Border Textures: Interwoven Practices and Discursive Fabrics of Borders
2nd World Conference of the Association for Borderlands Studies - Panel
In view of the current political developments in Europe, the scientific study of borders has increasingly gained importance. Cultural Studies has reacted to these developments by generating complex and more and more detailed theories and tools for describing and analyzing border phenomena. Cultural border studies champion approaches which do not examine spatial, material, temporal or cultural aspects in isolation but investigate their intersectional and performative interactions. This panel provides a space for explorative investigation of potential approaches for cultural border studies, focusing on interactions between material and immaterial manifestations of the border.

The societal events of the last decade have challenged Border Studies more than ever before. This can be seen not only in the field’s growing institutionalisation but also in its developments in research: these include the relativization of geopolitical perspectives by cultural studies approaches, the spatialisation of the border concept (e.g. zone, third space, exter/internalisation etc.), the decentralisation of the border in favour of processes (e.g. b/ordering, othering etc.), the pluralisation of the border concept (e.g. walls, differences, (dis)continuities, demarcations) or the complexification of the border (e.g. scapes, textures). The panel is treating these developments and other turns as an opportunity for a long-overdue self-examination, which in the light of the resurgence of borders seems necessary from both a societal and scientific perspective.

Field philosophy and other experiments
This colloquium will bring together leading and emerging scholars to discuss, share, and analyze what similarities and differences there are between their respective humanities research projects, as conducted in the field, and to experiment with what new field practices might emerge from the humanities. How are field practices in the environmental humanities methodologically different from those in cultural anthropology, geography, or sociology? How might field research in philosophy reshape traditionally text-based disciplinary boundaries?

Above all, the call for papers emphasizes the correlation between hospitality and space. Jacques Godbout, in his article "Receiving is to give", specifies that hospitality is a "gift of space". So what are the characteristics of these given spaces? Are they permanent, temporary or transitional? Are there inherent areas of hospitality? And how are they built? From hospitals to home, what are these spaces and what is their spatial nature? And what meaning of hospitality do these spaces convey? What kind of space does hospitality produce?

Enjeux politiques et culturels des mises en scène des scences
Ce séminaire se focalise sur l’analyse de l’articulation entre sciences, politique de la science et vulgarisation. Croisant l’histoire des sciences, l’histoire culturelle, la muséologie, l’histoire politique et l’histoire économique, nous chercherons à comprendre comment les conceptions, toujours historiquement et géographiquement situées, des sciences et de leurs rôles sont acculturées dans leur espace de référence et à quelles fins. Nous nous focaliserons moins sur les approches institutionnelles que sur les artefacts, expositions et musées de sciences considérés comme la matérialisation, à un moment donné, d’une conception prédominante des sciences et de leurs rôles. Nous chercherons également à inscrire les questionnements très contemporains liés aux mutations profondes qui affectent actuellement les institutions de recherche, d’enseignement supérieur et de médiation des sciences dans une perspective historique (19e et 20e siècles).

South Asian Diasporic Cinema: Encounters
The fourth issue of /DESI/ will focus on the question of encounters in diasporic South Asian cinema: Afghanistan, India, Maldives, Pakistan, Bangladesh Nepal and Sri Lanka. The transformation of this contemporary human condition into filmic material coincides with a turn in the scientific study of diasporas. Forced migrations, which generate a movement of displacement and settlement in home territories, movements of arrivals, caught in a logic of deterritorialization, diasporas – and more particularly South Asian diasporas – are all relocated in transnational and transcultural spaces. Cinema holds a mirror to this experience of movement through this new “ethnoscape” (Appadurai) made up of shifts and disjunctures, free flows and political hurdles, border-crossings and assignment of identity.

Ce colloque international entend saisir, dans leurs aspects et formes multiples, les dynamiques dialectiques de la mémoire et de l’oubli, sur le temps long, ainsi que les phénomènes de patrimonialisation dans un contexte d’absence des Juifs ou de délitement de la présence juive dans différents pays. Il s’agit ici, dans une perspective comparative, de croiser les regards et les expériences, à partir des différents cas des communautés juives, qui apparaissent ici comme une sorte de « laboratoire » pour comprendre les reconstructions des passés, leur poids dans les formes urbaines, dans les représentations et les historiographies, leurs effets sur la recomposition des frontières entre groupes sociaux et sur l’effritement de certains d’entre eux, sur place ou en exil.

Strategies and recognition techniques in the field of design and the decorative arts
Dans le domaine de la recherche, la question d’un design à la fois comme champ disciplinaire et sujet à interroger, se pose avec acuité. Malgré l’engouement dont il fait l’objet au quotidien, le design – et les domaines rattachés industrie, industrie d’art, artisanat entre autres – reste encore très largement à identifier, explorer et qualifier. La notion est encore difficile à cerner et demande toujours à être définie tant sur le plan historique, esthétique ou encore économique et sociologique. C’est le sens du colloque Stratégies et dispositifs de reconnaissance dans le champ du design et des arts décoratifs.

