On the Roads of Arabia: Itineraries by Land and Sea
From the Bronze Age to the Islamic Period
The aim of the symposium is to study the overland and maritime routes of the Arabian Peninsula and the exchanges they made possible, through archaeology, history, philology, religion and life sciences. This topic will be addressed in the longue durée, from the Bronze Age to the Islamic period. The symposium will also examine the networks of exchanges with border regions such as the Indian subcontinent, the Horn of Africa and Egypt, as well as the empires of the Ancient Near East, and the Greek and Roman empires.

14th International Congress on the Archaeology of the Ancient Near East
The International Congress on the Archaeology of the Ancient Near East has been organised since 1998 by the scientific community of scholars working on and in the Near East. It is an exceptional forum for dialogue and scientific exchanges between all colleagues involved in the study of the Ancient Near East. After twelve years, the ICAANE comes back to France to the city of lights Lyon. From June 2 to 7 2025, the fourteenth International Congress on the Archaeology of the Ancient Near East will take place in Lyon. It is organised by the Université Lumière Lyon 2 and the Maison de l’Orient et de la Méditerranée.

Politisations des archéologies : fouilles, conflits et mémoires
En nous montrant le site de Sobibor, où les nazis implantèrent un camp d’extermination avant de tenter d’en effacer les traces, le film « Sheol » d’Arnaud Sauli nous le rappelle : contemporainement ou des décennies plus tard, les restes matériels des activités humaines se retrouvent fréquemment au cœur d’enjeux et conflits juridiques, politiques ou encore moraux. Les savoirs « archéologiques », relatifs à ces restes matériels, jouent dès lors un rôle essentiel dans ces conflits, et qu’il s’agisse des savoirs développés scientifiquement que ceux possédés par tout un chacun. Dans ce séminaire, deux historiens des sciences et une ethnologue emploieront trois cas pour décliner les manières dont les rapports se nouent entre les enjeux du présent et ces restes matériels d’activités passées : qu’il s’agisse d’activités anciennes ou récentes, belliqueuses ou quotidiennes, et relatives aux constructions nationales en des contextes proches ou lointains, étatiques ou infra-étatiques (Suisse, Palestine et Israël, Pays Basque et Espagne).

The places of funerary rituals
Multifunctionality and the interrelationship between funerary and domestic spaces in the Neolithic and Bronze ages in the Near East and Mediterranean
Les rituels funéraires, même réduits à leurs traces archéologiques ou à des mentions littéraires dans les textes anciens, apparaissent comme des suites de gestes complexes. Pris au sens large, ils englobent des activités distinctes de la seule déposition du corps, par exemple la construction des tombes, la préparation des défunts et l’exposition des corps, les manipulations d’ossements post-sépulcrales, la fabrication du mobilier funéraire, l’organisation de cérémonies impliquant la consommation collective de boisson et de nourriture et éventuellement des jeux funèbres, les rassemblements commémoratifs. Or ces activités nécessitent le recours à des lieux différents de la tombe et de la nécropole et à des objets autres que le seul mobilier funéraire, tels que vaisselle, outils, dispositifs de stockage, instruments de soins corporels… Des espaces domestiques, publics ou privés, intérieurs ou extérieurs, peuvent donc revêtir sporadiquement ou durablement des fonctions funéraires.

Burial mounds and funerary customs in the Caucasus, Northwestern Iran and Eastern Anatolia during the Bronze and Iron Age
The tradition of burying the dead in burial mounds (kurgans), usually consisting of a funerary chamber limited by stone or brickslabs and covered by dirt and gravel, started in the fourth millennium BCE in the northern Caucasus and then spread south to the rest of the Caucasus regions, eastern Anatolia and northwestern Iran during the Bronze Age and Iron Age. The spread of the kurgan tradition, as well as the territorial, political, social, and cultural values embedded in their construction and their symbolic relation to the surrounding landscape are under debate. The workshop aims to examine chronological issues, cultural dynamics at inter-regional scale, rituals and burial patterns related to these funerary structures. The beliefs and ideologies that possibly connected the "kurgan people" over such a wide geographical area, as well as past and present theoretical frameworks, will also be discussed.

Borders, margins and cultural spaces
Archéorient Reseach laboratory, looking the current state of research methods and fieldwork in the ancient Near-East
L’enjeu est de réfléchir sur les notions de frontières et de marges, sur leurs manifestations matérielles ou idéelles, sur leur perméabilité (frontières imperméables ou espaces poreux) et sur leurs fluctuations dans le temps et dans l’espace. Une attention sera également portée aux éventuels recoupements entre ces limites et la définition des aires culturelles. Au delà, l’idée est également de revenir sur la perception que les sociétés anciennes pouvaient avoir de l’espace et de la territorialité. Le séminaire comprend onze interventions couvrant une fourchette chronologique large, allant du Néolithique à l’Antiquité. L'aire géographique concernée est celle des terrain d'Archéorient : la Méditerranée orientale et le Proche- et Moyen-Orient.

From the Caucasus to the Arabian Peninsula: studying domestic spaces in the Neolithic
Under neolithisation scholars understand multiple processes of social and economic transformation which begin at different times and follow regional trends in the Near and Middle East. It is within the complex relational and spatial framework of the household that these shifts in the structure and activities of Neolithic communities are easiest to apprehend and study. The conference will therefore focus on the domestic sphere in order to highlight and understand the polymorphous nature of what we call neolithisation. Various thematic sessions will be held to shed new light on current data: “Impacts of the shift to a sedentary/semi-sedentary lifestyle”; “Organising the house and the household”; “Private space/public space”; “Acquisition, production, transformation and use”; “Eating-Moving”; “Symbolic manifestations”;“The living and the dead”.

Premières rencontres d'archéologie de l'Ifea : archéologies et espaces parcourus
En novembre 2010, l’Institut français d'études anatoliennes inaugurera un événement qui, projeté de longue date, n’avait pu encore aboutir. Ainsi, à compter de 2010, l’Ifea organisera chaque année les Rencontres d’Archéologie à l’Ifea qui visent à réunir l’ensemble des acteurs français en ce domaine et en Turquie ainsi que leurs partenaires turcs et étrangers. Il s’agit non seulement d’offrir une plateforme scientifique de rencontres aux chercheurs, mais aussi d’accroître le dynamisme des activités archéologiques françaises en Turquie en développant le réseau scientifique et institutionnel existant. Ces rencontres auront aussi pour ambition de resserrer les liens entre institutions, personnels scientifiques français et turcs et de développer le vivier des jeunes chercheurs.
