  The Center of History of the School of Arts and Humanities of the University of Lisbon and the Institute of Contemporary History of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities of the NOVA University of Lisbon, are pleased to be hosting the II meeting of REPORT(H)A - Portuguese Network of Environmental History, in 2017 Spring. The cross cutting conference theme, Environmental Changes in Historical Perspective, is inscribed in transnational and transdisciplinary approaches, a challenge to the current academic research and debate in environmental sciences and humanities.

  The corpus of medieval texts concerning Physics and/or Life sciences describes numerous surprising phenomena, which cannot be explained by the common concepts of the time. A number of examples can be mentioned here: Various cures with or without medicines; Animal behavior: animal reproduction, molting, (or sloughing, shedding, ecdysis), metamorphosis, adaptation; Strange phenomena, or strange beings (aliens) described by travelers, or people one can trust; The attraction of body to another body, repulsion of body, the weights and the measures.

  Jeanne Villepreux-Power (1794-1871) - European scientist in the 19th century

  Naturaliste à la vie exceptionnelle, Jeanne Villepreux-Power fut une pionnière de la biologie marine, expérimentaliste, inventrice d’aquariums, et membre de diverses académies et sociétés dans toute l’Europe. Ce colloque permettra de revenir sur la vie et l’œuvre de la naturaliste, mais sera aussi l’occasion d’aborder de nombreux thèmes liés à cette figure révélatrice de l’histoire des sciences : l’essor de la biologie marine, les pratiques naturalistes dans et hors les institutions, la place des femmes dans la communauté scientifique internationale au XIX^e siècle.

  Simulation in the world, from the 19th century to the present day

  Inventing, experimenting and transforming the real

  L'expression « dispositifs de simulation du monde » désigne toute installation simulant la présence du spectateur dans un autre espace et/ou un autre temps, et visant à faire vivre à un large public une expérience historique, géographique et/ou physique, comme le panorama, le plan relief, le diorama, le cinéma, le géorama, le globe, les dispositifs optiques comme le zootrope, les parcs d'attraction ou à thèmes, les musées.  Ce colloque interroge comment ces dispositifs – produits de l'essor de connaissances scientifiques, techniques et des loisirs populaires – ont contribué à transformer la vision du monde des sociétés et le rapport au monde des individus (rapport au corps, au corps social, à l'espace, au temps, à l'ailleurs) depuis la fin du XIX^e siècle.

  “Medicalized” Childbirth as a Public Problem

  Risk Culture(s), Gender Politics, Techno-Reflexivities

  Obstetrical knowledge, technologies and practices have dramatically transformed women’s reproductive experiences worldwide. Medicalization of childbirth was accelerated in the XX^th century by the displacement of childbirth from home to the hospital, and by the generalization of surgical techniques and pharmaceutical products. Medical interventionism took multiple, situated forms. Relying on cross-cultural investigations and field data from diverse national contexts (France, USA, Italy, Brazil, Senegal, Turkey, Switzerland, Canada…), this international workshop investigates how “technological” birth came into being, and how it is produced, problematized, framed, and negotiated in the XXI^st century.

  Theodor Lipps (1851-1914): the work, its context and posterity - interdisciplinary perspectives

  Une perspective interdisciplinaire

  Cette journée d'étude se propose de réexaminer la pensée de Theodor Lipps (1851-1914), philosophe, psychologue et esthéticien, qui fut un penseur majeur de l'Allemagne de la fin du XIX^e et du début du XX^e siècle. Souvent cité pour ses travaux sur « l'empathie » (terme approximatif pour « Einfühlung »), Lipps demeure un auteur très mal connu dont l'œuvre a été étonnamment négligée par l'historiographie. On réunira, pour la première fois, des spécialistes de l'auteur qui, sur la base d'approches méthodologique variées, s'attacheront à revisiter ces thèmes typiquement lippsiens que sont l'esthétique, la psychologie, la théorie de la connaissance et la logique, mais aussi des aspects moins connus de sa pensée comme l'éthique, les sciences du langage ou l'histoire de l'art. Ceci devrait permettre de mieux comprendre les tenants et les aboutissants d'une œuvre sophistiquée et la manière dont elle s'inscrit dans son contexte scientifique et philosophique, ainsi que de souligner la pertinence des idées lippsiennes pour la recherche actuelle. On espère ainsi contribuer à la réhabilitation de la figure de Lipps et à la réévaluation de sa pensée, tout en dressant un état des lieux de ce champ de recherche inchoatif que sont les « études lippsiennes ».

  Saint-Antoine-l’Abbaye a constitué, du XII^e au XV^e siècle, un foyer artistique des plus dynamiques aux portes des Alpes. Le chantier de construction de l’église abbatiale s’est notamment avéré propice à l’expression d’une architecture et d’un décor gothiques aux sources multiples. Au XVIII^e siècle, c’est aussi à proximité immédiate de l’édifice que se situait un cabinet de curiosités, dont les collections d’histoire naturelle reflétaient alors l’ouverture des Antonins aux sciences.

  Art History for Artists: Interactions Between Scholarly Discourse and Artistic Practice in the 19th Century

  The development of art history as a discipline during the 19^th century has been variously associated with the politics of national identity, the needs of a growing bourgeois public in search of cultural capital, or of an expanding art market. However, the role of art training, and art practitioners themselves in the shaping of the discipline remains unexamined. Courses in art history had been systematically introduced in the curricula of art and architecture academies since the late 18^th century, and spaces of art education count among the first institutional homes of the discipline, well before the establishment of autonomous university chairs. This conference aims to explore the interactions and productive tensions between art practice and art scholarship in the 19^th century.

  Treatment - from the physical notion to its metaphorical representations in Greco-Roman Antiquity

  Lors de cette journée d’étude, nous étudierons la notion de traitement en nous concentrant sur le monde gréco-romain, de l’époque classique (V^e siècle avant J.-C.) jusqu’à l’antiquité tardive (jusqu’au VI^e siècle après J.-C.), afin d’analyser les divers types de traitements et leurs représentations et afin d’interpréter leur évolution au cours des siècles. Le traitement (en grec θεραπεύειν, ἰατρεύειν, ἰᾶσθαι ou en latin curare) est une notion assez large, c’est pourquoi nous souhaitons l’appréhender dans une perspective pluridisciplinaire.

  Abraham Ibn Ezra, a Twelfth-Century Polymath who Straddled Arabic, Hebrew and Latin Culture

  In the middle of the eighth century, with the completion of the Islamic conquest of the eastern, northern and part of the western shores of the Mediterranean, Jews managed to successfully integrate into the ruling society without losing their religious and national identity. They willingly adopted the Arabic language, spoke Arabic fluently, wrote Arabic in Hebrew letters (Judeo-Arabic), and employed Arabic in the composition of their literary works. The twelfth century witnessed a cultural phenomenon that saw Jewish scholars gradually abandon the Arabic language and adopt Hebrew, previously used almost exclusively for religious and liturgical purposes, for the first time as a vehicle for the expression of secular and scientific ideas.
