À l’occasion du 40e anniversaire de l’Institut — et en hommage à Marcel Liebman — nous ouvrons l’année 2026 avec une Chaire annuelle composée de quatre grandes conférences, portées par quatre intervenant·e·s, autour du thème : « Penser le monde à gauche face à la révolution conservatrice ». Ce cycle entend ouvrir à la réflexion et au débat « sur les pas de Marcel Liebman » et tend à prolonger son engagement intellectuel en fournissant des analyses historiques et critiques pour penser le monde d’aujourd’hui.

Les universités du bloc de l’Est comme lieu de rencontre de la jeunesse internationale pendant la guerre froide

Cette journée d’études sur la mobilité étudiante s’inscrit dans le tournant transnational de la recherche sur la guerre froide qui, depuis quelques années, met en avant une certaine perméabilité du rideau de fer. Elle met l’accent sur les circulations transnationales des étudiantes et étudiants. Elle se concentrera plus particulièrement sur les universités de l’Est comme lieu de sociabilité et de brassage culturel et comme lieu de rencontre de la jeunesse. Elle s’intéressera aux enjeux, aux modalités de ces rencontres pour comprendre leur impact sur les trajectoires personnelles de ces jeunes à un moment où se forgent l’identité et l’orientation professionnelle.

Ukrainian music beyond borders: a study of its reception before and after 2024

This international symposium will examine the reception of musical works by Ukrainian composers in artistic institutions (such as Philharmonics, concert halls, artistic centers and festivals) and in the press (both specialized and non-specialized) since 2014. Does the perception of Ukrainian music differ between Ukraine and abroad? If so, what makes this difference? Reflections will integrate various European countries such as England, Germany, the Czech Republic and France, as well as in non-European countries.

Taking place at the Lucian Blaga University of Sibiu, this conference invites scholars, senior and junior researchers, doctoral students, and practitioners to delve into the profound connections between cultural expression, historical legacies, and diplomatic relations that have shaped the shared and distinct identities of these regions. We invite submissions addressing the intersection of Literature, Heritage, and Diplomacy in the Baltic and Nordic contexts. The Normalized, the Normalizers and Their Cinemas

Czechoslovak and Soviet Films of the 1970s

In both cinemas—that of the “normalizer” and that of the “normalized”—the political and economic stagnation reinforced by stochastic censorship and disillusioned society often leads to peculiar examples of mismatched ideology and aesthetics allowing for viewing them as accidental camp classics today. What structural changes do Czechoslovak studios undergo in the wake of the Warsaw Pact invasion? What thematic and aesthetic choices can be attributed to their moment in film history on both sides of the Iron Curtain? How does the soaring number of light entertainment genre like melodrama, comedy or musical correlate with the current events? Last but not least, the questions of actors’ agency in the face of state repression and censorship, of reevaluation of the immense corpus of films created during the late-Communist era feel relevant in Russian and Central European cinema and culture in general today.

Les relations internationales en Europe centrale et orientale depuis 1990

L’Europe dite centrale et orientale, cette Europe de « l’entre deux », est souvent décrite comme le parent pauvre de la recherche en langue française, or il est possible d’assister ces dernières années à un retour sur le devant de la scène de cette « autre Europe », et tout particulièrement depuis l’éclatement de la guerre en Ukraine. Depuis 1989-1990, les relations internationales en Europe centrale et orientale ont connu d’importants bouleversements pour cet espace longtemps considéré comme périphérique. Cette journée d’étude invite ainsi à prendre les pays postsocialistes comme objet de prospection dans le domaine des relations internationales et d’interroger leurs dynamiques propres et leurs spécificités, en dépit de leur hétérogénéité. La coopération, les tensions, les trajectoires empruntées, les dynamiques géopolitiques, de même que les interactions avec d’autres espaces, sont autant de thématiques placées au cœur de la journée d’étude.

Violence and Conflict in Alexandre Kojève’s works

“Philosophical Journal of Conflict and Violence” - Special Issue

Alexandre Kojève is well known for having initiated a whole generation of intellectuals into a certain reading of Hegel. From the claim that the struggle for recognition must be necessarily a “bloody” one to the assessment that the replacement of those elites whose authority has expired may call for their annihilation, not to mention his equation of biological “death” with human freedom or his interpretation of revolutionary terror as a pedagogical tool to bring forth the perfect citizen of the post-historical age, Kojève´s corpus offers not few topics in which to ground such a reexamination. The special issue of Philosophical Journal of Conflict and Violence (PJCV) seeks cutting-age articles from contributors which openly explore the aforementioned topics as well as others along the same lines.

Moscou et l'Afrique

Trajectoires historiques, représentations, perturbation d'un ordre traditionnel ou fantasme ?

