Architecture and decorative arts in the Maghreb and Middle East (19th-20th centuries)
Que les contours en aient été déterminés par la colonisation, par des « modernités indigènes », par les conditions de la guerre froide ou désormais par le système de la « starchitecture », l’architecture et les arts qui lui sont liés sur les pourtours sud et est méditerranéens, et au-delà dans la Péninsule arabique, constituent un vaste champ d’étude encore largement en friche.

Theme issue of the journal Études arméniennes contemporaines (EAC n° 8 – Decembre 2017)
The history of the large-scale massacres committed against the Armenians under the reign of Sultan Abdülhamid II, in 1894-1896, is still largely unknown, its sources underutilized or not studied at all. This period of extreme violence, a watershed in the political and social history of the Ottoman Empire, raises many questions about the similarities and differences with the genocidal process of 1915-1916. We invite submissions on a broad range of topics and disciplinary approaches for this special issue. Relevant studies may include chronological analyses of the events of the 1890s themselves, as well as analyses of the consequences of that era of violence up to the present day. At the heart of this issue lies the question of the precedent: what links can be established between the genocide and the mass crimes that preceded it – an issue relevant to the study of other twentieth-century genocides.

La Grande-Bretagne occupe une position privilégiée dans cette région qu’elle contribue à définir et à redéfinir à mesure qu’elle y développe un « empire par traités » au début du vingtième siècle et après la première guerre mondiale.

Europe-Arab relations (19th-21st centuries)
On sait que la péninsule Arabique et l'Europe entretiennent depuis longtemps des relations durables, tant économiques que culturelles. Dans la poursuite des activités de la Chaire de dialogue des cultures sur l'histoire de ces relations depuis l'Antiquité et le Moyen Âge, ce colloque international s'intéressera plus spécifiquement aux liens entre l'Europe et la péninsule Arabique à l'époque contemporaine, depuis les débuts de la mondialisation de l'âge industriel jusqu'aux derniers développements économiques et stratégiques contemporains. Leur comparaison ainsi que l'étude du contenu et de l'évolution des échanges sont un moyen de mieux comprendre ce qui relie l'Europe et la péninsule Arabique.

Modernizers: Changing science and society in the Middle East and North Africa (1870s-1930s)
Re-constructing a local genealogy of the scientific modernization in North Africa and the Middle East is still a pending task. Research on modern Arab-Islamic scientists, physicians and engineers will help expand the collective memory of modernization in those countries by adding new, often badly-known or forgotten actors to its ranks. Biographies will also help illuminate the intrinsic connection existing between science and society, showing how science has always been a necessary element in plans for national independence, social change and democratic rule. This conference will focus on the biographies of some late 19th-early 20th century scientists from Morocco, Egypt, Turkey, Iraq, Iran and Syria

Typography and graphism of Arabic writing: issues and perspectives
Cet après-midi d’étude a pour objectif de discuter des enjeux actuels de la typographie de la lettre arabe, à une échelle internationale et à la lumière des expériences passées. Témoins, historiens, artistes, praticiens et enseignants y dialogueront autour des projets de réforme de l’écriture et de renouvellement de la typographie arabe, hier et aujourd’hui, ainsi que des propositions esthétiques qui leur sont liées. On y analysera les résistances aux propositions nouvelles mais aussi les appuis qu’elles trouvent, et les raisons de l’intérêt que la lettre arabe suscite actuellement auprès des graphistes, qu’ils travaillent sur des textes en langue arabe ou non.

À travers une approche interdisciplinaire – mobilisant l’histoire, la géographie, le droit, la science politique et la sociologie –, il s’agira aussi bien de questionner la notion d’État que d’analyser les différents cas de figure, aussi bien au Maghreb qu’au Machrek. Si l’État n’a pas le monopole de l’organisation de la vie en société, sa disparition laisse souvent place à un chaos qui menace les régions voisines. De ce point de vue, la question dépasse le cadre initial que constitue le monde arabe.

Experts and expertise in the mandates and of the society of nations
Figures, fields and tools
Our vantage point is to consider the growing in importance of expertise during the twentieth century within the management of the colonial world and hence to study the emergence of the international sphere as a level of decision making. The purpose of this conference is to investigate the influence of early international agendas, advanced across the colonial world by experts operating in the orbit of international organizations. The investigation should also focus on the procedures and framework of international recognition of expertise at the intersection of the colonial and the international spheres. A first line of enquiry tackles the relations between the epistemologies that underpinned scientific knowledge in the colony and the metropolis. Another one looks into the sites of production of Mandatory expertise. Finally, we want to investigate the explicitly evolutionary conceptual framework for the mandates and its influence on the work of experts. We invite contributions dealing with the figure of the expert, whether official or not, and the various fields and tools of Mandatory expertise. Part and parcel of our reflexion is also a study of the limits and scope of expertise.

Workshop in the framework of the GIS conference - the Middle East and Muslim worlds, 2015
L’analyse des œuvres plastiques élaborées par des artistes modernes et contemporains dans les sociétés du Maghreb et du Moyen Orient depuis le XIXe siècle, de leurs formes, mais aussi des conditions de leur production et des modalités de leur réception, reste aujourd’hui un domaine relativement peu exploré, malgré les perspectives qu'elle ouvre pour comprendre ces sociétés. La lecture de ces œuvres permet de saisir des discours révélateurs du rapport que les acteurs sociaux entretiennent avec leur passé et leur présent. Nous proposons dans cet atelier d’explorer cette question à travers l’idée, issue de la sémiologie visuelle, que l’image s’appréhende sur le modèle du texte, « dans la mesure où ses constituants (et leur distribution dans l’espace de la représentation), sollicite[nt] de la part du spectateur une série d’ajustements [propres à] la lecture ».

Movements and flows in the Arabian Peninsula, the Red Sea and the Gulf region during World War I
Special issue of Arabian Humanities n° 6
On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of WWI, Arabian Humanities is launching an issue on the history of the Arabian Peninsula, the Red Sea and the Gulf during the Great War. Focus on movements and flows in/from/to the Red Sea, the Arabian Peninsula and the Gulf is meant to question the marginal position and isolation of the region during the war, to assess spatial and territorial reorganizations affecting movements and exchanges, and to give further attention to the region's global connections. What are the exchanges that can be identified during this period both in the region and in a global context? To what extent did the war impact on such flows in a region where borders and frontiers were still porous, ill-defined and fought over?

Appel à contribution pour un colloque international co-organisé par l’association Richie, l’UMR IRICE, l’Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne et l’Université Paris 3 Sorbonne Nouvelle. L'objectif de ce colloque est d'enrichir l'historiographie des relations entre l'Europe de l'Est et les pays riverains de la Méditerranée. La périodisation proposée s’étend de 1967 à 1989 et prend en compte les seules relations politiques, diplomatiques et économiques entre l’Est de l’Europe et la Méditerranée, que ce soit de manière bilatérale ou multilatérale. -

Time and temporality in the Arab world, 19th-21st centuries
Si la question du temps et des temporalités est revenue au centre des interrogations des sciences sociales et humaines, qu’elle a prouvé son caractère heuristique et son actualité, elle n’a jusqu’alors que très peu été mobilisée dans l’étude des sociétés arabes, et dans celle des sociétés non occidentales en général. Ce numéro de Temporalités entend donc ouvrir un nouveau champ d’exploration et de réflexion, de dresser un premier inventaire des travaux interrogeant la notion de temporalité dans l’espace arabe, sur la période contemporaine, soit du XIXe siècle à nos jours. Il a vocation à rassembler des études inédites, mais également des travaux proposant une relecture de certains thèmes au prisme des temporalités.
