Quo vadis Provenance Research?

Primary Sources and Archival Collections in Post-Unitarian Italy

The workshop will focus on primary sources and archival collections in post-unitarian Italy, which serve as a fundamental tool for provenance research. Research projects dealing with the Italian post-unitary period up to the recent years still face the significant challenge of not only having to locate archival sources, but also of finding a way to access and consult them. The workshop aims to put this issue up for discussion and wishes to promote an open dialogue between international scholars and representatives of research institutions. The focus lies not only on traditional art historical sources such as specified libraries, photographic collections, private estates or institutional archives. It is also intended to include historical and political archives. The aim is to connect various sources and methods of archival work related to the field of provenance research and to identify potential improvements in the provision and the use of archival material (including digital data) in Italy and abroad.

Visual culture of the former Habsburg Empire and Central Europe

“Belvedere Research Journal”

We are interested in articles that shed light on the visual culture of the former Habsburg Empire and Central Europe broadly defined from the medieval period to the present. Contributions that position Austrian art practices within a wider international framework are particularly welcome. We value innovative art historical approaches, such as challenging established narratives or exploring transnational exchanges that highlight the interconnected and cross-cultural nature of the art world. The Belvedere Research Journal is also keen to feature work on artists and figures who have been historically underrepresented, with a special emphasis on women. We encourage interdisciplinary research that blends art history with methodologies from other fields, such as digital humanities, social sciences, and cultural economics.

Revue “Diasporas. Circulations, Migrations, Histoire”

This thematic issue of Diasporas. Circulations, Migrations, Histoire journal aims to examine mechanisms of loss and deprivation of nationality, as well as operations aimed at requalifying the boundary between nationals and non-nationals through citizenship rights, while paying close attention to the effects of these procedures on migrants’ experiences. We welcome interdisciplinary contributions that incorporate theoretical and methodological approaches from diverse fields such as law, political science, geography, anthropology, and sociology, enriching historical perspectives. Articles must adopt an empirical methodological approach. We welcome proposals that focus on non-Western contexts.

This workshop challenges traditional East-West Cold War narratives by examining the cultural interactions between communist Europe and the Global South. We will primarily focus on art, culture, and heritage as sources of new insights into historical narratives. We ask the following questions: How can artistic expression contribute to the rethinking of historical narratives? How have political circumstances shaped artistic and cultural production, and vice versa? What were the underlying power dynamics? And what are the contemporary legacies of such interactions?

Revue « Ebisu. Études japonaises », numéro 63

Alors que l’étude de texte et l’analyse littéraire ont longtemps joué un rôle majeur dans les études japonaises, la production matérielle du livre, l’industrie de l’édition, les circuits symboliques et marchands qui structurent la carrière des auteurs et décident du destin de leurs ouvrages ont été relativement peu étudiés dans le champ académique, en particulier pour la période contemporaine. Comme partout ailleurs, ce secteur traverse pourtant des bouleversements sans précédent en raison de l’évolution du lectorat et du développement de nouveaux formats ou de nouvelles pratiques de lecture. Le principal objectif de ce dossier spécial est de combler ce manque en présentant des travaux qui peuvent s’inscrire dans des domaines de recherche divers : économie, études littéraires, histoire, sciences juridiques, sociologie, etc.

Herrmann/Horner: two Hollywood giants in the service of the emotional?

This international symposium pays tribute to two Hollywood giants, Bernard Herrmann (1911-1975), who died on December 24, 1975 during post-production of Martin Scorcese's Taxi Driver, and James Horner (1953-2015), who was accidentally killed on June 22, 2015 while piloting one of his jets. This singular way of arousing visceral emotion or probing affects offers a possible convergence between these two Hollywood giants. Following the example of the emotional register, we could examine the various aspects of Bernard Herrmann's work that have received little attention, or focus in depth on the constituent elements of James Horner's style. These are just a few of the avenues open to us, but as this is first and foremost a tribute, the paths to be taken are multiple, depending on what the participants wish to highlight.

