Gender, migration and citizenship
Revisiting Southeast Asian international marriages
In the current context of economic crisis, international marriages and family-related migrations are becoming increasingly restricted in many developed countries in the Global North, whereas countries in the Global South are adopting measures to protect local women from the trafficking and sexual exploitation that may arise from international marriages. These regulations of the “marriage market” pose challenges to single men and women looking for partners of a different nationality and for bi-national couples pursuing a family-formation project. For those who successfully immigrated in the country of their partner, social incorporation and cohesive family life are the next challenges in line. To shed light on the multi-faceted life of marriage migrants in the current age of economic crisis and increased border controls, this edited volume will take a closer look at Southeast Asian international marriages. It will also attempt to capture the dynamics of the interaction among macro-, meso- and microsociological factors that shape migrants’ trajectories, while taking into account their subjectivities and agency.

En croisant approches historiques, anthropologiques, sociologiques, géographiques et économiques, ce séminaire s’attachera à mettre en évidence les permanences dans les différentes manières de faire société en Asie du Sud-Est. Il s’emploiera également à interroger les mutations (colonisation, exode rural, développement économique, émergence de nouvelles classes,...) qu’ont connues ou connaissent les différents groupes sociaux et à repérer ruptures communes ou au contraire évolutions singulières dans la région.

Les familles transnationales et les migrantes philippines « ici » et « ailleurs »
En lien avec la parution du livre de Fresnoza-Flot, Mères migrantes sans frontières. La dimension invisible de l’immigration philippine en France (2013), cette journée d’études revient sur la question de l’émergence des familles dites « transnationales » et de la migration des femmes du Sud (notamment des Philippines) vers les pays du Nord. L’objectif est de conduire une réflexion sur ces deux phénomènes intimement liés.

Le program explore les utilisations des substances chimiques (licites, illicites, pharmaceutiques, cosmétiques, nutritionnelles, etc.) par les jeunes. Nous recrutons des candidat.e.s pour les terrains français, hollandais et indonésiens.

Le tourisme et la mer, un « enjeu du monde »
Deuxième colloque sino-européen du tourisme
Pour faire suite au Premier colloque sino-européen du tourisme intitulé La troisième révolution touristique organisé en juin 2011, les universités de Ningbo (Chine) et d’Angers (France) renouvellent l’expérience en proposant une seconde manifestation autour de « la mer » comme objet privilégié de réflexions et d’échanges. La pratique recréative de la mer devient aujourd’hui un phénomène mondial avec un renouvellement incessant des pratiques et avec l’émergence des mégapoles touristiques comme Dubaï, des lieux comme l’île de Hainan en Chine, l’archipel des Maldives ou encore le Nord-Est du Brésil. Si les impacts économiques, sociaux et médiatiques des politiques touristiques et leurs effets sur les aménagements des territoires ont déjà fait l’objet de nombreuses recherches et publications en sciences économiques et sociales (sociologie et géographie en particulier), doit-on y voir une relation mécanique, un allant de soi, entre mer et tourisme telle une « ressource » invariablement destinée à accueillir des pratiques touristiques ?

Îles, patrimoines et ethnicité dans l’aire indianocéanique
Cette journée d’étude, propose, à partir de cas détaillés, une lecture des reformulations historiques et des processus de patrimonialisation ; la constitution d’un patrimoine agissant tantôt comme un élément concourant à l’ethnicisation des rapports sociaux, tantôt à une sorte de « réconciliation nationale ». Les intervenants, géographes, cinéastes, anthropologues et ethnologues montreront que les préoccupations intellectuelles des acteurs de la patrimonialisation ne sont pas nécessairement celles de la population générale et viseront à déconstruire les éléments de rationalisations et de légitimations en référence aux notions fourre-tout de « tradition » et d' «identité » liée à cette politique de patrimonialisation – la préoccupation identitaire s'inscrivant dans le contexte de la globalisation des cultures et du pluralisme culturel, géré plus ou moins différemment par les sociétés insulaires de l’aire indianocéanique.

