  Summer School - History

  The "Face" of First World War Battlefields and Battles

  The centenary in 2016 of the two iconic battles of the First World War – Verdun and the Somme – leads us to reconsider battles and battlefields in the historiography of the First World War. Since John Keegan’s pioneering Face of Battle (1976), generations of historians have expanded our understanding of the experience of combat, as well as our knowledge of the literary and artistic representations of the battlefield. The way we think about the legacy of battles in the memory of the First World War around the world, too, has changed. Our week in Verdun and Péronne will not only give us time to reflect on the current state of research on the battles of the First World War and discover the most recent advancements in battlefield archeology and environmental history of warfare, but also confront these readings with on-the-ground visits to the sites studied.

  Reconstruction and Resettlement in the Wake of War

  This two-day workshop will examine the interlinked processes of post-war urban reconstruction and population resettlement. Extending chronologically from the American Civil War to the mid-twentieth century, and covering a broad array of geographic locations, from North America to Europe, the Middle East and East Asia, it explores how war-torn urban environments have been rebuilt and repopulated. From the mid-nineteenth century, towns and cities increasingly became the pivots of large-scale military action, and urban residents from Atlanta to Paris, Warsaw and Tokyo felt the full force of modern weaponry. But as destruction and displacement gave way to reconstruction and resettlement, the residents of these war-afflicted urban centres faced further challenges. By exploring how they returned and reconstructed their shattered homes, this workshop seeks to understand the long-term effects of conflict on the social dynamics of communities.

  Occupied Societies in Western Europe: Conflict and Encounter in the 20th Century

  The history of Western Europe in the first half of the 20th Century was shaped by numerous contradictions: by conflicts and interdependencies, proximity and distance, violence and co-operation. Many of these elements can be identified in the structures and dynamics of Western European societies under German occupation. After all, the relationship between occupiers and the occupied cannot simply be reduced to "collaboration" and "resistance", in contrast to the suggestions of an older historiography.

  Ce colloque s’inscrit dans le cadre du projet de « War Memory » de la MSH Val de Loire. Il a pour objectif de réunir des spécialistes de différents domaines (historiens, civilisationnistes, anthropologues, littéraires, historiens du droit…) autour de la question de la mémoire des guerres, en centrant l’étude sur un conflit trop longtemps oublié : la guerre franco-prussienne de 1870. Il ambitionne de réunir en particulier des bilans historiographiques des mémoires de la guerre de 1870 ; des analyses des « moments », des ruptures, des rejeux et des éclipses de la mémoire de la guerre franco-prussienne ; des études régionales et locales sur les traces du conflit et ses « lieux de mémoire » ; des approches comparées des mémoires des guerres.

  Order in War. Gendarmeries and Police facing WWI

  During the First World War, as peacetime economies were transformed into war-focused production systems, European law- enforcement agencies had to adapt to new conditions. The wartime reorganizations of police forces need to be understood comparatively. The First World War set a series of similar requirements in all European countries at war and, to some extent, in some neutral countries also. This conference aims to open new perspectives rather than bringing full and final responses. This is a particularly broad, complex and new historiographic field: the history of law enforcement institutions in Europe in a specific context - specifically total war, the kind of conflict that significantly fostered forms of disorder. We will focus particularly on the diversity of forces, from military to civil police, posted or not on the front line, in belligerent or neutral countries, in metropoles or empires.

  Societies confronted by terror (from 1960 to the present day): discourse, memory and identity

  Ce colloque a pour objectif de réunir des spécialistes de différents domaines (civilisationnistes, historiens, linguistes, sémioticiens historiens de l’art, politologues, spécialistes des médias, de littérature,) autour d’un sujet qui, avec des pics d’acuité variables, a été au centre même de la vie des sociétés occidentales depuis les années 60. Il s’agira de déterminer comment ces sociétés réagissent à travers la production de discours spécifiques à la déstabilisation recherchée par le terrorisme. Le colloque se propose donc d’établir, par la voie contrastive, une cartographie de ces discours de résistance et de combat, et de mettre en lumière aussi bien les invariants que les différences irréductibles qui tiennent à la multiplicité des contextes et des acteurs ainsi qu'à la longévité du phénomène.

