  Summer Course for the Study of the Arts in Flanders

  Annually, the Summer Course brings a select group of 18 national and international, highly qualified young researchers to Flanders. They are offered an intensive 11-day programme of lectures, discussions, and visits related to a specific art historical period of Flemish art. The Summer Course provides the participants with a clear insight into the Flemish art collections from the period at hand, as well as into the current state of research on the topic.The 5th edition of the Summer Course will focus on ‘The Age of Bruegel in Context’. It will be held from June 23 until July 3, 2019. Excursions will be made to Antwerp, Bruges, Genk, Leuven, Mechelen and Brussels. We are also planning a trip to Paris. The language of the Summer Course is English.

  The Hydraulics in Monumental Buildings

  The hydraulic system is an architectural subsystem that can only be understood in view of the dual constitution of its structure: one at ground level, that referrers to potable water (lower hydraulic subsystem), and other concerning rainwater (upper hydraulic subsystem). They both involve aspects of major importance for the functioning of any building: catchment, distribution and evacuation of the waters. In the last decade, research was carried out on the hydraulic component of historical architecture, either religious or civil, considering technical and artistic issues, not only in Portugal, but throughout Europe.

  Ambrogio Spinola: between Genoa, Flanders and Spain

  Networks and Narratives, War and Finances (1569-1639)

  This international workshop proposes a collective work at the crossroads of the different economic, political, family, military and cultural networks which constituted the changing and complex context of the life of Ambrogio Spinola, a man of immense fortune and unknown military qualities. His framework? Italy, Flanders, Spain. Scholars with different, although complementary, historiographical approaches will gather around Spinola, aiming to publish a collective biography in 2020. This biography will be the result of an interdisciplinary work, mixing the knowledge of historians of the military, diplomacy, aristocracy or economics, but also using the history of news (creation and circulation), written and pictorial culture, or gender history.

  Photography, with or without capitalism

  Dès son invention, la photographie s’est trouvée en prise avec les développements du capitalisme : non seulement son expansion dans les années 1870 fut dépendante des développements de l’industrie, mais elle fut aussi l’apanage de la bourgeoisie tout en servant sa reconnaissance symbolique. Ce rapport de contemporanéité, qui traverse l’histoire de la photographie et lui dicte en partie ses fluctuations, constitue presque un ethos de la photographie, s’observant sans discontinuité jusqu’à nos jours, où la question des flux s’applique tant à la circulation de l’argent qu’à celle des images. La photographie est, depuis ses débuts, une image qui répond de la logique libérale. En partant de ce constat, nous pouvons nous demander si les développements esthétiques de la photographie peuvent être gouvernés d’une manière ou d’une autre par son revers économique. Tant sur le mode de la connivence que sur celui de la résistance, il apparaît que bien des tendances formelles découlent de sa familiarité avec la logique capitaliste ou y répondent.

  X-ray of violence in Peru in the post-war

  15 years of the Commission of Truth and Reconciliation: appraisals and perspectives

  De longue date, la France a accueilli nombre de rencontres sur la violence politique et ses enjeux mémoriels dans les pays latino-américains. Nous proposons ici la première manifestation académique sur le cas péruvien en France. Ce colloque vise à questionner l’impact du rapport final de la Commission de la Vérité et Réconciliation (CVR) en tant que grand récit « officiel » du conflit armé au Pérou. Dans une perspective pluridisciplinaire, il s’agira d’analyser les répercussions des recommandations de la CVR et d’interroger « l’actualité » du conflit armé dans la société péruvienne. Pour mener à bien ce projet, nous avons souhaité faire dialoguer différents espaces, approches et disciplines faisant écho à ce sujet : notre réflexion s’articule ainsi au croisement de l’anthropologie, de la sociologie, de l’histoire, de l’archéologie et de la littérature.

  Éliane Beaufils, du département d’études théâtrales organise le vendredi 14 décembre 2018 de 9h-18h un colloque intitulé « Le théâtre face à l’avenir climatique ». Ce colloque étudie des formes théâtrales et performantielles qui traitent de la catastrophe climatique. Il cherchera à analyser comment les scènes confrontent les spectateurs à de nouvelles relations interhumaines et interspécifiques, et comment elles les appellent à l’action et/ou à l’imagination du futur. Les voies d’une scène politique écologique, une scène climapolitique, se dessinent-elles ?

  Food and territorial politics. Policies for food and territories

  Food is, with a few exceptions, a relatively understudied object through the lens of local policymaking and urban planning. On the one hand, the sociology of food focuses on the relations that individuals and social groups develop to food deeds, as well as the social relations that food deeds generate between them. On the other hand, studies of food policies in political sociology primarily deal with the agrofood industry and the social movements around alternative modes of production. By contrast, few studies take as a research object food through the lens of agenda-setting in local public policy and its potential effects on territories.

  Rereading L'Automne du Moyen Âge by Johan Huizinga today

  Loué par les uns pour ses fulgurances, l’originalité de ses centres d’intérêts, la nouvelle histoire des idées qu’il dessina en faisant prendre à son exploration des hommes et de leur temps le chemin des rêves et des espoirs, des rires et des larmes, le grand historine néerlandais, Johan Huizinga, est aussi critiqué pour sa subjectivité, le caractère invérifiable de ses sources, ses flous chronologiques, sa vision que l’on pourrait qualifier « impressionniste » de l’histoire. Cent ans après la parution du Herfsttij, dans le sillon des Annales, après les vagues du Linguistic Turn des années 60 et du Cultural Turn des années 80, il paraît opportun pour les historiens, littéraires et historiens de l’art de dresser un premier bilan des apports de ce livre fondamental qu'est l'Automne du Moyne Âge, qui permit de placer les représentations, les symboles et les sentiments au cœur de l’enquête historique.

