Beyond the “White Man’s Burden”?
Representations of the “Far East” in the English-Speaking World since World War II
This one-day workshop seeks to examine the shifting image of the “Far East” in the English-speaking world, including - but not limited to - news, film, museums, exhibitions, travel literature and television. In part, it seeks to complement the study of media representations with a tentative assessment of their reception, and by examining the overlapping areas between media representations and historical events. The period since the Second World War has seen profound changes in the “Far East”, notably because of decolonization, the creation of independent nation-states and the increasing power of China, Japan and India. This workshop will examine the persistence (or not) of the “white man’s burden” in a post-imperial age.

Ces courants populistes sollicitent diverses ressources politiques et symboliques, dont le religieux. L’objet de ce colloque est, précisément, d’aborder l’articulation entre populisme et religion.

Il s’agira de discuter en interdisciplinarité de ce qui peut être propre ou commun, de ce qui peut procéder d’un échange, d’un transfert culturel, d’un Zeitgeist.

The creation, reception and circulation of the figures of otherness in the cinema of fiction
Exoticism in countershot workshop
Cet atelier, regroupant plusieurs approches disciplinaires sur le cinéma, se propose de réfléchir à la notion d’exotisme dans les films de fiction. Il est l’occasion de revenir aux textes conceptualisant cette notion (en peinture et en littérature notamment), et de les confronter à diverses cinématographies européennes ou extra-européennes. L’enjeu est de multiplier les points de vue dans une dynamique de champ-contrechamp. Nous prendrons à bras-le-corps la question de l’exotisme dans le cinéma de fiction pour en faire un objet d’histoire culturelle, en faisant aussi appel à d’autres disciplines (anthropologie, esthétique, histoire des formes). Une analyse des rapports entre exotisme et cinéma peut nourrir les réflexions des sciences humaines et apporter des éléments de compréhension de ce « fait social total » qu’est le cinéma.

What are the normative assumptions and solutions proposed to develop morally right or wrong compromise typologies? Can we develop a universal ethics of compromise or does compromise vary depending on the socio-cultural history of a country? To what extent is culture relevant in shaping types and norms of compromise? The conference aims, firstly, to understand how to distinguish a compromise from a compromise of principles; what constitutes an ethical or fair compromise? Second, it will analyze if practices of compromise vary from one country to another. To do so, different types of compromise will be explored through geopolitical, philosophical, historical approaches, with a particular focus on Japan and Taiwan. This symposium will examine theoretical issues and practices associated with compromise, by adopting a global perspective. It will bring together contributions from European, American and Asian researchers.

With our panel “Far from the eyes, far from the agenda? Political parties and activism in the MENA: between innovation, resistance and resilience” we seek original papers that elaborates on new, renewed or long-standing parties in the above contexts and that contribute theoretically, empirically and/or methodologically to understand the different trajectories of change and continuity.

Si la modernité est incarnée en Occident par la rationalisation de l’État et de la société qui met à bas les mythes de la tradition et fait s’effondrer l’autorité de la religion et du pouvoir absolu, elle s’exprime dans l’Empire du Milieu d’une autre façon et sous une autre forme. Depuis les guerres de l’Opium au milieu du XIXe siècle, la Chine se trouve sous l’influence massive du monde occidental, et prend l’Occident comme modèle à suivre pour se moderniser. Mais le processus de modernisation de la Chine est cependant marqué par le rejet d’une occidentalisation totale. La modernité occidentale semble étrangère aux Chinois, alors que ces derniers l’ont en réalité adaptée aux circonstances propres à leur pays. Cette journée d’étude vise à étudier les divers aspects de la question de la modernité dans la Chine d’hier et d’aujourd’hui, afin de s’interroger sur les différentes formes de la modernisation « à la chinoise », au niveau politique, dans la société, dans la pensée, dans la littérature, dans les arts et dans la religion.

Ninth Annual Symposium of the Consortium for Asian and African Studies (CAAS)
The theme of this year’s conference is a critical questioning about the evolving concept and the diverse and complex realities of “Minorities” in Asia and Africa as well as among migrants from these areas all over the world. The construction of the concept of “Minority" fits different definitions in terms of international law and it occasionally varied according to places and periods. Minorities arise in Asia and in Africa? What situations does the recognition of identity pluralism conduce to? Can any “areal” specificity be distinguished on this point? How does the “Minority Law” has evolved, within the framework of the willingness of the international organizations since 1947 to ensure and to protect it? The issue of Minorities in the context of immigration and the creation of Diaspora groups will be also explored.

« Jeté hors de toutes les séries », le général de Gaulle n’aimante d’abord à lui que des personnes, c’est-à-dire autant de cas d’espèce que de personnalités. Devenir Français libre est un choix individuel répondant chaque fois à des motivations singulières. Celles-ci s’étalent sur un très large spectre qui va de la continuation de la guerre à la croisade antinazie, en passant notamment par la défense de la République, le goût de l’aventure, ou encore la volonté de libérer le territoire. Le but du colloque sera d’éclairer cette diversité d’origines, de parcours, de motifs, d’évolutions, etc. parmi les Français libres sans s’interdire de regarder un peu autour pour apprécier différences et ressemblances éventuelles. Il consiste aussi à affiner l’analyse de ce qui fait l’unité des Français libres aux divers moments de leur épopée et au-delà.

