  Mendicants on the margins

  A one-day symposium on the theme of “Mendicants on the Margins” will take place at University College Cork on the 27 June 2018. It is organised as part of the IRC-funded project “Spiritual Infrastructure, Space and Society: The Augustinian Friars in Late Medieval Ireland”. Speakers from Ireland and abroad will tackle a variety of aspects relating to the geenral theme on Mendicants on the Margins, from mendicant orders in geographical margins, the lesser-known orders such as the Augustinian friars, female communities and the Franciscan Third Order, to mendicant communities on the margins of the traditional model of urban mendicancy, such as foundations in non-urban environments, and aspects of mendicant studies challenging the traditional historiography of mendicant orders.

  The financial crisis of 2008 and its images in France

  Dix ans après le déclenchement de la crise financière de 2007-2008, dont les premières secousses se sont manifestées par le gel de trois fonds d’investissements à BNP Paribas en août 2007 et dont le point culminant a été atteint avec la faillite de Lehman Brothers en septembre 2008, une journée d’étude visera à rassembler les réflexions sur la représentation et la conceptualisation de la crise en France. La crise constitue un événement phare de notre histoire contemporaine, mais elle reste peut-être mal comprise. Organisée par l’Institut de recherche sur le cinéma et l’audiovisuel (IRCAV) à la Sorbonne Nouvelle Paris 3, cette journée d’étude permettra d’analyser la manière dont la crise a été mise en images.

  Research program about artificial specimens of the natural sciences at the Sorbonne (SPEscies)

  Cette conférence liée au programme de recherche en sciences humaines et sciences dures SPEscies (Spécimens artificiels de sciences naturelles en Sorbonne) est consacrée à la poétique de l’animalité dans la création contemporaine. Si, à partir de la seconde moitié du XIX^e siècle, le débat portant sur les rapports entre l’humanité et l’animalité est au cœur des préoccupations, la littérature et les beaux-arts sont des révélateurs de choix de l’inscription de l’animal dans la société. Anne Simon, directrice de recherche, spécialiste de littérature contemporaine, et Olivier Vayron doctorant en histoire de l’art contemporain présenteront leurs derniers travaux respectifs sur l’intégration du motif cynégétique dans la littérature, et sur l’apparition zoographique de la figure du gorille.

Le processus de patrimonialisation élargi à la prise en compte de la mémoire sociale pose la question des médiations sociales et culturelles qui permettent de la documenter, de la rendre visible et enfin de la transmettre au-delà de la communauté qui en est, ou s’en déclare, détentrice.

This special issue of Callaloo wishes to consider forms of performance that engage the legal apparatuses of colonialism as a site for critical thought and intervention in the political present. We wish to harness the enabling potential of the concept of “failing yet performing acts” for providing new understandings of performative interventions that confront histories of racial violence and imperial crimes despite disavowal, lack of official recognition, and absence of memorialization.

  Excess? Images of body, health, morality and emotions across the media

  A central goal of the workshop is to open up an international exchange and to connect perspectives from the history of science, the history of emotions, the history of the body and media history in order to shed new light on a history of health as a cultural history. The event is part of the research project “The Healthy Self as Body Capital: Individuals, Market-Based Societies, and Body Politics in Visual Twentieth Century Europe” funded by the European Research Council under the European Union's Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme (Advanced Grant agreement No 694817) led by Christian Bonah (University of Strasbourg) and Anja Laukötter (Max Planck Institute for Human Development, Berlin).

  The question of the relationship between enlightenment and revolution in the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries is a very old one. Since 2000, the study of both the age of enlightenment and the age of revolution have been renewed by simultaneous turns towards more transnational perspectives—often described as “Atlantic.” Yet relatively little attention has been paid to connecting these Atlantic visions of the enlightenment with new understandings of the Atlantic age of revolution, or to the related problem of integrating these Atlantic approaches with revolutionary historiographies that remain stubbornly national in orientation.

  This meeting aims to foster a discussion about the continuities and disruptions which have conditioned the multi-ethnic dimension of our cities. We would like to focus on the specificities of places and time in our millennial history that have produced both tangible and intangible cultural heritage (a heritage which today seems strongly under attack). We aim for a historical perspective –  by drawing attention on well-documented case-studies offering comparative insights – without however forgetting to ask ourselves the meaning of our research in the troubled world we live in; without anachronisms, but also without hiding behind the pretext of specialisms, while in front of our eyes the Mediterranean world is more than ever a theatre of death, exclusion, suffering.

  The vulgar in literature and the visual arts in the English-speaking world

  Que la notion de vulgaire relève aujourd'hui plus volontiers du jugement de valeur tend à occulter qu'il est aussi un marqueur social. Le vulgus désigne d'abord le commun des hommes, le grand nombre, la masse, la foule, les gens, le public, tout le monde. Et si une connotation péjorative affleure déjà dans certains emplois du mot latin, c'est à l'époque moderne qu'il devient un marqueur axiologique et tendancieux. En témoigne, en France, l'invention de la locution faussement latine « vulgum pecus », dont la première recension remonte à 1843, ou l'apparition, à l'ère victorienne, du terme « vulgarian » pour désigner le parvenu social. L'enjeu de cette journée d'étude sera de circonscrire différents usages de cette notion à travers l'histoire et les arts anglophones ; d'un simple descriptif à un marqueur de distinction sociale ou au contraire à un instrument de subversion politique, érigé en source de fierté.

Les deux institutions ont reçu en héritage le fruit de ses travaux et de ses recherches : le fonds parisien sera présenté à l’occasion du colloque, et le fonds lyonnais sera exposé à l’automne.

  Encounters: Arts, ecologies, transitions

  The project Arts, ecologies, transitions. Building a common reference wishes to accompany certain notable developments in the field of the arts as well as theoretical discourse on art and which, rejecting the confinement of art to the realm of ‘civilizational oversupply’, are attentive to questions arising from current ecological, economic and social crises as well as the crisis of representation we also currently experiencing. As part of this project, a call for papers is hereby launched for two symposia entitled Encounters: Arts, Ecologies, Transitions. These symposia will focus on current proposals dealing with radical positionings of the artistic ‘transition’, in which the ecological shift is generating new artistic forms, practices and works.
