  Politics in Africa: A Family Affair?

  Revue « Cahiers d'études africaines »

  This special issue aims, therefore, at accounting for the original logic of production in the family as a place of politics in terms of enunciation, representations and/or practices. We encourage original submissions based on empirical data. These contributions can also develop a more reflexive approach regarding the difficulties encountered in accessing and collecting ethnographic material relating to intimate and private realms and/or present methodological approaches regarding original tools that authors have used or developed to compile and analyze their data.

  Cet appel à contribution de la revue Géocarrefour souhaite réfléchir aux relations entre imagination et cours d'eau. Par l’intermédiaire de l’analyse du fonctionnement et de la gestion des cours d’eau, aussi bien les chercheurs que d’autres acteurs participent à imaginer et construire les cours d’eau de demain. En effet, à l’heure de la gouvernance et de la co-production des connaissances et des problématiques, l’ouverture à la pluralité des parties prenantes est prônée. Ainsi, la gestion durable des cours d’eau ne peut plus s’appuyer uniquement sur les sciences, porte-paroles à elles seules des cours d’eau.

  The art of the diorama (1700-2000) - "Culture et Musées" journal

  Revue « Culture et Musées »

  Entendu comme un dispositif d’exposition multidimensionnel et multimédia, le diorama est à la frontière de différentes disciplines et catégories d’institutions muséales. Vingt ans après le numéro consacré aux dioramas par la revue Public et Musées sous la direction de Bernard Schiele (1996) qui questionnait le statut du diorama en muséologie, il importe de réinterroger ces installations. Ce numéro propose de remettre le diorama au centre d’une étude des institutions muséales, en insistant d’une part, sur la matérialité de ces dispositifs (Bennett, Joyce, 2010), et, d’autre part, sur l’identité de ceux qui les fabriquent.

  The idiosyncrasy of indigenism in Latin America

  Plurality of sources and extra-Latin American appropriations

  The theme of this forthcoming issue of Artelogie deals with the indigenism as a centrifugal, plurisecular and cross-cultural phenomenon. We would like to study it as transfers between cultures, which are very different at different moments in history - i.e. the pre-Colombian era- and in the space. Thus, a multidisciplinary approach seems essential, linking art history, the history of the ideas, and anthropology. In this study it is also necessary to consider the themes of  political, diplomatic, and economic exchange between France and Latin American countries.

  Paper, airwaves, screen: from text to audience in African popular culture

  This conference aims to reflect on the critical spaces of reading and listening that occur in and around popular cultural texts in Africa – from songs, magazines, romance fiction, and hip-hop lyrics, to blogs, facebook posts, and urban inscriptions. Drawing on the methods of cultural studies, material print cultures, and the sociology of reception, we seek to engage with the critical vocabulary generated by those spaces of reception at a time of transition for the book object and the reading practices which accompany it. How can this material be researched (archives, interviews, ethnographic observation, digitisation, databases)? How is/might it be integrated into teaching across disciplines?

  The history of fund raising and its uses (19th-21st centuries)

  Née dans le sillage du romantisme, la collecte des archives orales se répand en France dans la seconde moitié du XIX^e siècle, les efforts ainsi déployés rejoignant ceux des lexicographes du siècle des Lumières qui notaient, au détour de la traduction d’un mot, telles coutume, croyance ou pratique. Président à toutes ces collectes la déploration de mondes en voie de disparition, menacés par l’urbanisation, le désenclavement des campagnes, la scolarisation et l’intrusion de l’écrit. Garder une trace de tous ces « monuments », de toutes ces « survivances » sert alors le projet d’une histoire de l’humanité et d’une élucidation de ses origines, projet commun aux explorateurs, missionnaires et colonisateurs investis outre-mer dans des entreprises ethnographiques.

  Musical cultures in Latin America (16th-21st centuries)

  Pour leur prochain numéro (n°35, 1^er semestre 2018), les Cahiers ALHIM publiés par l’université Paris 8 invitent des chercheurs issus de différents horizons (histoire, ethnomusicologie, sociologie de la musique…) à établir un état des lieux de la recherche sur les Cultures musicales en Amérique latine (XVIème-XXIème siècle). Ce numéro s’intéressera non seulement aux processus de création, mais aussi à la musique en tant que fait social, aux pratiques de sociabilité qui lui sont liées, et à son efficacité à l’heure de penser des dispositifs de politique symbolique, que ce soit au sein d’institutions ou mouvements sociaux.

  Time, Space, and Power in Qualitative Research on the MENA (Middle East and North Africa) Region and Europe

  Since the start of the 21^st century seemingly unpredictable change, in all its different guises, has fueled the preoccupations of academic and non-academic publics. The financial crisis, the “Arab Spring”, protest movements in southern Europe, the rise of Daesh and right-wing populism, as well as the environmental crisis all make it very difficult to rely on Francis Fukuyama’s theory of “end of history”, which now seems to merely reflect the euphoria of liberal elites following the collapse of the Soviet Union (1992). This workshop intends to reflect more closely on the webs of power affecting both the researcher and‚ the researched when they intend to represent change.

  Corpses in our rubbish bins

  Human Remains & Waste Spaces from Prehistory to the Present Day

  In both modern and archaeological contexts, many human remains are uncovered from structures that contain waste (such as broken pottery, food waste, and so on). These depositions are probably not merely evidence of a simple abandonment, or of depriving somebody of a grave. They are often associated with a deliberate intention to consider the body negatively –in whole or in part–, or to liken it to a piece of rubbish. For what reasons is this done? Where, when, and in what contexts do we find these depositions? Denying somebody a funeral seems in some cases a double outrage. Is this the case always and everywhere? How, by whom and why are some individuals deliberately thrown into rubbish dumps or landfill sites? Who are these individuals? Interpreting these configurations—whether they arise from archaeological or forensic discoveries –is always difficult, and has up until now impeded a wider understanding of this phenomenon.
