  The Feodal Castle

  The generative uses of architectural forms

  La notion de château englobe de multiples réalités formelles bien souvent difficiles à classer ou échelonner avec précision dans le temps et l’espace. Le château incarne un système politique complexe : la féodalité. Il revêt des fonctions multiples, lieu de pouvoir, habitat familial, lieu de protection de quelques occupants ou refuge de la population etc. Castrum, castellum, fortia, quelles réalités bâties l’homme du Moyen Âge désigne-t-il derrière ces termes ? Nous nous questionnerons plus spécifiquement sur comment les usages et les fonctions se manifestent à travers les formes architecturales du château ? Les formes désignent ici l’ensemble des éléments architecturaux, qu’il s’agisse de la silhouette de l’édifice ou du détail d’un élément fonctionnel ou décoratif. Il s’agira donc de mettre en lumière des formes architecturales du château récurrentes ou non, qui caractérisent des coutumes propres au système féodal.

  While the notion of sustainability continues to be associated with the Brundtland Report (1987) and the concept of sustainable development, a community of sustainability researchers and practitioners increasingly seeks to emancipate the concept to be consistent with the knowledge and aspirations of the moment. The enthusiasm and expectations for more sustainability go beyond mere environmental issues. They touch on crucial social issues as well. The symposium papers intends to question the paradigms, models, scenarios and practices that embody sustainability. One may wonder what meaning should be given to the very idea of sustainability and the representations it conveys.

  Imperial Mysticisms: Piety and Power in Early Modern Empires from a Global Perspective

  Comparative research on the world-wide manifestations of mysticism in the imperial practice and performance of power seems promising for several reasons. It will enable us to highlight the appeal mystical spirituality had within the different religious traditions of the period; to point out historical contacts and transmission lines of a direct or indirect character and to discuss whether these religious and political developments fit into a common historical narrative. Regardless of what the answer to this question will be, we are certain that the elaboration of global perspectives, terminologies and research agendas is a goal worthy of being pursued in its own right. The conference will thus be part of approaches in historiography that aim at overcoming old epistemological boundaries between the study of the Orient and that of the West.

  Historiography of the Perception of Islam through Manuscripts, Korans and their Displacement

  The aim of this workshop is to approach the question of the relationship between Christianity and Islam through the study of the production, circulation and uses of Arabic manuscripts, and mainly Korans, in the late medieval and early modern Mediterranean Europe. Our assumption is that the Balkans, Italy and the Iberian Peninsula form an axis of circulation which is especially significant for our understanding of the Mediterranean Sea as a comprehensive space of cultural, political and religious contact.

  Ordinary interactions in an imperial context

  Des post colonial studies à l'histoire de la pensée raciale, nombreuses sont les études qui ont exploré la manière dont s'est construit l'Autre corporel de l'Europe. Plutôt que l’ordre savant, politique ou idéologique des classifications raciales et racialisantes, c’est ici le sentiment de la différence corporelle saisi dans le quotidien des échanges ordinaires qui retiendra l'attention des chercheurs. Depuis le choc des premières rencontres jusqu’au malaise diffus que suscite la confrontation d’habitus désajustés, il s’agira de traquer l’impression de ce décalage des corps, la façon dont les acteurs européens rendent compte de cette différence, mais aussi les stratégies qu’ils mettent en œuvre pour dépasser ce malaise et trouver le terrain d’une interaction maîtrisable.

  Cultural History of Cinema: Experiences and Horizons

  Depuis vingt ans, se tient, à Paris, un séminaire portant le titre « histoire culturelle du cinéma ». Celui-ci souhaite favoriser la rencontre de spécialistes du cinéma issus d'horizons différents mais aussi de chercheures et chercheurs venus d’autres champs, travaillant parfois sur des objets connexes (presse, théâtre, expositions, autres médias…), s'inscrivant dans diverses sciences sociales et explorant des aires géographiques multiples. Cette manifestation tend à questionner les enjeux épistémologiques entre histoire et cinéma et à en réinterroger les pratiques scientifiques. Des communications pourront être proposées sur les thèmes suivants: Frontières et territoires de l'histoire culturelle du cinéma; Approches transnationales; Histoire sociale, histoire des dispositifs; Une histoire culturelle des formes est-elle possible ?