Après avoir entretenu des relations particulières avec l’Afrique durant les périodes de décolonisation et de guerre froide, Moscou s’est par la suite illustrée dans une attitude de désengagement à l’égard de cette dernière au début des années 1990. Puis, cette relation a donné lieu à une valse curieuse, entre relance et recul, pour connaitre un véritable regain vers la fin de la décennie 2010. Incontestablement, Moscou a d’ores et déjà repris pied dans de nombreux pays africains, en marquant sa présence de diverses manières. Une situation qui est de nature à inquiéter les anciennes puissances coloniales au rang desquelles la France, et par extension, le monde occidental. L’Afrique, serait-elle de nouveau l’un des théâtres des antagonismes Est/Ouest ?

La guerre russo-ukrainienne. Représentations et répercussions en Afrique

Le 24 février 2022, la Fédération de Russie a déclenché un conflit armé contre l’Ukraine. Le 2 mars, le vote de la résolution de l’Assemblée générale des Nations unies (AGNU) condamnant cette guerre et demandant le retrait immédiat de l’armée russe du territoire ukrainien a donné les résultats suivants : sur les 193 États membres de l’Organisation des Nations unies (ONU), 141 ont approuvé cette résolution, 5 s’y sont opposés, 35 se sont abstenus et 12 n’ont pas pris part au vote. S’agissant particulièrement des 54 États africains, 29 ont voté pour, un seul s’y est opposé, 16 se sont abstenus et 8 autres n’ont pas participé au vote. Que révèle le vote des États africains à l’ONU en lien avec la guerre russo-ukrainienne ? Quelles sont les répercussions de ce conflit en Afrique ? Le présent appel à contributions vise, précisément, à répondre à ces deux interrogations.

CFP Forum Ukraine - The American University of Paris

The George and Irina Schaeffer Center for the Study of Genocide, Human Rights, and Conflict Prevention, and the American University of Paris hope to provide a virtual forum on May 9-10, 2022, for scholars from multiple disciplines and humanitarian activists to process the causes and consequences of the war in the Ukraine. Because of the urgency and ongoing nature of the conflict, we are not expecting polished academic presentations but short (10-15 minutes) thought pieces that help to elucidate various aspects and interpretations of the war. A primary aim is to give Ukrainian and Russian scholars the opportunity to express themselves and their point of view.

Religious Actors advocating Human Rights in the Helsinki process - Part II

New research perspectives on the non-state actors in view of the 50th anniversary of the Helsinki Final Act (1975–2025)

The Conference for Security and Cooperation in Europe (CSCE) born of the Helsinki Agreements (1973-75) is often described as one of the main diplomatic achievements of the détente era, and a crucial milestone towards ending the Cold War. Yet not only diplomats played a part in the process. Non-state actors and NGOs also did their share by lobbying CSCE staff and conference attendees for Human Rights and Religious Freedom violations behind the Iron Curtain or they started political discussion processes in the public sphere of their respective countries. Drawing on the most recent research on this topic, this online workshop aims at further exploring human rights activists involved in the Helsinki process, at the interface between the Dissent and the Western public, and between state and other private networks.

Les voisinages artistiques entre tension et coopération

L’espace artistique de l’Europe centrale et orientale dans ses interactions avec l’URSS dans l’entre-deux-guerres

Dans l'entre-deux-guerres, l'administration soviétique forme une diplomatie culturelle d’un type nouveau avec pour but d’attendre des fins politiques, diplomatiques et propagandistes. Les historiens s’intéressent surtout aux expériences et aux échanges culturels avec l’Europe occidentale ou avec les États- Unis, alors que les pays limitrophes sont souvent exclus des études de ces circulations. La journée d’études, qui aura lieu le 1er juin 2021, vise à revisiter l'histoire artistique et culturelle de l'entre-deux-guerres dans la perspective des relations entre l'URSS et l'Europe centrale et orientale, à travers l'étude de la carrière internationale des artistes et des œuvres d'art au sens large du terme (peinture, sculpture et plus particulièrement les productions d'art graphique). Son objectif est de rassembler des jeunes spécialistes (doctorants et chercheurs en début de carrière) autour de cette thématique complexe, riche et peu étudiée.

Using the Hungarian case as a springboard, and broadening the perspective to the whole of Danubian Europe, the conference seeks to address the following questions: the new social bonds emerging from the transformation brought about by the Paris Peace Conference; social, intellectual and (or) regional impact of changes, conflicts and international confrontations between 1918 and 1924. The conference aims to rise to the challenge of writing comparative social histories of this historical moment.

Dissent Versus Conformism in the Nordic, Baltic and Black Sea Areas

The tenth annual international conference on Nordic and Baltic Studies in Romania

In the meanwhile, conformism seems to have pervaded larger categories of public in East-Central Europe and beyond and new “illiberal democracies” evolved. A composite of authoritarian leader and godfather have taken the reins of power in the area. Populist parties and movements are on the rise. Resurgent nationalisms are again offered as a substitute to solutions. The refugee crisis lingers on and no common decisions have been adopted within the EU to solve it on the basis of the European values. The EU institutions are in need of reform and decisions on the course of the organization and its future enlargement process are still pending. The conference aims at analyzing two often interrelated phenomena: dissent and conformism.