Rehabilitating transnational cultural assets in Europe - Strasbourg municipal baths (1908/10)
Perspectives for documentation and future exploitation
Les bains municipaux de Strasbourg (1908/10) sont un parimoine culturel transnational d'un genre unique au monde. Fleuron de la politique sociale très progressiste de la municipalité alsacienne au temps du Reichsland allemand, ils comprennent deux bassins, des bains-douches, des bains romains, ainsi qu'une aile médicale. Restés quasiment intacts durant leur service ininterrompu depuis plus de cent ans, ils doivent subir une rénovation importante afin de pouvoir continuer à fonctionner. Au moment où la Ville de Strasbourg discute de la meilleure façon pour préparer ce patrimoine pour l'avenir, une perspective franco-allemande a pour objectif d'esquisser des perspectives d'action sur le fonds de rénovations qui ont déjà eu lieu en Allemagne.

La revue en ligne de sciences humaines et sociales ethnographiques.org accueille des contributions d’étudiants ou de chercheurs en vue d’enrichir une réflexion théorique, méthodologique et réflexive sur les pratiques ethnographiques. Les travaux de disciplines proches (sociologie, histoire, géographie…) s’inscrivant dans ce projet sont également les bienvenus. Nous accordons en outre une place importante à l’utilisation de nouvelles techniques de restitution qui obligent à repenser le rendu du terrain ethnographique. Ce numéro sera consacré au thème « Revenir. Quêtes, enquêtes et retrouvailles ».

The Shoah in Ukraine - new perspectives on the misfortunes of the 20th century
Nouvelles perspectives sur les malheurs du XXe siècle
Le but de ce colloque est d’approfondir la connaissance et de mettre en débat une histoire encore mal connue en raison de la censure historiographique et mémorielle exercée par le régime soviétique. La Shoah en URSS, en particulier en Ukraine a fait l’objet de travaux récents novateurs, notamment sur les pratiques des Nazis et sur les attitudes des sociétés locales à l’égard des Juifs et leurs conséquences : collaborateurs soviétiques de la Shoah, attitude des institutions et des groupes sociaux et politiques (nationalistes, communistes, églises, etc.) à l’égard des Juifs et de la Shoah, pendant et après l’extermination. Le colloque réunira une trentaine chercheurs Français et Ukrainiens, mais aussi Américains, Hollandais, Israéliens. Il est ouvert au public.

Actualities and new perspectives in social science research
Homelessness, has been recognized as a public problem, not only by international organizations, but also by the national and local authorities from many countries. Homelessness became also a scientific problem. Many generations of researchers conducted inquiries among homeless people. They analysed the phenomenon of homelessness in a longer history of the treatment of poverty in the occidental societies. They were also able to describe the survival on the streets, the different configurations of support, the social violence against homeless people, the construction of social problem during different eras, etc. This congress wishes to offer a space for exchange in order to develop new perspectives in the field of homelessness research.

La problématique de la colonisation sera abordée du double point de vue des colonisés et des colonisateurs. Le numéro, ouvert aux des différentes sciences humaines, se concentrera sur l’ex-Empire français aux XIXe et XXe siècles. L’aspect socio-anthropologique sera attentif aux contingences sociétales historiques. Mais plus encore il s’attachera aux ressentis anthropologiques, symboliques des acteurs individuels et collectifs en s’appuyant sur les récits des agents de la colonisation comme sur les témoignages des colonisés.

The Other Half of Communism: Women's Outlook
“History of Communism in Europe” Journal, no. 8/ 2017
This issue looks to include the most recent scholarship on women and their intricate relations with the communist parties in Europe, during the XXth century. While including the valuable scholarship on “exceptional” personalities such as Alexandra Kollontai, Inessa Armand or Dolores Ibarruri, this issue aims to explore the voices of women that by political choice or simply historical tournaments found themselves as both objects and subjects of the communist parties. The political evolution of Europe through the century, the existence of USSR and the national (illegal) branches affiliated to the Communist International, and later of an Eastern Bloc determined completely different experiences, forms of activism and sociability. This issue of History of Communism in Europe aims to follow the relation between communism and women before and after the Second World War, on the both sides of the Iron Curtain.

Theme issue of the journal Études arméniennes contemporaines (EAC n° 8 – Decembre 2017)
The history of the large-scale massacres committed against the Armenians under the reign of Sultan Abdülhamid II, in 1894-1896, is still largely unknown, its sources underutilized or not studied at all. This period of extreme violence, a watershed in the political and social history of the Ottoman Empire, raises many questions about the similarities and differences with the genocidal process of 1915-1916. We invite submissions on a broad range of topics and disciplinary approaches for this special issue. Relevant studies may include chronological analyses of the events of the 1890s themselves, as well as analyses of the consequences of that era of violence up to the present day. At the heart of this issue lies the question of the precedent: what links can be established between the genocide and the mass crimes that preceded it – an issue relevant to the study of other twentieth-century genocides.