The body in law - doctoral workshops in the history and anthropology of law
Journées doctorales d'histoire et d'anthropologie du droit
Autorisation de la gestation pour autrui (GPA), statut des embryons congelés, réflexion sur l’euthanasie, légalisation de la prostitution, réattribution sexuelle, la question du corps est plus que jamais d’actualité pour le législateur, le juge et le justiciable. L’absence de consensus sur ces questionnements et les débats passionnés qu’entrainent toutes les problématiques liées au corps sont la conséquence directe de la difficulté à définir juridiquement ce concept. Nous allons modestement tenter de faire le point sur le statut juridique du corps. Pour ce faire, nous convierons l’Histoire du Droit, l’Anthropologie juridique, la Philosophie du droit et le droit positif. Surtout, tout au long de ces deux journées, nous nous transporterons en différents lieux et à différentes époques pour, au moyen de ce voyage temporel et spatial, tenter de dessiner une histoire et une géographie de l'appréciation du corps par le droit.

Religion of the Ancient Near East: New Developments (RANEND)
Among the Near Eastern research programs of interest to Ghent, ULille and UCLouvain universities, the study of religion in the Near East has been chosen as a central theme of a new cooperation project, as several teachers-researchers, doctoral and post-doctoral students are already involved in this field. in 2018, we will start with a masterclass on Hittite religion with Dr Alice Mouton (CNRS - UMR 8167), a well-known scholar of the Hittite world and a specialist of religion in ancient Anatolia, first step to renew the approaches and to develop a reflection of the importance of this subject in ancien Near Eastern societies. Other conferences on the theme of religion in the Ancient Near East and Egypt will be delivered on the same day by other scholars from England, France and Belgium.

Recent success of Chinese reality television singing competitions broadcasted on national television or streamed directly on the internet, has shown the extent of musical genres represented in the Chinese world, from pop to folk via hip-hop or rock ’n’ roll. The popularity of new musical styles up to then considered as deviant as well as the recent attempts of the State to intervene directly on musical contents, tend to blur the distinctions between “mainstream” (流行) music, “popular” (民间) music as non-official, “underground” (地下) music or even “alternative” (另类) music. This call for papers aims at promoting a better understanding of the transformations of Chinese “musical worlds”, in the sense that Becker gave to “art worlds”, which stresses the role of cooperation and interactions between the different actors of the artistic sphere.

Feeding death - funerary rituals and alimentary practices in the Alpes and Himalayas
Les pratiques et les gestes funéraires constituent une prérogative uniquement humaine depuis au moins 100.000, datation attribuée par les archéologues aux sépultures de Skhül (Mugharet es-Skhül), en Moyen Orient, les plus anciens exemples de sépulture volontaire de l’espèce des Homo Sapiens. Les récentes découvertes archéologiques des équipes dirigées par Aldenderfer et Eng (2016) dans le Upper Mustang (Népal) ont mis en évidence des aperçus inédits de l’histoire des populations himalayennes de haute altitude et de leurs rituels de la mort. Ce colloque permettra aussi d’aborder des aspects secondaires inhérents les rituels funéraires tels que certaines pratiques alimentaires spécifiques, appelées à jouer un rôle précis sur le plan social et symbolique.

An historical panorama of nuclear dissuasion from 1945 to the present day
Dans un monde dont une partie importante renforce la place dévolue à l’arme nucléaire (en Russie ou en Asie par exemple), et où par ailleurs l’Europe a largement perdu sa grammaire dans ce domaine, il est utile de jeter un regard historique sur un certain nombre de débats et d’événements à caractère nucléaire de l’époque contemporaine, et d’éclairer ainsi sous cet angle les questions de politique internationale et de sécurité actuelles. L’objectif de ce séminaire est d’aborder l’histoire de la dissuasion nucléaire dans ses dimensions stratégiques, militaires, politiques et administratives, et d’offrir un panorama général de l’histoire de la dissuasion nucléaire, de 1945 à nos jours.

A global history of free ports
Capitalism, commerce and geopolotics (1600-1900)
Exactly how free ports arose in early-modern Europe is still subject to debate. Livorno, Genoa and other Italian cities became famous as major examples of a particular way of attracting trade. Between the late eighteenth and the nineteenth century the existence of free ports – as specific fiscal, cultural, political and economic entities with different local functions and characteristics – developed from an Italian and European into a global phenomenon. While a general history of free ports – from their first emergence to the present-day special economic zones – has never been written, this research network aims to pave the way for such an enterprise. The history of free ports research network is organising a number of conferences in the next years, in order to work towards a standard publication and interactive research platform for the history of free ports from the XVIth to the early XXth century.
