  Actors and Vehicles of Architectural Criticism

  Architectural Criticism 20th and 21st Centuries, a Cartography

  This second international workshop takes into consideration the actors and the vehicles of criticism: with these terms it refers to both the agents of criticism (critics, architects, historians, publishers, photographers, institutions, etc.) and the media through which criticism is disseminated (press, photography, exhibitions, etc.). The workshop aims to expand the knowledge about the specific functions of these actors and their networks and to outline their mutual relationships. The four sessions investigate the links between the actors, the media of criticism, and the historical contexts within which they materialize, as well as the cultural, intellectual, and institutional milieus from which they originate.

  The individual and his body in the Ancient Mediterranean basin

  Le corps d’un individu relie celui-ci aux autres membres de sa communauté, il constitue un support physique commode pour interagir avec eux. Sans corps, pas de sens ; sans sens, pas de communication possible. Toutefois, le corps sépare aussi l’individu de ses contemporains : par ses particularismes innés ou acquis, il le différencie des autres. Il est donc à la fois un facteur de cohésion et de discrimination sociale. Cette problématique, très explorée en anthropologie sociale, a été presque complètement ignorée dans les études sur le Proche-Orient cunéiforme. En hittitologie, seule la lexicographie des parties du corps humain a été étudiée jusqu’à présent.

  Ships of the desert

  The presence and uses of the camel (Camelus dromedarius) between the Tigris and the Nile in the middle 1st millenium

  Le dromadaire ou chameau à une bosse (Camelus dromedarius) n’est pas une espèce autochtone en Égypte, ni même au Proche-Orient ou dans la péninsule Arabique. L’animal, surnommé « vaisseau des déserts », est pourtant particulièrement bien adapté aux environnements arides et semi-arides de ces régions. Il a des utilisations multiples (transport de charge, transport de personnes, labour, course, consommation humaine etc.), mais son élevage est délicat et requiert un savoir-faire précis. Il a donc semblé opportun de réunir pour la première fois des philologues, des archéologues et des archéozoologues, spécialistes de leur discipline, pour confronter les informations et tenter de mieux cerner l’histoire du Camelus dromedarius, de son élevage et de ses utilisations dans les déserts d’Égypte, du Proche-Orient et de la péninsule Arabique, du milieu du I^er millénaire av. J.-C. à l’époque romaine.

  Women and social and politica changes in Arab countries

  Les mouvements sociaux qui ont secoué les pays arabes, depuis 2011, n’ont cessé d’interpeler les chercheurs sur les enjeux et les perspectives liés aux changements survenus sur les plans politique et social. Leur impact, sur les rapports sociaux de genre et les représentations qui les sous-tendent, mérite d’être analysé. En effet, les femmes des pays arabes sont particulièrement touchées par ces changements et cela est visible à travers leur présence active dans les mouvements sociaux. Elles jouent un rôle relativement important comme vectrices de modernisation dans la société. Le renversement de certains régimes n’aurait pas été possible sans l’insurrection des masses urbaines et dont la mobilisation des femmes a été un facteur important. Défiant certains tabous et stéréotypes, elles se sont imposées comme actrices des « révolutions arabes », non seulement en prenant part à la contestation, mais et en la nourrissant.

  Art History for Artists: Interactions Between Scholarly Discourse and Artistic Practice in the 19th Century

  The development of art history as a discipline during the 19^th century has been variously associated with the politics of national identity, the needs of a growing bourgeois public in search of cultural capital, or of an expanding art market. However, the role of art training, and art practitioners themselves in the shaping of the discipline remains unexamined. Courses in art history had been systematically introduced in the curricula of art and architecture academies since the late 18^th century, and spaces of art education count among the first institutional homes of the discipline, well before the establishment of autonomous university chairs. This conference aims to explore the interactions and productive tensions between art practice and art scholarship in the 19^th century.

  Appropriating Space in Colonial and Imperial Contexts

  Since their renewal in the 1980s, colonial and imperial studies have often focused on cultural representations and social practices. More recently, scholars have shown increased interest in the spatial dimensions of colonial phenomena, producing thematic atlases and analyzing imperial cartographies. Using the concept of appropriation, this call for papers seeks to stimulate further research on concrete connections between human interactions and spatial transformation in colonial and imperial settings. This multidisciplinary international conference will focus on modern (post)colonial and imperial spaces (19^th–21^st century), including both urban and rural environments. We aim at decrypting complex dynamics of spatial appropriation and their impact upon social relations. How does the radical transformation of a particular space impinge upon resource accessibility and use, local human experience and the construction of social identities?

  L’actualité médiatique relative aux désastres de la crise politique au Proche-Orient insiste particulièrement sur les offenses faites aux patrimoines : utilisation de sites archéologiques comme bases stratégiques ou lieux d’atteinte à la vie humaine, pillages, dégradations, voire destructions massives. Dépassant, et l’état des lieux connu des destructions en Syrie et en Irak, et la question des difficultés pratiques à se rendre sur place (risque sécuritaire, baisse du nombre de visas délivrés, etc.), cette journée d’étude de troisième cycle de l'École du Louvre souhaite soulever les conséquences de la crise politique et de sa médiatisation sur les études des objets et sites archéologiques du Proche-Orient menées par des archéologues, historiens de l'art ou conservateurs.

  La thématique des séminaires est l’émergence de l’identité humaine. Elle suit l’actualité des découvertes dans l’esprit naturaliste du Muséum national d’histoire naturelle, inséparable des longues durées qui se déclinent en évolution de l’organisation interne des espèces, adaptations, migrations, endémismes, extinctions. En 2015, la préhistoire a connu de grandes avancées en Afrique (Éthiopie, Kenya) mais aussi en Asie (Inde, Chine) constatant des activités de type anthropique à la transition plio-pléistocène. Les questions émergentes font appel à une interdisciplinarité toujours plus élargie, avec comme fil directeur, la recherche des processus évolutifs en contexte écologique.

  The Bible in Arabic in the 19th century: the issues for Christianity ad Islam in the Near East since 1865

  La publication en 1865 de la traduction complète de la Bible en arabe à Beyrouth, accompagnée de sa large diffusion, sous l’égide des missionnaires de l’American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions (ABCFM) avec le concours de savants du Liban, reste une étape charnière de l’histoire religieuse et intellectuelle du Proche Orient. Les conséquences de cette traduction dépassent outre, en effet, le champ du religieux et du théologique pour atteindre l’Homme et son rôle dans la société : le politique au sens large. Que cette traduction ait été menée à bonne fin peut alors être perçu comme le signe d’une société en évolution, d’autant plus que des musulmans ont été appelés à y collaborer aux côtés de chrétiens.

  Regionalisation and governance

  La nouvelle structuration politico-administrative de la Tunisie née de la constitution de 2014 implique un nouveau mode d’organisation et de gestion territoriale, ce qui représente un champ de réflexion pour les géographes mais aussi pour plusieurs autres disciplines, sur la gouvernance territoriale. Cette question de gouvernance territoriale est en étroite relation avec les questions de régionalisation des territoires et de leurs développements. L’enjeu est désormais de savoir comment, – dans un contexte de transition démocratique et de mise en place de nouveaux instruments législatifs et institutionnels –, les responsables politiques, les divers acteurs et les chercheurs considèrent la problématique de la gouvernance territoriale. Ce colloque propose de réfléchir sur la nouvelle gouvernance des territoires régionaux et locaux et sur les enjeux qui déterminent aujourd’hui la mise en place de cette gouvernance et les contraintes qui l’entravent.