The panel will explore spatial configurations created in these contexts, questioning the forms of modernity expressed by architectural and urban projects. With the purpose of challenging a general assumption according to which Asian and especially Southeast Asian urban landscapes affected by recent developments tend toward irremediable standardization and “Westernization”, the panel will explore local expressions of modernity through the examination of projects pointing to a reinterpretation of forms of local heritages. -

How did individuals' geographical mobility contributed the circutation of knowledge in East Asia (16th-20th centuries)? In China, Korea and Vietnam, the bureaucratic systems dictated a specific mode of mobility of the elites. But the ways in which individual itineraries shaped the circulation of knowledge need to be studied not only for civil servants, but also for various socio-professional groups, such as the scholars privately employed by high officials, craftsmen, medical doctors, traders, Buddhist monks, and emperors themselves. To these groups should be added the actors of the globalisation of knowledge during this period. -

The Architecture of Southeast Asian Cities
How do Architectural and Urban Expressions of Modernity relate to Heritage ?
The conference is organised by the Contemporary Asian Architecture and Cities: Heritage and Projects research group, based in Paris. The conference will take place June 12-14 2013 at the National Superior Architecture School of Paris-Belleville (ENSAPB). The conference will deal with recent physical transformations and developments of Southeast Asian cities. Contemporary debates in urban studies often centre around the idea of a uniform kind of globalizing urbanization which is spreading worldwide. The conference will examine this idea as a hypothesis in light of the history of each city, the persistence of ancient urban morphologies, and heritage policies promoted by various Southeast Asian nations. -

Transforming South-East Asian Cities: a View from the Grassroots
7th EuroSEAS Conference – 7th groupe "Environment, cities and housing", panel 72
Based on empirical approaches, the aim of this panel is to analyze contemporary urban dynamics at the local scale in Southeast Asian cities. In particular we will address mechanisms of urban change, as they can be seen at the neighborhood level. With the ongoing transformations, both in city centers and in the peripheries, are there new forms of urban practices, of resistance? What is the role of the people at the grassroots in such transformations? These interactions can be read from such scales as the home, the street and the neighborhood. From this viewpoint, how can we consider urban oppositional processes, for instance a formal sector to an informal one, public actors to private ones, the authorities to citizens? -

Les matériaux de l’historien de l’Orient
Le colloque a pour objectif de réunir les spécialistes de l’Orient afin de leur donner l’occasion de présenter les matériaux sur lesquels ils travaillent, d’en exposer aussi bien l’intérêt que les spécificités. L’intitulé de cette rencontre doit être compris dans son acception la plus large, tant du point de vue géographique que disciplinaire : l’« Orient » est ce vaste périmètre qui va de Corfou à la mer du Japon ; les « matériaux » sont les documents textuels sous toutes leurs formes, les vestiges archéologiques, les œuvres artistiques, les données linguistiques et tout autre trace du passé ; enfin, l’« historien » est entendu comme celui qui tente de comprendre comment on vivait, pensait ou agissait autrefois. -

Chaque année, la Southeast Asian Linguistics Society (SEALS) organise un colloque international, alternativement dans un pays asiatique et un pays non-asiatique. En 2012, la XXIIe édition du colloque SEALS est organisée à Agay (France) par le SeDyL avec le soutien actif de : INALCO, LACITO, CASE, INSHS, IRD, Université d'Aix-Marseille, IRSEA/IrAsia, Maison Asie Pacifique. -

We intend in this workshop to reconsider how new technologies flow and circulate around the globe. One cannot ignore the obvious fact that we are seeing the emergence of new technological and industrial centres which accompany the rapid redistribution of economic power around the world; but one should also take into account the fact that technology is – and has always been – flowing and circulating in much more unexpected ways than predicted by the old-fashioned diffusionist models which are still prevalent, even in these times of globalisation. By privileging in this workshop (and in our collective project) a comparative approach between three very different geographical regions – South Asia, the Middle East and Europe – we hope to be able to propose an approach to technological flow, which will be sufficiently global and comparative, for going beyond the specificities of any particular culture or society, and which may really better help us understand the dynamics of technological circulations and the processes by which technologies are reinvented in different locations.
