The world of Battlestar Galactica

Philoséries issue 4: The philosophy of TV series

Dans le cadre du cycle annuel « Philosopher avec les séries télévisées », ouvert en 2009 par un colloque sur Buffy contre les vampires et poursuivi en 2010 et 2011 respectivement par les journées « Séries d’élite, culture populaire : le cas HBO » et 24 heures chrono, nous nous proposons cette année de nous pencher sur l’univers des séries Battlestar Galactica. Si conformément au projet d’ensemble du cycle, nous comptons nous concentrer sur le cœur de la « franchise », à savoir les différentes séries télévisées (Galactica, Battlestar Galactica, Caprica etc.), les communications prenant appui pour tout ou partie sur les autres supports fictionnels disponibles (romans, jeux, bandes dessinées, etc.) seront aussi les bienvenues, tant il est vrai que la richesse de ce type d’univers ne peut être correctement appréhendée sans la prise en compte de ses multiples formes d’expression.

Franco-American comparisons

La pratique de la comparaison en sciences humaines suscite aujourd’hui d’assez vifs débats. Si le comparatisme est rarement critiqué dans son principe, l’affirmation de ses vertus s’apparentant même à une figure imposée dans la plupart des disciplines concernées, ses formes et usages offrent matière à controverse. De vibrants plaidoyers en faveur de ses variantes les plus aventureuses coexistent avec des mises en garde quant à la dimension téléologique et européocentrique de nombre de ses problématiques et de ses cadres d’analyse, voire quant au « mirage de la causalité » qu’alimenteraient ses incarnations les plus étroitement associées au paradigme développementaliste et à la quête des déterminants ultimes des trajectoires économiques et politiques des États-nations. Mais que peut-on attendre de la comparaison lorsque celle-ci serait dénuée de visée évaluative ou typologique ? Doit-elle être conçue comme la finalité de l’analyse ou comme son instrument ? Dans quelle mesure ses fonctions diffèrent-elle selon qu’elle constitue ou non une opération dérivée de l’examen d’une situation d’interaction entre des agents identifiés à ses différents termes ? Telles sont quelques-unes des questions que l’on voudrait ici formuler à propos d’un objet de comparaison si fréquent qu’il échappe le plus souvent à ce type d’interrogations réflexives : le binôme franco-américain.

Debt, Democracy, Citizenship

A Political History of Public Debts (Europe and the United States, since the Late Eighteenth Century)

This is call for papers for a symposium to be held in Paris in June 2013. Its main theme is a political history of public debts since the end of the eighteenth century. Organized as a workshop, this symposium aims to explore the public debt as the locus for political debates and conflicts. Our goal is to bring together various case studies, using different approaches, but all analyzing aspects of the link between politics (especially in its social or participative dimensions) and the indebtedness of states. This should help shed new light on such central concepts for our understanding of the modern political world as sovereignty, citizenship, democracy, and solidarity.

Terra Foundation Postdoctoral Teaching Fellowship in ENS – INHA (2013)

This two-year postdoctoral fellowship focuses on the history of American art and visual culture. The selected fellow teaches four semester-long courses to undergraduate and master’s-level students at a French university, participates in local seminars at the Institut National d’Histoire de l’Art and at the hosting university, and organizes academic programs on related research topics.

These grants provide support for publication projects on historical American art (pre-1980) that make a significant contribution to scholarship and have an international dimension. Projects may include translations of texts on American art; publications written by non-U.S. scholars or those with a significant number of non-U.S. contributors; and publications with a focused thesis exploring American art in an international context. Projects must be under contract for publication.

Terra Foundation Research Travel Grants to the United States (2013)

For doctoral students and postdoctoral scholars

Six to nine grants are awarded annually to doctoral students and postdoctoral scholars outside the United States to travel to the United States for research on pre-1980 American art and visual culture. Doctoral students receive up to $6,000; postdoctoral scholars (those who received their degree within ten years of the application deadline) receive up to $9,000. Destinations and duration of travel are determined by fellows.

