“Community Healthcare” in the Americas: (dis)continuities and reappropriations

Community health, which refers to a set of practices and intervention models grounded in social participation and a promotional-preventive approach, began to emerge during the 1960s as an alternative way of delivering healthcare. The American continent was one of the incubators of this approach, drawing on liberation theology and popular education movements in Latin America, the Free Clinics and the Neighborhood Health Clinics in the United States, and the interaction between popular movements and the State during Quebec’s Quiet Revolution. This issue of the journal IdeAs proposes a continental approach to community health.

Religion and immigration in the United States and Canada: A Bottom-Up Perspective
In recent years, there has been an upsurge of interest in the religious beliefs and practices of immigrant populations in both popular and academic discourse. While this topic is most often addressed as part of larger conversations about multiculturalism and social cohesion within the broader society, scholars are increasingly turning their attention to religious identities as experienced by the immigrants themselves. This conference will take a “bottom up” approach to explore how religion has factored into the migrant trajectories, lived experience, and imaginaries of newcomers to the United States and Canada from the nineteenth century through to the present day.

Polémiques et controverses médiatiques, tensions politiques et débat public
Ce séminaire 2024-2025 du GREPs (Groupe de recherche sur les écrans et leurs publics) appréhende les dynamiques de confrontation qui traversent les mondes du cinéma et de l’audiovisuel. Replacés dans leur contexte, ils permettent de mettre au jour les reconfigurations permanentes des rapports de force au sein de multiples espaces sociaux, mais aussi l’intensité des mécanismes de concentration de l’attention et de dissémination de certaines prises de position (Quemener 2018), « où s’expriment de manière parfois virulente et spectaculaire les antagonismes qui travaillent le collectif » (Devars et Taieb 2023). À ce titre, les polémiques et controverses ne sauraient laisser indifférents et constituent de précieux terrains d’investigation pour de nombreuses disciplines.

This conference aims to study the representations of the city of Detroit in order to examine their ideological, political, and ethical subtexts from a diachronic and multidisciplinary perspective. Presentations may focus on works of fiction or non-fiction (books, films, series, videogames, documentaries, photographs, etc.) as well as on other types of representations, such as news reports or political speeches.

À l’occasion de la traduction-événement de l’ouvrage d’Annette Lareau, Unequal Childhoods / Enfances inégales. Classe, race et vie de famille, et de la venue exceptionnelle en France de la sociologue américaine, le ministère de la Culture (DEPS), l’université Paris Cité, le Cerlis (Centre de recherche sur les liens sociaux), le Centre lillois d’études et de recherches sociologiques et économiques (Clersé) et ENS Éditions organisent une journée d’étude. La présentation de cet ouvrage (traduit de l’américain par Camille Salgues, préface de Sylvie Octobre, Kevin Diter et Régine Sirota) s’adresse à toutes celles et ceux, familiers ou non des sciences sociales, qui souhaitent comprendre les modalités et conséquences des inégalités sociales états-uniennes à hauteur d’enfants.

L’exportation du fouriérisme en Amérique a pris des formes multiples. À quelques exceptions près, les formes concrètes de cette exportation sont peu et mal connues dans le monde francophone. Ce numéro 33 des Cahiers Charles Fourier comble pour partie cette lacune en rendant compte de la diffusion de la pensée fouriériste aux États-Unis au cours du XIXe siècle. L’ambition est de regarder comment la mémoire des communautés fouriéristes a pu, ou non, se maintenir au fil des décennies. S’inscrivant dans des perspectives méthodologiques variées, les articles mobilisent une diversité de disciplines et de pratiques (archéologie, histoire, droit, photographie et, plus largement, sciences sociales).

Recent events in the United States remind us to what extent the South is both a place of distinctive identities and a space sharing a common heritage. According to the political scientist Michael Goldfield, “The South is a distinctive, atypical part of the United States; it is also, however, America writ large”. These specificities are inscribed in social, cultural, political and, according to the author, above all economic structures, in a configuration that makes any definition of the “South” problematic. On the occasion of the release of Michael Goldfield’s latest book, The Southern Key (2020) we want to address these issues during an international symposium in the presence of the author.

According to the political scientist Michael Goldfield, “The South is a distinctive, atypical part of the United States; it is also, however, America writ large”" (Goldfield, 2020). These specificities are inscribed in social, cultural, political and, according to the author, above all economic structures, in a configuration that makes any definition of the “South” problematic. For this conference, we propose three different angles of approach: the interaction between race, class and capital; the spatial dimension of these interactions; the causes for and the perpetuation of racism in the United States.

Non-Binary Black Representations in Post-Obama Popular Cultures
The election of Barack Obama to the American presidency has ushered in a so-called “post-racial” era. This phenomenon is spreading to all popular media, from television and its hit series to comics and video games. It is from this observation of representations of black identities, which question any form of binarity and operate intersectional deployments within African American popular cultures, that the main question at the origin of this project emerges. Based on papers about these representations in the popular arts, accessible to a large majority as well as within the Black American community, this one-day conference aims to examine the evolution of these representations over the past ten years and the obvious efforts to move away from the binary normative representations still attributed to U.S. racial minorities—more so than to the so-called dominant white majority.

La recherche ou la fuite d’une de ces deux extrémités met en jeu notre rapport aux ressources, au besoin et au désir, et nous invite à réfléchir à la question de la valeur, de la norme, et de l’excès. D’abord une question de survie fondamentale, notre rapport à l’abondance et au manque peut s’observer dans l'organisation de nos sociétés, de la langue, mais aussi dans nos recherches d’une esthétique et d’une expression. Ce colloque proposera une réflexion interdisciplinaire sur ces deux notions dans le monde anglophone.

Stratégies de légitimation et postures d’autorité », cet atelier interroge la façon dont les récits autobiographiques, qu’il s’agisse d’ouvrages publiés sous la forme d’autobiographies à proprement parler, de mémoires, de témoignages, de journaux, ou de textes mis en ligne, permettent à leur auteur·rice d’asseoir ou de consolider une légitimité, voire de rétablir une autorité mise à mal, que cela soit dans l’espace des mouvements sociaux ou dans la sphère politique institutionnalisée, aux États-Unis.

Elle propose d’analyser les différentes formes qu’a pris la migration des Africain·e·s Américain·e·s depuis le mouvement des droits civiques en s’intéressant au croisement entre mobilité géographique et mobilité sociale.