  Deconstructing "colonial archives" - issues, practices and contemporary debates

  Study day at the Archives nationales d'Outre-mer (Aix-en-Provence)

  Cette journée d’étude, organisée par le Groupe de recherche sur les ordres coloniaux (GROC) à Aix-en-Provence le vendredi 28 juin 2019, a pour objectif d’alimenter une réflexion à la fois épistémologique, théorique et pratique sur les usages des archives coloniales. Elle aura lieu au cœur d’une institution centrale pour les recherches portant sur le passé colonial français et le passé de nombreux autres pays : les Archives nationales d'Outre-mer (ANOM). Elle permettra ainsi de faire dialoguer les approches archivistes et historiennes, autour de trois axes de réflexion principaux : « Qu'est-ce qu'une archive coloniale ? » ; « Comment articulier l'“archive coloniale” à d'autres archives ? » ; « Les “archives coloniales” comme lieux d'histoire et de mémoire ». En plus des panels de discussions, cette journée d'étude prévoit une présentation des ANOM et de certains de ses fonds par les archivistes de l'institution.

  Rebuilding / Restoring Rome

  The Renewal of Buildings and Spaces as Urban Policy, from Antiquity to the Present

  Everywhere in Rome, monuments are covered with ancient or modern inscriptions that not only contain the name of the original builder but also commemorate their restoration. Popes from the Quattrocento and Cinquecento who acted as urban planners, such as Sixtus IV, presented themselves as ‘restorers’, even when they were actually modernising the City. This phenomenon is not restricted to the Renaissance period: many Roman emperors already claimed to be rebuilders, such as Augustus who repaired all the damaged temples of Rome according to the Res Gestae, or Septimius Severus who was called Restitutor Vrbis on his coinage. Rome thus seems to be a city that constantly needs to be restored, rebuilt, born again. This conference aims to investigate how the notions of restoration and rebuilding were a driving force of Rome’s urban transformation throughout its history, from Antiquity to the 21^st century, as well as a political program put forward by the authorities and an ideal more or less shared by the different key actors of the city.

  Reshaping the Nation

  Collective Identities and Post-War Violence in Europe 1944–1948

  The conference will analyze the composition of nationalities (who belonged to the national community?), the legitimizing function of nationalism, and its relation to acts of violence at the end of war and to the reshaping of postwar societies. At the same time, we want to address the differences between countries. How did a specific occupation policy in a specific place, with its specific national and racist criteria, influence the “responses” of the occupied society? Is there any evidence of a biological understanding of nationhood? How did competing concepts shape a new understanding of the “nation”—particularly taking into consideration the different political and cultural developments in various nation-states after the war ended? We are interested in papers that touch upon violent acts occurring at the end of World War II and stemming from nationalism as reshaped by previous war experiences.

  Reason and rational modes of thought are often seen as the bastion against the acceleration of conflict into violence and the goal of the Enlightenment tradition was, in a large part, to liberate individuals from those irrational superstitions and beliefs which were at the base of these conflicts. However, many critiques of the Enlightenment project, both historical and more contemporary, see the imposition of universal reason as itself a form violence, ignoring claims of comprehensive traditions, identity and history on the individual. The aim of this special edition of the Philosophical Journal of Conflict and Violence is to examine possible counter-enlightenment approaches to violence, conflict and conflict resolution.

  Cette section thématique cherche à saisir ce que l'intersectionnalité fait – ou ne fait pas – aux pratiques militantes et les effets que celles-ci, en retour, peuvent avoir sur ce cadre conceptuel. Son enjeu de est de permettre le croisement entre des champs de recherche qui discutent encore peu dans les sciences sociales francophones, à savoir la sociologie des mouvements sociaux et celle des rapports sociaux de genre, classe et race, alors que les travaux sont pourtant foisonnant de part et d’autre. Cette section thématique encourage des communications portant sur différentes formes d'engagement militant dans différents contextes nationaux et internationaux, mobilisant les méthodes d'enquête des sciences sociales mais aussi des perspectives de théorie politique.

  The worlds of 1848

  Des révolutions de 1848 et du « printemps des peuples », tout semble avoir été dit. On en connaît les chronologies, les discontinuités, les espoirs, les luttes, les flux et les reflux. La dimension transnationale de la « plus européenne des révolutions du XIX^e siècle » a été maintes fois soulignée. Pourtant, alors que l’âge des révolutions (années 1770-1840) est de plus en plus pensé à l’échelle globale, et que la domination coloniale et informelle de l’Europe croît dans la première moitié du siècle, la dimension globale de 1848 reste relativement méconnue. Ce colloque international, qui coïncide avec le 170^e anniversaire de la Révolution de 1848, entend faire le point sur les dimensions coloniale, impériale et globale du moment révolutionnaire qui entoure 1848. Aussi entend-il exhumer et identifier les « mondes de 1848 », dans leur pluralité.

  The emergence of video art in Europe: Historiography, theory, sources and archives (1960-1980)

  À ce jour, à l’échelle de l’Europe, une histoire de l’art vidéo demeure donc à faire. C’est la mission à laquelle le présent programme de recherche entend répondre. Un réseau international, regroupant à la fois des historiens de l’art et de l’image en mouvement, des artistes, des protagonistes de cette aventure, des dépositaires de fonds d’archives, des conservateurs et de jeunes chercheurs, s’est constitué. Il a pour objectif de collecter des données sur les artistes, les œuvres et les événements qui ont permis l’avènement de cette pratique, ou qui ont compté dans son développement sur le territoire européen, et de mettre au jour les conditions nationales spécifiques de production et de diffusion permettant d'expliquer la variété des productions comme la disparité des périodes d'émergences (1960-1980).