  15th "Carrefours" conference of the history of sport

  L’histoire du sport, en France, a atteint l’âge de sa majorité. Fidèles à leurs principes premiers, les Carrefours d’histoire du sport ont, depuis 1996, successivement abordé des objets scientifiques proches des préoccupations des contemporanéistes, démontrant ainsi toute la légitimité du fait sportif, en dépit de ce « retard français », souligné jadis par Ronald Hubscher. Aux « historiens pionniers » est venue s’agréger une première génération de chercheurs dont les travaux et publications font désormais autorité, tandis qu’une troisième émerge déjà… À la différence des éditions précédentes, les historien(ne)s du SHERPAS souhaitent proposer une thématique délibérément historiographique, épistémologique et méthodologique, autour de ce « métier d’historien » dont les contours sont « uniformément changeants », à l’image du climat du Pas-de-Calais, terre d’accueil de l’édition 2020.

  The conference addresses the role, effects and meanings of values at the crossroads of politics, culture, market and law. It documents the circulation and shaping of values between the different spheres of the European multi-level governance (local, national, supranational, transnational). It investigates the EU as a container of values politics as well as its interactions with external entities (Council of Europe, UN, rest of the world). A secondary purpose is to map the research using values as an exploratory framework of wider transformations of politics, policies and polities in Europe. Leaders of scientific projects having developed such agendas in recent years figure among the contributors.

  New obstacles to migration, new tactics among migrants

  This conference will explore the transformation in the access to territory, mobility and rights. We will explore how the public image of refugees is transformed by xenophobic discourse and the everyday management of asylum rights, including the role of the private sector and the subsequent mobility of refugees. We will further explore the functioning of the access to rights of EU-migrants and the everyday functioning of other migration policies, including the access to healthcare, the detention of migrants and the access to citizenship. Finally, we will explore the political and electoral mobilisations of and in solidarity to migrants and minorities, including artistic expression, developed in answer to the new obstacles to migration.

  Bodies and health on television have not been extensively researched, in particular in the socialist and transition to market-economy contexts.The conference seeks to analyse how television and its evolving formats –contemporary, similar and yet differing in national broadcast contexts– expressed and staged bodies and health from local, regional, national and international perspectives. The conference seeks to better understand the role that TV, as a modern visual mass media, has played in what may be cast as the transition from a national bio-political public health paradigm at the beginning of the twentieth century, to alternative societal forms of the late twentieth century when (supposedly) “better” and “healthier” lives were increasingly shaped by market forces.

  Industrial excess: contamination by asbestos, citizen mobilisations and public (in)action

  Industrial pollution, environmental contamination (asbestos) by the Comptoir des minéraux et matières premières in Aulnay-sous-Bois (93): the stakes for citizens' and scientists'

  En 1990, une petite usine de broyage de minerais située au cœur d’un quartier pavillonnaire, à Aulnay-sous-Bois (Seine-Saint-Denis), cesse ses activités. Quelques années plus tard, un riverain, Pierre Léonard, âgé de 49 ans, décède d’un mésothéliome, un cancer de la plèvre dû à l’amiante. Sa sœur et son beau-frère, Nicole et Gérard Voide, parviennent à identifier la responsabilité du CMMP et d’autres victimes. Ils alertent alors dès 1998 les pouvoirs publics et les autorités sanitaires, revendiquant notamment la sécurisation du site, sa déconstruction et dépollution des sols, la recherche de toutes les personnes exposées et la mise en place d’un dispositif de suivi médical et social. Ils initient ainsi, en lien avec un collectif d’associations, une mobilisation toujours en cours aujourd’hui, dont ce colloque veut rendre compte, interrogeant les logiques d’acteurs dans la mise en visibilité de ce désastre sanitaire, à l’origine des maladies et décès de plus de 240 personnes.
