Developing Societies and the Sustainable Development Goals
Challenges and Opportunities
In 2015, the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to be achieved by 2030 were defined. The goals include the eradication of poverty, access to quality and equitable education for all, environmental protection, and health for all. While the SDGs target the world in general, as each country faces at least one of the obstacles to development, it appears that developing countries, particularly those in Africa and South America, are the most concerned. This panorama raises questions to which researchers could provide an answer: how to make the SDGs intelligible to Africans and other Third World countries so that they can easily appropriate them? How much consideration is given to the multiple and diverse contexts among developing countries in the conceptualisation of the SDGs?

Medieval Borders and the Environment
This volume, provisionally titled Medieval Borders and the Environment, will be submitted to Brill to be included in the new series “Elements, Nature, Environment: Multidisciplinary Perspectives from the Ancient to the Early Modern World” edited by Dr. Marilina Cesario and Dr. Andreas Lammer. The volume’s goal is to provide a venue for interdisciplinary research on the time period between about 500 and 1500 or slightly later. It intends to promote study on underrepresented parts of the medieval world, broadly construed, as well as articles that examine interconnections across regions and cultures. Proposals for essays in english are warmly welcomed on the topic “borders, the elements, and the environment”.

This special issue of EchoGéo calls for contributions that focus on the modes of existence of machines in these peripheral areas, as critical materialities and unexplored archives of the current spatial, social, political or environmental reconfigurations. If machines have so rarely been studied, it is because their exogenous and a priori standardizing character is problematic. On the contrary, we formulate the hypothesis that these materialities are a source of creativity and memory and that they constitute a privileged archive for understanding the contemporaneity of these societies throughout the world. The aim is to show what machines do to these lands and, in turn, what these lands do to machines.

The Sustainable Development Goals under scrutiny
« Revue internationale des études du développement » n°253 (2023-3)
A new international framework for development, called the UN 2030 Agenda for sustainable development, emerged in 2015 as a result of the rise of sustainable development as a dominant paradigm for development and of the criticisms addressed to the MDGs. The new agenda established 17 development goals instead of 8 (MDGs). The SDGs made some progress compared to the MDGs. Because they target common challenges like climate change, the reach and legitimacy of the SDGs were extended. As we stand midway towards the set deadlines for achievement, it is time to question the relevance, foundations and the implementation of the SDGs. It also seems legitimate to question their universal and inclusive character, and their actual outcomes since 2015 by using critical and contexual approaches.

While the Paris Olympic and Paralympic games are set to begin in 2024, this international conference wishes to interrogate the history and practice of dance competitions, in connection to competitive sports events. If much has been written on competing, especially in an Olympic setting, dance has received less critical attention when it comes to its physical, artistic and social dimensions.

Call for papers - Representation
This internationally oriented symposium offers the opportunity to focus on ancient societies for which textual sources are limited and for which iconography can play a major role in their understanding. The aim of this meeting is to highlight the possibilities and perspectives that the iconographic approach can provide but also to consider its limits in order to establish how and to what extent it is possible to use iconography, alone or related to archaeological remains, to clarify the understanding of sociocultural practices.
