The Islamic Legacy in the 20th and 21st Centuries

The COST Action “Islamic Legacy: Narratives East, West, South, North of the Mediterranean (1350-1750)” [CA 18129] is launching a call for a Conference entitled “The Islamic Legacy in the 20th and 21st Centuries”. The event that we are disseminating is being organised within the this project, which as the purpose to provide a transnational and interdisciplinary approach capable of overcoming the segmentation that currently characterizes the study of relations between Christianity and Islam in late medieval and early modern Europe and the Mediterranean. We aim to create a network that will help to provide a comprehensive understanding of past relations between Christianity and Islam in the European context through the addressing of three main research problems: otherness, migration and borders. Images and Borderlands: Mediterranean basin between Christendom and Ottoman Empire in the Early Modern Age

Following in the footsteps of Fernand Braudel, an increasing number of recent studies show that the Mediterranean basin might be considered as a “borderland”, “borderscape” or “Frontier” suggesting that this area is not strictly a border between Christian and Muslim civilization, but a basin in which the two traditions and cultures meet and overlap, with an extraordinary variety of reactions to the hegemonic practices (acceptance, conflict, refusal, dissent). The aim of this conference is to bring together scholars who will discuss, from different perspectives and with a multidisciplinary approach, the variety of themes (topics) which revolve around the common issue of reflecting the problem of borderlands as a consequence of the encounter between Christendom and Ottoman Empire in the Early modern Mediterranean. The starting point of examination will be images, i.e. the usage of images (pictures, mental images, literary images and other visual representations …) as historical evidence.

Le comité d’histoire des ministères chargés de la Jeunesse et des sports avec le concours des Archives nationales organise une journée d’étude consacrée aux actions culturelles et pédagogiques menées de la Libération à nos jours par les instructeurs d'éducation populaire, et leurs héritiers, les conseillers techniques et pédagogiques (CTP) et conseillers d’éducation populaire et de jeunesse (CEPJ). Grâce à des communications scientifiques, des témoignages, et la présentation de films et d'enregistrements audio, il s'agira de restituer et d'analyser ce qu'ont été les actions menées par ces fonctionnaires particuliers, mi-artistes mi-pédagogues pour les premières générations, dans les domaines du théâtre, du chant choral, de la danse, du folklore et de l'image fixe et animée, avec un intérêt particulier pour le stage de réalisation, dispositif privilégié.

Échanges et appropriations (1850-2020) » abordera la question des échanges et des appropriations culturelles entre la France et les États-Unis, de manière interdisciplinaire, pour en cerner les effets et les modes opératoires sur l’univers sensible tant des Français que des Nord-Américains à partir de quatre portes d’entrée : le corps (manières de se comporter, place accordée au corps dans la vie quotidienne), la voix (manières de parler, de chanter, vocalités, environnement sonore radiophonique et télévisuel), la langue (manières d’écrire et de penser, représentations), les formes (influence des arts savants et populaires dans l’environnement sonore et visuel quotidien).

Body and soul. The life and death of women in the Early Middle Ages

History and archaeology

Inspiré à la fois par la richesse des terres du Grand-Est sur les traces d'un monachisme féminin original et le profond renouvellement de l'historiographie et de l'archéologie concernant les femmes au haut Moyen Âge durant les dernières années, ce colloque voudrait faire le portrait de la variété des femmes comme personnes et comme membres de communautés, et préciser les caractéristiques de la féminité en Occident avant le XII^e siècle. En utilisant toutes les sources documentaires, il s'intéressera à la condition des femmes les mieux documentées mais également, dans une démarche d'anthropologie historique, à celles des couches les moins aisées de la société. L'archéologie funéraire avec toutes ses disciplines connexes, contribuera à nourrir le dialogue sur l'anthropologie du féminin durant le premier Moyen Âge.

From the city to the nation: continuity and rupture in the history of contemporary Spanish song (19th-21st centuries)

Afin de déconstruire le récit sur la chanson espagnole instrumentalisé par le franquisme, ce colloque invite à réfléchir sur une histoire plus complète et plus complexe de celle-ci, ainsi que sur l’identification des topiques qui ont permis de créer une cohésion nationale à travers la chanson contemporaine. Dans ce cadre, il est également nécessaire de prendre en compte l'importance des chansons dans la création et la transmission des identités liées aux régions, aux villes, aux lieux et même aux quartiers, qui contribuent à l'analyse avec une approche différente. Ce colloque a pour objet d’examiner, dans l’aire culturelle hispanique, les rapports entre chanson et territoire à l’époque contemporaine, de 1808 à nos jours et étudier, dans la chanson, l’évocation des lieux et des imaginaires qu’elle mobilise pour devenir emblématique du territoire national.

