  Museums and industry: Long Histories of Collaboration - Postdoc position

  The Laboratoire d’études et de recherche sur le monde anglophone, Aix-Marseille University (AMU), is shortly to commence a major academic research project, “Museums and industry: Long Histories of Collaboration” (MaILHoC). Working with partners in the UK, Spain, and Norway, the aim of the project is to explore the impacts of industrial patronage – with a particular focus on the ethical dimensions of this relationship – on European museums of science and industry in both comparative and historical context. The project will compare insights drawn from a wide spread of historical case studies with a range of contemporary workshops exploring the ethics of industrial patronage. This position is based at AMU’s Humanities Faculty in Aix-en-Provence. The successful candidate will carry out research in archives in France and Britain while also participating in events organised by the various partners.

  Ecologizing Economics

  Reflexivity, Methods and Interdisciplinarity in the Age of Anthropocene

  In the context of a multidimensional ecological crisis, economic analysis is challenged to adapt its methods so that it can remain relevant to contemporary issues. In particular, calls to strengthen the consideration of biogeophysical dynamics are becoming more and more pressing. The aim of this workshop is to bring together young researchers to question the place of economics in the ecosystem of disciplines in the context of ecological emergency. To help us in our reflection, we will have the pleasure to welcome prof. Michiru Nagatsu from the Helsinki Institute of Sustainability Science. We encourage young scholars (widely defined) researching in economics, philosophy, sociology, history of economic thought or any related discipline to apply to this methodological workshop, either as a speaker or as a simple participant.

  Knowing the planet: environment, technology, and development in the 19th and 20th centuries

  This one-day workshop will interrogate the relationship between environment and technology in developmental projects, practices, and discourses during the 19^th and 20^th centuries. Several fields such as histories of environment, histories of technology, global history, and histories of development have recently expanded in new directions that could provide fruitful dialogues. All these scholarly shifts are important to a deeper historicization of environmental knowledge in the context of global climate crisis. Bringing together case studies from different geographical settings across the 19^th and 20^th centuries, the workshop will ask what role has technology played in the production of environmental knowledge? What role has environmental knowledge played in the politics of ‘progress’?

  Ces troisièmes journée d’étude des Jeunes chercheurs du GIS Patrimoines militaires sont consacrées à l’exploration des modifications apportées sur le temps long à l’architecture militaire, afin de l’adapter aux besoins évolutifs de l’armée et des sociétés (en matière de défense, d’habitat…). En corolaire, la journée s’attachera également à envisager les diverses manières de valoriser un patrimoine qui résulte d’une succession d’interventions dont souvent la dernière tend à effacer par sa visibilité immédiate celles qui l’ont précédées.

  Since several decades, historians and sociologists of science scrutinize the history of science as a practice. References demonstrate, first, the relevance of investigating who are the writers of disciplinary histories and what are the uses of these histories and, second, archaeologists’ concern to this regard. This session organised by the “History of Archaeology” commission is intended to strengthen these studies from the case of archaeology.

  Science, Technology and Nationalism in India

  Although the question of nationalism in India has been of interest to many social science scholars, the relationship between science and nationalism has seldom been discussed in an in-depth manner. STS perspectives and debates allow a framework that investigates the pivotal role and position of science and technology in the realization of state policies in India through several technoscientific projects and illustrates how deeply it is enmeshed within the larger political and social goals of national growth and development. Therefore, we would like to investigate the role science and technology play in these imbrications, the challenges they pose, and how these new assemblages reconfigure power relations between the Global North and the Global South within India, between States and markets.

  Des soins de santé centrés sur le patient : vers un nouveau paradigme dans la prise en charge en Haïti

  L’amélioration des soins de santé en Haïti est cruciale pour la société haïtienne. Le système actuel a des carences en termes de qualité des soins, de ressources, de personnel et de financement. Pour remédier à ces défis, il est nécessaire de repenser la façon dont les soins sont fournis à la population en adoptant une approche centrée sur le patient. Cela implique de prendre en compte les besoins, les préférences et les perspectives des patients, et de les inclure dans la prise de décision à chaque étape du parcours de soins. Cela peut améliorer les résultats pour les patients, améliorer la qualité des soins fournis aux patients et renforcer la collaboration entre les médecins et les patients. Ce colloque se veut donc être un espace d’échanges pour un nouveau paradigme dans la prise en charge des patients en Haïti.

