well as the need to reexamine them. More than ever, we need to understand the experiences of exiles, migrants and refugees. The objective of this interdisciplinary seminar is to examine textual, material and visual expressions that represent, discuss and problematize migration.

Depuis la révolution néolithique, sanctionnant le passage de l’homme nomade à l’homme sédentaire et, par conséquent, l’avènement de la notion de propriété individuelle, collective, puis nationale, les frontières n’ont cessé de se consolider et de se fortifier afin de protéger des richesses nouvellement accumulées.

Le séminaire Les internationalismes au miroir des littératures et des cinémas (Afrique, Asie, Amérique latine) s'est donné pour objectif d'aborder sous un triple angle, historique et philosophique, les diverses formes d'internationalismes qui ont guidé les actions politiques depuis la conférence de Bandung jusqu'à l'effondrement de l'URSS (1955-1991). Et ce, à travers les formes littéraires et cinématographiques qui les ont accompagnées.

Les imaginaires migratoires au cinéma
Temporalités, territoires et identités
Dans le cadre du projet « Imaginaires migratoires » (INALCO) en partenariat avec l’URMIS et MIGRINTER, cette journée d’études rassemble des chercheurs d’horizons différents (sciences sociales et études filmiques) pour interroger la production des imaginaires migratoires par le cinéma. À partir de films relevant de genres variés, de cinématographies nationales diversifiées ou appartenant à la catégorie du cinéma transnational, on décryptera les configurations symboliques à l’œuvre dans ces films, grâce à la triade analytique : temporalités, territoires et identités. Ces trois axes guideront notre questionnement : dans quelles temporalités se déploient ces imaginaires migratoires ? Quelles sont leurs déclinaisons territoriales ? Comment ces fictions de la migration remodèlent les grands récits nationaux ou participent à la construction d’identités transnationales ou cosmopolites ?

This colloquium proposes a theoretical perspective on the visual art, film, performance and literature modules of the project Singapour mon amour curated by Lowave. Thematic sessions according to these art genres will draw a bigger picture of the artistic creation in Singapore and will inscribe it into an international art discourse. As a young country, Singapore's art history is still the process of being written and the colloquium aims to collect as many direct sources and witnesses as possible.

10th Annual and International Colloquium of the Society of Activities and Research on the Indian World
In the postcolonial theoretical framework, the study of heritage and ruptures is a rather familiar paradigm. But it is not a depleted paradigm. Given the millennial history of the Indian subcontinent and the plurality of its culture, the way its languages, literatures and arts appropriate the past, grasp the present and envisage the future remains a relevant object for inquiry. From the crossroads of diachronicity and synchronicity, tradition and modernity, singularity and solidarity, here and elsewhere, repetition and reinvention, the 10th annual SARI conference to be held on the 28th and 29th May 2015 at the Université Paris Ouest Nanterre la Défense and on the 30th May 2015 at the université Paris 13, Sorbonne Paris Cité, will be devoted to the exploration of this topic from an inter and pluridisciplinary perspective.