Poetry and Politics in the Viking and Norman Diasporas (Ninth-Thirteenth Centuries)

The conference will address the relationships between poetry and power in the medieval world, fostering exchanges between historians and scholars in the fields of Latin and vernacular literatures. The poems under scrutiny will be those composed in the Viking and Norman diasporas between the ninth and the thirteenth century, covering a wide geographical expanse, from Iceland to Southern Italy, through Britain and Ireland, Scandinavia, Kievan Rus’ and part of the Latin East. The main questions which will be studied are: (1) the specific context for the composition of political poetry (e.g. encomiastic or satiric); (2) poetry as a means for the representation of power or the transmission of moral or religious conceptions (e.g. mirrors for princes, didactic or gnomic poetry); (3) the reasons for preferring poetry over prose in order to convey political ideas.

The Classics in the Pulpit. Ancient Literature and Preaching in the Middle Ages

The aim of the conference is to shed new light on this both striking and irritating practice. Papers (25 min) can deal with topics such as the reasons and occasions for the use of the classics in preaching, the hermeneutic and literary strategies applied in order to adapt pagan mythology to homiletic needs, the social and educational background of preachers and their audiences, the connections of classicizing sermons with other fields of literature such as vernacular poetry, or the discourse they provoked within the clerical milieu. Applications from all relevant disciplines (e.g. history, literature, theology, philosophy) are welcome.

Kandinsky library summer school

L’université d'été de la bibliothèque Kandinsky est un programme du Centre Pompidou qui se déroule dans l’espace des collections permanentes du musée national d’Art moderne. Elle a pour objet les sources de l’art moderne et contemporain : archives, documentation écrite, photographique ou filmique, témoignages, formes de production documentaire par les artistes. Format interdisciplinaire, l’université d'été de la bibliothèque Kandinsky réunit de jeunes chercheur·e·s : historiens et historiens de l’art, anthropologues et sociologues, artistes, critiques, commissaires d’expositions, qui partagent un travail collectif sur les sources documentaires. Ils se réunissent tous et toutes autour de la table-vitrine de l’université d'été à la fois dispositif d’accueil, table de montage et d’exposition. Elle recueille fac-similés, reproductions, sources archivistiques et documentaires proposées ou évoquées au cours des séances. Plusieurs ateliers d’écriture rythment le parcours de l’université d’été.

Listening and writing resonance: between music and philosophy

La notion de résonance, enjeu central à la fois dans les réflexions sur le son et dans les productions sonores actuelles, convoque deux disciplines qui marqueront les orientations de ce colloque : la musicologie et la philosophie. L’appel à communications distingue délibérément les deux versants, afin que chacun puisse, dans son domaine scientifique propre, mener une réflexion approfondie. Ainsi, croiser les deux disciplines dans les propositions de communications n’est pas nécessairement attendu, même si cela peut être bienvenu. En revanche, les organisateurs s’efforceront de faire s’interpénétrer musicologie et philosophie lors des journées du colloque, afin que de perspectives nouvelles puissent s’ouvrir.

The Philosophical Journal of Conflict and Violence (PJCV) is seeking articles dealing with philosophical issues that arise in connection with the conception of conflict and violence within Plato’s philosophy. Conflict and violence are often regarded as two of Plato’s main interests in his political thought, especially when he discusses the dread and danger they bring to the city. However, is it possible to understand conflict and violence in Plato’s work only from this political and rather pejorative standpoint? It is possible to see conflict and violence in Plato’s philosophy as something else, rather than a threat to the harmony of the community?

Towards a Decentered History of Dance

How is history moved, reconfigured, stimulated, by current research on dance? In connection with the Lyon Dance Biennale and the forthcoming publication of A History of Dance in the West (Ed. Seuil, Sept. 2020), this international conference in Lyon, France, aims to extend questions addressed by scholars’ contributions to the book, as well as generate entirely new dialogues via various acts of “decentering” dance historical scholarship. The polysemic notion of decentering is here understood as an invitation to reevaluate theoretical models, methods, approaches and historiographies of dance.
