The conference at the Federal Archives is a platform for discussing these links from a variety of perspectives. It covers a wide range of issues debated in the humanities and social sciences as well as in technological research and the information and administration sciences. The objective is to gain new knowledge by sharing the latest research on the topic and to identify further issues for future examination.

Transitions et inégalités : relations et effets d'échelle (1500-2000)
L’histoire de l’humanité est constellée de changements brusques ou lents qui constituent autant de périodes de transition : passage d’un système de production à un autre, changement de système technique, social, démographique, migratoire, etc. Ces transitions (politiques, sociales, économiques) peuvent être lues comme conséquence d’inégalités au sein des systèmes économiques et/ou sociaux, bien qu’aussi les phases de transition (économiques, mais aussi politiques) ont produit à leur tour des nouvelles inégalités. En se portant sur diverses époques historiques et sur divers contextes du monde européen, cette journée d’étude se propose d’analyser la production d’inégalités, en les situant par rapport aux processus et aux phases de transition.

Computation and software analysis have entered nearly every imaginable field of scholarship in the last decades, in a variety of forms from digital publication of results to computational modelling embedded in experimental work. In each of these digital outputs - be it an interactive publication with mapping of relevant geo-referenced data, or perhaps a statistical program for the categorization of millions of books according to their literary genre - there is some manifestation directly in the computer code of the scholarly thought that underlies the project, of the intellectual argument around which the outcome is based.

Ce dossier propose de penser l’articulation entre espace public et marginalité sous l’angle des enjeux de compétition et de visibilité auxquels sont confrontées les villes actuelles, en Suisse comme ailleurs. L’espace a toujours été un enjeu de la vie urbaine, notamment parce qu’il est intimement associé à l’image de la ville (Rosemberg 2000 ; Lindner 2008 ; Färber, 2008). De par sa rareté, il devient un enjeu de compétition pour la possession du sol, mais également un enjeu symbolique de contrôle du voisinage et de l’accès à l’espace public et finalement un enjeu de dominations politiques (Grafmeyer 1994 ; Knierbein 2010 ; Wildner 2003). Or, il l’est d’autant plus dans le contexte actuel de globalisation de l’économie qui place les grandes villes dans une situation de concurrence économique (Sassen 2002).

L'Institut d'histoire de la médecine de l'Université de Berne met au concours un poste de doctorant(e) en histoire de la médecine. Une allocation de thèse d’une durée de 3 ans de CHF 42 000 à 48 000 par an est attribuée par le Fonds National Suisse de la Recherche Scientifique (FNS) dans le cadre du projet de recherche : « Medical practice and international networks. Albert Schweitzer's Hospital in Lambarene, 1913-1965 ». Le but est de produire un "biographie analytique" de l'hôpital Albert Schweitzer de Lambarene en s'appuyant sur des sources d'archives disponibles en langues allemande et française. On visera à comprendre la pratique médicale à l'hôpital et le réseau international de Schweitzer.

The office as an interior (1880-1960)
Au cours de la « deuxième révolution industrielle » augmente considérablement l’activité dans le tertiaire et se développent les services administratifs dans le secteur industriel et public. L’employé devient ainsi la figure sociale de la modernité urbaine, qui témoigne aussi du rôle croissant de la femme dans ce secteur professionnel. Le colloque The office as an interior (1880-1960) aborde l’essor du travail administratif entre 1880 et 1960 à travers l’analyse de l’émergence d´un espace nouveau, le bureau, qui par ses arrangements contribue à la diffusion de nouvelles formes de sociabilité et réalise des nouveaux modes d’organisation du travail.

Le 15 novembre 2013 aura lieu à Berne le colloque infoclio.ch 2013 sur le thème : « L'édition en histoire à l'ère du numérique ». Ce colloque est le cinquième de la série « Médias numériques et sciences historiques ». Le colloque réunit chercheurs, éditeurs, représentants des institutions de recherche et autres acteurs impliqués dans le processus de publication scientifique pour débattre des évolutions récentes de l'édition historique et de l'avenir de la publication électronique.

Rural History 2013 is the first conference held under the auspices of the European Rural History Organisation (EURHO). It is organised by the Swiss Rural History Society (SRHS) and the Archives of Rural History (ARH) in Bern and takes place at the University of Bern from 19-22 August 2013. The main aim of the conference is to provide an overview of the state of the art of rural history today. Another goal is to strengthen the existing networks and co-operation of rural historians and their institutions. The conference will be an excellent occasion for historians to discuss the basic question of what exactly rural history is, how it can be narrated and, crucial for the future development of rural history, how the attractions of rural history in an era of worldwide urbanization can be communicated to the younger generation.

