  Undertaking and translating culture. The study of Amerindian cases

  En el mundo contemporáneo indígena y amazónico especialmente, observamos desde hace algún tiempo nuevas maneras de mostrarse o darse a ver, a veces a través de un intercambio de servicios o una prestación cultural, que remite a formas empresariales poco investigadas como el ecoturismo comunitario, la danza folklórica, la gastronomía indígena, la empresa comunitaria, entre otros. Para difundir esta oferta, los modos de comunicación modernos utilizados son variados: videos, blogs, redes sociales, etc., que incluyen escrituras diversas. A partir de estudios de casos etnográficos precisos, nos interrogaremos sobre la relación entre las formas de mostración indígena y los contextos económico, social y político en los que emergen; los contenidos expuestos y sus formas; los actores involucrados en estos procesos; y lo que es un empresario indígena hoy en día. El objetivo de este panel es el de presentar las premisas de una investigación sobre estos problemas emergentes.

  American public diplomacy in the Middle-East

  The inverted pyramid paradigm? Genesis, institutions, strategies and reception

  Politique Américaine, a political science journal published in French on US domestic politics and international strategies launches a call for papers for its special issue on: "American Public Diplomacy in the Middle-East: the inverted pyramid paradigm? Genesis, Institutions, Strategies and Receptions". Next to its impact on governments, public diplomacy is seen as a diplomatic practice aiming at directly or indirectly influencing civil societies. It encompasses all "seductive" strategies that a State implements towards the public opinions of another state or region. The growing importance of this idea highlights the necessity for the main players of international relations to maintain a multi-level dialogue with foreign civil societies in order to anticipate political and social developments initiated by other players than the State itself.

  Si l’élection de novembre 2008 fut saluée comme historique, les deux mandats qui suivirent furent-ils pour autant décisifs ? Dans quelle mesure Obama fut-il, pour reprendre la typologie de Stephen Skowronek (1993), un président qui sut, à l’instar de Franklin Roosevelt, créer un nouvel ordre économique et politique fondé sur la « répudiation » des équilibres antérieurs ? Peut-on parler plus largement d’une présidence « transformatrice » qui fit évoluer la nation américaine ou, au contraire, fut-elle « minimaliste », comme l’avait anticipé Cass Sunstein (2008), voire une « restauration » traditionnaliste ? De bien des façons la présidence Obama semble se situer entre ces types, mais jusqu’où et de quelle façon ?

  Defining and defying the concept of deviance and degeneration in the British Isles and North America in the 19th century

  This one-day conference aims at exploring the definition(s) and contours of deviance and degeneration as it was conceived in the British Isles and North America in the 19^th century. PhD students, postgraduate students and junior scholars whose research pertains to the study of deviant groups, whether self-defined or not, are particularly welcome to participate. Speakers will be invited to focus on the processes of definition of the standards of normality – whether religious, social, political, legal, medicalor sexual – as well as what those processes entailed for those who were labelled ‘deviants’. The role of scientists, doctors but also political authorities is of considerable interest in this respect, as are the ways in which normative standards were circumvented and challenged.

  Denim on stage

  University meets industry at Denim City in Amsterdam

  The aim of this one-day conference is to explore the evolution of denim from its origins in the French town of Nîmes, through the American invention of the modern blue jeans, to the contemporary global manufacturing and marketing of denim and jeans. Blue denim jeans are the most worn garments in the world. Even though denim is often perceived as a symbol of American culture, the denim fabric originated in Europe and has a long history. Yet it was only when denim trousers were riveted that the first modern pair of jeans were created in the late XIX^th century. Since this invention, jeans have made grand transformations from a worker’s garment, through a uniform of non-conformity and youth protest, to an item of fashion design. Recently, the Netherlands has become an international marketing cluster for the global denim industry.

  The paradigm of the inverted pyramid? Genesis, institutions, strategies and reception

  Politique Américaine, la revue de référence en langue française consacrée à la vie politique interne et aux stratégies internationales des États-Unis, lance un appel à contribution pour son nouveau numéro thématique : « La diplomatie publique américaine au Moyen-Orient : le paradigme de la pyramide inversée ? Genèse, institutions, stratégies et réception ». La diplomatie publique est envisagée comme toute pratique diplomatique visant à agir directement ou indirectement sur les sociétés civiles et non plus sur les seuls gouvernements. Autrement dit, il s’agit de l’ensemble des efforts de « séduction » qu’un État déploie vis-à-vis des opinions publiques d’un autre État ou d’une région. L’importance récente prise par ce concept, souligne la nécessité pour les principaux acteurs de la vie internationale d’entretenir un dialogue à plusieurs niveaux avec les sociétés civiles étrangères afin d’anticiper les évolutions politiques et sociales initiées par d’autres acteurs que les États.

  Philoséries « Philosopher avec les séries télévisées » épisode n°8

  Le colloque annuel « Philosopher avec les séries télévisées » avait jusqu’à présent principalement proposé de travailler selon un mode à la fois monographique et interdisciplinaire sur une série déterminée (24h chrono, The West Wing, Lost...). Si nous renouons par ce colloque avec Joss Whedon qui avait ouvert le cycle en 2009 (Buffy contre les vampires), nous inaugurons une nouvelle formule en proposant à l’analyse deux séries distinctes qui ont en commun, outre leur créateur Joss Whedon, d’être des séries écourtées de science-fiction : tandis que les précédentes séries étudiées avaient pu se déployer sur plusieurs années, Firefly ne comporte qu’une seule saison de 14 épisodes (2002) et un film (Serenity, 2005), et Dollhouse (sur laquelle nous avons déjà tenu un atelier en 2014) comporte deux saisons de 26 épisodes en tout (2009-10).