  Death in Europe from the 17th-21st century

  Representations, rites and uses

  Trois doctorants de première années du CRIHAM proposent une journée d'études sur la mort, dans la lignée des récents travaux du laboratoire sur les violences, les guerres et les reliques politiques. Quel que soit l'espace culturel et l'époque étudiée, l'Homme entretient un rapport étroit avec la mort. Elle est la pierre angulaire de nombreuses réflexions philosophiques, de postures sociales, de fantasmes et de croyances. Elle interpelle constamment l'individu et le collectif. Quand elle ne les frappe pas directement, elle agit sur eux à travers la mémoire. Michel Vovelle et Philippe Ariès avaient respectivement observé que le XVII^e siècle et la seconde moitié du XX^e siècle marquaient deux temps de profondes mutations du rapport à la mort. On propose d'étudier ce sujet, entre ces deux moments clés, à travers les représentations artistiques, les rites mortuaires et les usages médicaux et médico-légaux.

  Italy’s Decade of War: 1935-1945 in International Perspective

  From the invasion of Abyssinia to the end of World War II, Italy experienced a decade of war. This conference aims to re-evaluate the history of the Italian experience during this ten-year period with a unifying perspective that places the Italian Fascist regime and its foreign and military enterprises in an entirely internationalised framework of analysis. It will bring an international focus upon the Italian role in the break-down of the international system and appeasement, and will analyse the consequences of Italian militarism on a global scale. It will explore comparative and transnational histories of the Italian occupations of France, the Balkans, Greece, and Albania, as well as the Allied occupation of Italy following the defeat.

Du Maréchal de Vauban au  général Du Portail, père du corps des ingénieurs américains au XVIII^e siècle, nombreux furent les sapeurs à se distinguer et à laisser en héritage des réalisations qui allaient bien au-delà des aspects militaires.

  Ce colloque s’inscrit dans le cadre d’un cycle consacré aux Conflits, initié en 2014, en écho aux commémorations de la Grande Guerre, par le comité d’histoire régionale, service du conseil régional de Lorraine. Il a pour ambition d’aborder ce thème dans la diachronie (de l’Antiquité à nos jours) et aborde les conflits en tant que processus long, intégrant les temps de préparation ou de conflit larvé, l’éclatement et le déroulement de la guerre, et la période suivant le retour à la paix. Après un premier opus consacré aux conflits et progrès scientifiques et techniques, ce sont les relations entre conflits, urbanismes et territoires qui sont au cœur du présent colloque. Centrées sur le fait urbain, les problématiques peuvent toutefois être étendues aux territoires connectés à la ville ou aux relations entre agglomérations rurales, même modestes, et fait militaire.

  Historians have been conscious of the major importance of arsenals and for some time now have been interested in these establishments, for to study the arsenal is to understand the preparation made for war, a common and transversal thread of naval historiography. This unit also lends itself to "total history", that is simultaneously economic, social, financial, technological, industrial, geographical, strategic, maritime ... Naval arsenals are therefore well known and the study of them has mostly been carried out within the framework of major theses, each institution having found "its" historian.

  Civilians at stake: mass violence in Asia and Europe from 1931 to the present

  On the occasion of the seventieth anniversary of the end of World War II, the Online Encyclopedia of Mass Violence has organized an international and interdisciplinary meeting. By bringing together key innovative specialists in philosophy, political science, law and history, the conference intends to reflect on the definition and role of civilians during mass violence. Civilians are understood here as victims of bombing or as actors resisting to ground-based mass violence. The meeting focuses on World War II as a touchstone period but also tries to assess its role in the longue durée up to the present. It takes the term “world war” literally, with special emphasis on the Asian continent, aiming at the opening of new horizons leading to more globally oriented research.