The media in the Maghreb and Subsaharan Africa
Réunissant une cinquantaine de chercheurs, ce colloque international de trois jours a pour objectif d’explorer l’évolution récente des médias au Maghreb et en Afrique subsaharienne. Portant sur les médias conventionnels (presse, télévision, etc.) et électroniques (internet, réseaux sociaux, etc.) en français, ce colloque pluridisciplinaire s’interrogera sur leur libération actuelle, tant au niveau de leurs modes de production qu’à celui de leur contenu socio-politique. D’une part, l’accent sera mis sur les nouveaux rapports à la langue française dont témoignent ces médias, en relation avec les langues nationales et les identités de leurs publics. D’autre part, les débats porteront sur la contribution de ces médias à la démocratisation de l’Afrique. Ce colloque permettra ainsi de confronter leur rôle mobilisateur et la diversité des interactions médiatico-politiques prévalant au Maghreb et sur le reste du continent africain.

La visualisation de données dans les sciences humaines, après un premier essor dans les années 1960 dans le courant de l’histoire quantitative, puis son rejet dans les années 1970, connaît un renouveau certain ces dernières années. Des logiciels de visualisation faciles d’utilisation, associés à une augmentation de la puissance de calcul des ordinateurs, ont mis à la disposition de presque tout chercheur des méthodes quantitatives et des outils de visualisation jusque-là très complexes. Quelles sont les données qui peuvent être représentées ? Quels sont les avantages et les inconvénients des différentes séries de données et outils disponibles ? L’association Histoire et Informatique consacrera le prochain numéro de sa revue, publiée chez Chronos, à ces questions.

The Office as an interior (1880-1960)
The so-called “second industrial revolution” meant a significant growth in the tertiary sector (banks, insurance companies, etc.); at the same time new administrative bodies arose both in industry and at agencies and public authorities. This went hand in hand with a massive increase in the numbers of employees. The employee became the socio-professional figure of the urban modernity, whereas the professional woman became increasingly important. The symposium addresses the development of the office in order to analyse the interdependency between physical and social space, materiality and practices, strategies and tactics, structures and individuals. Likewise, it is intended to approach the office from a historical perspective, as attention is directed towards the significance of the office for structuring and transforming the sociocultural situation from the turn of the last century through the end of the 1950’s.

Digital Humanities Summer School 2013
This first edition of the DH Summer school Switzerland will take place in Bern, 26-29 June 2013. The DH Summer school is organized in three types of modules: courses, workshops, and unconference. In addition, there will be a participant project slam, a social evening and an optional excursion. Each course is 90 minutes long and is completed by a hands-on training workshop or tutorial of 90 min. Course Lecturers are senior scholars of their respective domain. In addition to the plenary courses, the Summer School offers a selection of 90 min. workshops on various DH topics and tools. Those workshop will take place in parallel sessions.

Ce workshop, organisé dans le cadre du Congrès annuel de la Société suisse de sociologie, vise à faire état de la recherche suisse et internationale sur la police et les métiers du contrôle et de la contrainte, et sur son inscription dans des problématiques sociales et sociologiques plus larges. Perçus comme catalyseurs, reproducteurs et plus rarement combattants des inégalités, les métiers de la force publique et de la sécurité sont au centre de nombreux discours, représentations et dénonciations concernant les discriminations.

Medical expertise in the 20th and 21st century / Medizinische Expertise im 20. und 21. Jahrhundert / L'expertise médicale aux XXe et XXIe siècles. Annual conference of the Swiss Society for the History of Medicine and Sciences, September 5 – 7, 2013, Bern, Switzerland. The conference would like to address the issue from various perspectives and ask e.g. the following questions: To which levels of medical knowledge and activity (skill, professional knowledge, experience, relationship with patients) did and does the claim of expertise refer to? Which strategies, rhetorics and kinds of self-fashioning were and are used in order to achieve, retain or reject the status of expertise? Which was and is the relationship between expertise, profession(nalism), institutionalization and specialization? In what respect is there a difference between a physician's claim of expertise and that of other health professionals?

L’extension européenne du phénomène, sinon du nom choisi pour désigner ces groupes d’amateurs de savoir, indique qu’il se trouve, partout, des esprits soucieux de la place qu’ont ou devraient avoir les connaissances et dans l’amélioration politique et économique du présent et dans les desseins pour l’avenir.