Sociability and conviviality in Europe and North America, 17th-18th centuries

Académies, loges maçonniques, clubs et salons, société de lecture ou de débats, lycées et « musées » tel celui de Bordeaux créé en 1783, les lieux de sociabilité se multiplient aux XVIIe et XVIIIe siècles, alliant au plaisir de la convivialité et à l’art de la conversation une visée scientifique d’élaboration et de discussion des savoirs. Une abondante littérature normative n’a eu de cesse de définir les contours d’une sociabilité idéale. Plutôt qu’aux manuels de civilité ou de bienséance en eux-mêmes, on s’intéressera au fonctionnement effectif, quotidien, de ces espaces de sociabilité, aux mécanismes d’interaction qui confirment, ou parfois infirment, la validité de ces modèles. On s’intéressera à l’extension et aux limites de la sociabilité dans les sociétés hiérarchisées.

Accidents and Emergencies

Risk, Welfare and Safety in Europe and North America, c. 1750-2000

The aim of this conference is to take stock of the present by focusing on modern Europe and North America from roughly 1750 onwards. It welcomes historians from all sub-fields (social, medical, cultural, etc.), scholars from other disciplines such as sociology and cultural studies. Risk, welfare and safety have long been sites of historical inquiry. This conference takes this literature as its point of departure, and encourages both general and trans-national appraisals of the history and nature of modern "risk societies", as well as accounts which focus on particular technologies, practices and discourses. In sum, the aim of "Accidents and Emergencies" is to: rethink the history of risk, welfare and safety; encourage a more integrated approach to their empirical study and conceptualisation; open up new historical and sociological perspectives through which we might better grasp the present.

Transatlantic Cage. John Cage Centennial in Paris

2012 marquera le centième anniversaire de la naissance de John Cage, né le 5 septembre 1912. Ce projet vise à célébrer l’anniversaire des cent ans d’une figure centrale de l’art contemporain dont la philosophie et l’art a eu une importance prépondérante, quoiqu’encore peu connue, sur la scène française. L’occasion de son centième anniversaire est le moment idéal pour revenir sur la portée de son influence en France. Si le nom de Cage est un nom assez familier en tant que compositeur, son influence en France sur la musique, mais également sur l’histoire de l’art en général, est moins connue. C’est pourquoi l’impact qu’il a eu sur l’ensemble de la scène artistique, bien au-delà de la musique, mérite d’être présenté. Cet événement vise à donner au public la mesure de l’influence de Cage, en interrogeant la place qu’il occupe dans le paysage culturel français à travers un colloque international et des concerts qui réuniront des chercheurs et des artistes français et américains.

The coining, circulation and uses of a category of description and analysis in urban spaces

Ces deux journées d’études partent d’un terme-sobriquet qui fait désormais partie des « mots de la ville » : les « bobos ». Ce ne sont pas, en premier lieu, les migrations de ces citadins, connus pour s’installer dans les quartiers populaires de centre-ville qui nous intéressent, mais plutôt la circulation du terme même au début des années 2000. Terme non savant, dont les usages sont loin d’être univoques ou fixés, circulant entre le monde des journalistes, des chercheurs ou encore des habitants, le « bobo » engage certaines représentations des groupes sociaux et des divisions urbaines.

Contested Democracy:

Contestation and Participation in the English-speaking World

The dissent and uprisings that spread through the Arab world during the Spring of 2011 occurred almost a quarter of a century after the fall of East European political régimes that saw the rise of "democracy" modeled on the Anglo-American representative system. This specific context which has come to characterize the past quarter of century calls for a renewed analysis of the models these political systems represent and of the processes that triggered them and led to their long-term establishment in the UK and the US.Since the 1990s, as a response to the story of the inevitable emergence of democracy in the aftermath of the Cold War, researchers on North American politics have provided an alternative reading of events: that of a "contested democracy".