Cyber Strategy and Chinese Power: Emerging Threats and Geopolitical Issues

En 2024, la Chine augmente son budget militaire de 7,2 %, atteignant plus de 231 milliards de dollars. La cybersécurité devient une priorité stratégique mondiale, soulevant des inquiétudes quant aux nouvelles menaces et enjeux géopolitiques. La Chine utilise ses capacités cyber pour affirmer sa puissance, posant des questions sur la sécurité internationale et l’équilibre des pouvoirs. Cet appel à contributions s’intéresse aux capacités offensives et défensives dans des domaines comme l’Intelligence artificielle, la robotique et le quantum computing. Il s’agit également de questionner les relations de la Chine avec les États-Unis, l’Union européenne, la Russie et ses voisins asiatiques dans ce domaine. La dépendance technologique, comme par exemple l'implantation de la 5G par Huawei en Afrique, soulève de nombreuses préoccupations. Enfin, les enjeux éthiques et juridiques en matière de surveillance et d'espionnage nécessitent une vigilance accrue.

La revue des Cahiers de Mariemont fait appel aux historien·nes, historien·nes de l’art, archéologues, archéomètres, médiateur·trices, commissaires d’exposition et autres acteurs du secteur muséal et universitaire pour investiguer les méthodes d’identification des couleurs, les limites de l’interprétation et des restitutions chromatiques et les enjeux de médiation muséale autour des couleurs perdues des statues de l’Antiquité. Les articles privilégieront des études transversales ou diachroniques, des essais de synthèse sur des thèmes iconographiques ou des catégories typologiques, des analyses centrées sur les pigments, les techniques picturales et les pratiques d’atelier, des réflexions autour des restitutions et des dispositifs de médiation.

Pour ce numéro spécial de la Revue Suisse d’Anthropologie Sociale et Culturelle, nous proposons de reprendre un point soulevé par Alain Desrosières (2008) lorsqu'il souligne les contradictions, dans l’approche statistique, entre une perspective « réaliste » (servant d'outil de pouvoir, de gouvernement ou de critique) et une perspective « conventionnaliste » (dans laquelle la « mise en variables » est elle-même prise dans un processus de production de savoirs politiques et historiques). Selon lui, cela pose un problème de « double conscience ». Comment cette apparente contradiction est-elle vécue, comprise, voire résolue par les acteurs auxquels elle est présentée ? Quelles opérations cela implique-t-il ? Quels sont les compromis qui émergent ?

“Is there a need for a new environmental ethic?” asks the article by the Australian philosopher Richard Routley. This statement, rooted in the inaugural reflections of Aldo Leopold in 1973, signifies the starting point of a new philosophical and moral exploration of the natural environment. This emerging field of applied ethics gains traction in social, political, legal, and international debates, compelling an increasing demand for philosophical insights. It challenges established relationships with the natural, material, cultural, and animal realms, prompting a call for a fundamental reconfiguration of our politics, institutions, justice systems, ethics, and our understanding of the subject. The primary object of this special issue is to spotlight the ongoing philosophical reflections on the environmental crisis prevalent in the Anthropocene society.

Ce séminaire est ouvert aux chercheurs confirmés, aux jeunes chercheurs et aux doctorants qui souhaitent valoriser leurs travaux et participer aux réflexions avancées dans ce cadre. Les acteurs professionnels des archives, du patrimoine et de la diplomatie sont également invités à participer afin de renforcer l’entrecroisement des disciplines et des expertises. Les étudiants de Master 2 sont également invités à soumettre une présentation de leur mémoire de recherche, sous réserve d’une présentation détaillée transmise en amont témoignant d’une rigueur scientifique.

In the last twenty years, there have been different approaches to the topic of travel from various disciplinary fields and perspectives. This symposium aims for a multidisciplinary approach to the topic of travel, understood as the deliberate movement of an individual through space, without being physically or psychologically forced or coerced. This symposium aims to be a space of dialogue and reflection about travel, its narratives, and its written and visual depictions. We aim to foster new approaches to travel understood in its specificity vis a vis the articulation of a disciplinary field (rather than its traditional understanding as a subsidiary object to other fields of study).

Les échanges culturels dans les revues littéraires (domaines francophones, anglophones et germanophones), XIXe-XXe sièces

Ce colloque a pour but d’étudier le rôle des revues dans l’évolution des canons littéraires et artistiques au XIX^e et au XX^e siècle dans les domaines francophones, anglophones et germanophones. Si les forces de réaction « trouvent des organes puissants auprès de véritables gendarmes médiatiques » (Diaz, 2014) comme les revues dominantes et institutionnelles, les forces d’évolution voire de révolution usent elles aussi de l’arme médiatique qu’est la revue. Nous aimerions proposer des journées de réflexion sur les échanges culturels au sein des revues, dans une perspective transnationale, translittéraire et pluriséculaire.