En reconnaissance des immenses services qu’il a rendus à l’éducation, à l’enseignement et à la recherche, les anciens étudiants du professeur Thioub (dont certains sont devenus ses collègues au Sénégal, en Afrique, en Europe, et aux USA, alors que d’autres servent dans la haute administration sénégalaise, ou dans d’autres secteurs d’activités, et en partenariat avec l’Université Cheikh Anta Diop de Dakar) ont décidé d’organiser un colloque international afin de rendre hommage à leur mentor, d’honorer sa carrière d’enseignant, de chercheur émérite et d’administrateur de l’enseignement supérieur.

  Par cet appel, nous souhaitons d’une part solliciter des contributions portant sur les systèmes de santé tels qu’ils sont déterminés dans leur fonctionnement par leur appartenance à d’autres systèmes complexes. D’autre part, nous souhaitons ouvrir plus largement la réflexion sur « la santé des systèmes » au sens large. Cela suppose d’interroger ce que l’on peut entendre par la « santé » d’un système en particulier (économique, politique, de soins, etc.) ou en général, par exemple via un retour réflexif et/ou critique sur d’autres notions plus traditionnellement employées telles que la « performance ».

  Matières de la mort

  Le colloque « Matières de la mort » souhaite rassembler des chercheur·euses, principalement issu·es des sciences humaines et sociales, mais aussi des pratiques médicales et juridiques, pour interroger les liens contemporains entre la mort et la matérialité. Les cadavres et les charognes, les pratiques mortuaires et les techniques d’embaumement, les aspects matériels du deuil ou de la mort périnatale sont autant d’exemples qui cristallisent l’importance et la complexité de ces liens. Cette rencontre vise ainsi à mettre en lumière ce que le prisme de la matière donne à penser de la mort et des mort·es, et, à rebours, comment la mort et les mort·es rejouent et étoffent la compréhension de la matérialité. Il s’agira en somme de questionner l’inscription des matières de la mort dans la vie des vivant·es.

  This issue of Quaderni storici aims to focus on the transitional phase, so to speak, the one in which contagion emerges, manifests itself, and acts, causing sickness and death, but without yet being understood, nor known in its pathological characters, etiologies, and therapies. What are the social practices - including institutional practices in their contextual genesis - acting at this historical juncture in which the concrete experience of illness collides with the absence of terms and interpretations to counter it? What cultural and social processes are activated to deal with something that is both concretely active and culturally incomprehensible? How do these processes involve sexuality and the history of the way in which it has been thought of, signified, and governed?

  Mediaeval Latin Mathematics

  Methodos issue 25/2025, “Mediaeval Latin Mathematics”, welcomes studies and editions of mathematical texts from the Latin Middle Ages, a field which has received comparatively less scholarly attention than its Arabic counterpart or, for that matter, other disciplines within the Latin traditions (such as logic and dialectic, for instance). Insofar as Mediaeval mathematics encompassed not only arithmetics and geometry but also astronomy, music, optics and mechanics, the call for papers is open to studies which concern themselves with all mediaeval texts which, while they belong to other disciplines as well (natural and moral philosophy, theology, logic, etc.), rely heavily on mathematical lore and practice.

  La première journée du cycle (20 janvier 2023, Université Paris Cité) était consacrée à la manière dont le cinéma de fiction contemporain s’empare des nouvelles images produites par les sciences astronomiques et astrophysiques, telles qu’elles sont données à voir, des images de l’univers tel qu’il est rendu visible pour le public par l’imagerie scientifique. Dans la continuité de ce premier temps, il s’agira, dans cette deuxième journée, de partir cette fois de l’invisible. Comment les écrans, des salles d’exposition aux salles obscures, donnent-ils à voir et concevoir les objets et lois de l’univers qui échappent à la perception humaine ?
