Pursuing a career in Chinese art in the United Kingdom
This afternoon event in Bath (United Kingdom) is aimed at postgraduate students and early career academics interested in Chinese art, whether as a career or as a source for their research. The afternoon will start with a visit to the Museum of East Asian Art Bath. Then three leading professionals in Chinese art in the United Kingdom will give a talk and questions/answers. A workshop will then invite participants to reflect on and prepare for a career related to the arts of China.

New research on the History of Chinese gardens and landscapes
Organised by Dr Jan Woudstra in conjunction with the Gardens Trust, the event will look at new discoveries in the field from both professionals and post-graduate students from around the world. Dr Alison Hardie will introduce the conference and outline the importance that Maggie Keswick’s 1978 book The Chinese Garden, History Art and Architecture has played in the subject. It is a unique opportunity to hear speakers from UK and International institutions to present their new research in the field. Talks will cover subjects as wide-ranging as Jesuit water landscapes, gardens as museums, Feng Shui symbolism and botanical watercolours.

Dans un monde de plus en plus multipolaire, les politiques extérieures des principaux pays émergents visent davantage à légitimer leur statut de puissances régionales qu’à promouvoir un multilatéralisme véritablement démocratique. Dans ce contexte d’évolution des rapports de force internationaux, cet atelier pose la question de l’impact de la montée en puissance des pays émergents sur la gouvernance économique et les régulations commerciales et financières internationales.

Chinese social science is largely ignored in the Western world, precisely at a time in which scientific knowledge travels along new epistemological lines within a globalized context. The Western way of thinking is opening up to the Chinese way, though, and new horizons appear as it becomes impossible, in a context of cultural globalization, to ignore continental China. In this issue of Temporalités, we will analyse, in China, the societal realities produced by, and with, Chinese temporalities related to a “compartmentalized compressed modernity”.

L’émergence spectaculaire de l’Asie sur la scène internationale et son rôle moteur dans la mondialisation actuelle sont à l’origine de nouvelles réflexions sur cette région et sur ses interactions avec le reste du monde. Le séminaire « Le monde vu d’Asie : histoire et pratiques cartographiques dans les mondes asiatiques » s’inscrit dans cette perspective et plus précisément dans l’entreprise de décentrement de l’histoire du monde. Il entend participer pleinement à l’écriture collective d’une nouvelle histoire de l’Asie et du monde et promouvoir la recherche historique et épistémologique sur les pratiques cartographiques et les savoirs géographiques, qui contribuent à la construction des discours locaux, nationaux, régionaux ou mondiaux en Asie.

Chinese anthropology in France - conference
Envisagé comme une vitrine des recherches en anthropologie et en ethnologie de la Chine en langue française, ce colloque a pour objet de réunir la communauté en plein essor des anthropologues français et francophones spécialistes du monde chinois. Il est ouvert à l'ensemble des spécialistes du monde chinois (Taïwan et diasporas inclus) dont les recherches, basées sur des enquêtes de terrain menées dans la longue durée, s’inscrivent pleinement dans une démarche anthropologique. En effet, l’objectif de cette rencontre est avant tout disciplinaire, et vise à mettre en avant l'apport de l'anthropologie francophone sur le monde chinois.

Practices, Politics, and Policy in Premodern Societies (6th-17th Centuries)
Money is at once elusive and concrete. As a mode of economic exchange it exists within a relatively fixed playing field, with clearly delineated boundaries of benefits and costs. However, poor handling, bad advice, or even a bad turn at a game of chance can swallow money up in one fell swoop. The workshop will investigate this wide array of pre-capitalist, western and non-western contexts from the English Isles, Flanders, France, Germany, Italy, and China between the Middle Ages and Early Modern times.

Our aim is to explore various facets of 19th and 20th century historical research about ancient mathematical sciences, especially those attested to by sources written in Chinese, the languages of the Indian subcontinent and cuneiform script.

The Smaller European Powers and China in the Cold War, 1949-1989
This international conference aims to examine the policies of the smaller European powers towards China – and vice versa – during the Cold War. Thereby it focuses, on the European side, on both Western and Eastern Europe – regardless of whether a country was part of the NATO or the Warsaw Pact. Meanwhile, on the Chinese side, the conference proposes to include both Chinas, namely the People’s Republic of China (PRC) and the Republic of China (RoC). While this should allow for the analysis of different relational constellations, the chronological framework – that ranges from the Communist victory in China in 1949 to the fall of the Berlin Wall and the Tiananmen Square uprising in 1989 – should enable us to identify policy shifts and patterns.

Depuis une décennie, de nombreuses publications ont exploré les formes de mobilité et les stratégies des acteurs économiques – entrepreneurs, commerçants chinois et africains – qui contribuent à orienter les relations d'interdépendance entre la Chine et l'Afrique. Nous proposerons ici une autre perspective, en mettant au centre de l'analyse les multiples formes d'articulations du politique, de l'économique et des stratégies de catégories sociales qui semblent émerger avec le développement des relations entre la Chine et les pays africains.