Alors que l’intensification du travail marque tous les modes de production – artisanat, industrie rurale, manufactures – de nombreux acteurs des techniques (artisans, ingénieurs, savants, caméralistes, etc.) proposent une théorisation de l’action productive, formulant de façon plus ou moins aboutie leur compréhension du travail en termes opératoires et plaçant de grands espoirs dans une science humaine capable d’améliorer l’activité.

  10th Annual and International Colloquium of the Society of Activities and Research on the Indian World

  In the postcolonial theoretical framework, the study of heritage and ruptures is a rather familiar paradigm. But it is not a depleted paradigm. Given the millennial history of the Indian subcontinent and the plurality of its culture, the way its languages, literatures and arts appropriate the past, grasp the present and envisage the future remains a relevant object for inquiry. From the crossroads of diachronicity and synchronicity, tradition and modernity, singularity and solidarity, here and elsewhere, repetition and reinvention, the 10^th annual SARI conference to be held on the 28^th and 29^th May 2015 at the Université Paris Ouest Nanterre la Défense and on the 30^th May 2015 at the université Paris 13, Sorbonne Paris Cité, will be devoted to the exploration of this topic from an inter and pluridisciplinary perspective.

  Jeunes et éducateurs au défi du vivre-ensemble (Europe – Amérique du Nord)

  Les systèmes éducatifs des sociétés multiculturelles d’Europe et d’Amérique du Nord sont actuellement mis au travail par les identités religieuses. Le port de signes « ostentatoires » par les éducateurs, les apprenants et/ou leurs parents, les demandes de prises en compte de dérogations, pour raison religieuse, au cadre commun (menus de substitution, absences ou dispenses), l’affirmation, dans l’espace scolaire, d’affiliations à dominante religieuse, alimentent un débat public dont les termes se posent différemment sur chaque rive de l’Atlantique. Ce colloque, construit autour d’un axe franco-canadien, mais ouvert à des espaces géographiques plus vastes, cherchera à explorer quelles solutions permettent de relever les nouveaux défis du vivre-ensemble.

  This two-day conference seeks to historicize the relationship between law and emotions, focusing on the period from the sixteenth century to the present. It aims to ask how legal definitions, categorizations and judgments were influenced by, and themselves influenced, moral and social codes; religious and ideological norms; scientific and medical expertise; and perceptions of the body, gender, age, social status. By examining the period between the sixteenth century and the present day, this conference also seeks to challenge and problematize the demarcation between the early modern and the modern period, looking at patterns and continuities, as well as points of fissure and change, in the relationship between law and emotions.

  The American state and the Second World War

  Alors que le sens commun et l'historiographie font dater du New Deal le gigantisme de l’État fédéral américain, il est en réalité le résultat de la seconde guerre mondiale : dans la mobilisation générale, sa taille est soudainement multiplié par dix. Warfare State explore ce processus, analysant comment l’État développe ainsi son influence sur la société américaine en guerre, et surtout pourquoi la population américaine (si souvent décrite comme « antiétatiste ») s'y est si bien adaptée. La participation de masse au service militaire, à l'industrie de guerre, au rationnement, au contrôle des prix, aux souscriptions d'emprunt et à la généralisation de l'impôt sur le revenu ont toutes appris aux Américains à vivre avec leur nouvel État fédéral, État-providence de guerre.

  Institut des Amériques seminar (2014-2015)

  Le séminaire « Les Amériques en Livres » s'intéresse aux ouvrages publiés par les maisons d'édition partenaires de l'Institut des Amériques, ainsi qu'aux travaux en sciences humaines parus chez les principaux éditeurs français et étrangers. Il contribue à  faire découvrir les études les plus récentes sur les Amériques. Les ouvrages portent sur l'ensemble des espaces américains du XVI^e siècle à nos jours et reflètent la diversité méthodologique employée dans les études présentées, la pluridisciplinarité, les approches locales ou globales, les ouvrages biographiques et de références. Les analyses comparatives et transnationales, abordées dans ce séminaire, établissent des liens et soulèvent des problématiques nouvelles entre les divers espaces des Amériques, l'Europe, l'Asie ou l'Afrique. Enfin, les présentations et échanges avec le public alimentent la réflexion sur les débats historiographiques actuels.

  Dynamiques des métropoles : gouvernement, aménagement et peuplement des agglomérations

  Europe et Amérique du Nord (XXe-XXIe siècles)

  Ce séminaire souhaite questionner les effets des formes d’organisation administrative et politique des grandes agglomérations urbaines et des politiques de peuplement et d’aménagement de l’espace. Son approche est interdisciplinaire et ouverte au comparatisme. Ce séminaire, qui s’appuie sur des recherches menées sur l’histoire des agglomérations, sur l’étude des catégories urbaines et sur les dynamiques de ségrégation, souhaite interroger les échelles et les cadres d’intervention des États et des collectivités territoriales du local au national. Il ambitionne de décrypter la construction des politiques urbaines, de suivre la circulation des savoirs et des modes de gouvernance des métropoles et de décrire les réseaux techniques et sociaux qui œuvrent à l’aménagement, au peuplement et à l’organisation politique et sociale des territoires.
