  Mind and Body Across Time and Discipline

  The two central ways of conceptualizing psyche–soma relations in the western tradition were, and still are, the Platonic and the Aristotelian paradigms. According to Plato, a human being is a combination of two distinct substances, a mortal body and an immortal soul. According to Aristotle, a human being is a unified substance: the soul (psuche) is the form of the body, and to describe the soul is to describe the characteristic powers of human beings, just as describing the soul of a pine tree is to describe the characteristic powers of pine trees. Human beings are seen on a continuous scale with all other beings, and to say they have a rational soul roughly means that they have a linguistic capacity that other beings lack.

  The Max Planck Research Group III investigates the emergence and development of the system of post-Tridentine global governance of the Catholic Church in depth from an interdisciplinary perspective over an extended period of time. It will do so by analysing the activity of the Congregations of the Council, the dicastery responsible for appropriately implementing the Council decisions in the entire Catholic world.  We are now looking to recruit as soon as possible (but no later than 1 April 2019) two doctoral students who will develop a doctoral thesis preferably focused on the history of the Congregation of the Council in the early modern period (XVI-XVIII century).

  Leonardo and Antiquity

  Conference at Hadrian's Villa

  To mark the five hundredth anniversary of Leonardo da Vinci’s death, the “Istituto Autonomo Villa Adriana e Villa d’Este - Villae” (Tivoli, Rome) is organizing a conference with the theme of: “Leonardo and Antiquity”, at Hadrian’s Villa. At the dawn of the 16th century, Leonardo da Vinci visited Villa Adriana, then known as “old Tivoli”. The conference in preparation intends to explore ways in which this journey influenced Leonardo's genius, also in the context of the time period and work of Leonardo's contemporaries and/or disciples. In the company of internationally recognized keynote speakers, the conference welcomes the participation of both Italian and foreign researchers and scholars who answer this call for papers, as a major focus of the conference will be to place Leonardo's trip to Tivoli within a broader cultural context. The deadline for the paper proposals is fixed at January 25th, 2019.

  Les notions de matérialité et de visualité constituent aujourd’hui deux champs de recherche majeurs dans le domaine des sciences humaines et sociales. Centrées autour de l’œuvre comme artefact et comme chose vue, elles permettent de nouer un riche dialogue entre l’histoire de l’art, l’anthropologie, la culture matérielle et l’histoire des sciences et des techniques, et elles renouvellent l’ensemble de l’interprétation iconographique. À partir d’études de cas, il s’agira donc de poser la rencontre entre le matériau, le signe et l’image, et de rendre compte des méthodes d’analyse engagées dans l’étude.

  We would like to question the spatial dimensions of hospitality, that is to say the way the possibility of hospitality can be conceived spatially. Correlatively, we would like to investigate the fact that the lived experience of hospitality corresponds to a temporal dynamic of gestures, relations, moments that are necessarily associated with spaces. Therefore, how does a dialogue take place, or not, in the design phase between these spatial and temporal dimensions (components) of hospitality? How is hospitality incorporated into the intentions of architects, landscape designers, artists, designers? How can one formulate in the very design phase architectural, landscape, design, artistic proposals which contribute towards hospitality?

  The objective of this workshop is to create the conditions for the emergence of a scientific community using digital collaborative tools within Ethiopian studies. There is no need to recall the scientific and technological context in which we live to understand the importance and challenges of this methodological revolution. Many initiatives have emerged over the past two decades, both in terms of the availability of digitized documentation and the tools to use it. After the first experiments, interoperability and sharing have become the key words, and Ethiopian studies must respond to these good practices.

  Diversions in ethnographical observation

  Les outils d'évaluation, réputés objectifs, semblent désormais faire autorité dans l'organisation du travail, comme par exemple l'usage de l'évaluation chiffrée dans le néomanagement privé et les politiques publique (santé, police, recherche...). La montée en puissance des outils d'évaluation chiffrés suscite aujourd'hui de nombreuses analyses. La composante critique de ces travaux peut apparaitre parfois globale et externe au sens où elles font l'économie de l'analyse de l'appropriation de ces outils par les individus. C'est sur ce plan qu'un détour par l'observation des pratiques nous paraît utile car ces outils se présentent comme de plus en plus intriqués à l'action quotidienne. Ce numéro propose de contourner la critique de principe de ces outils pour faire place à une sociologie empirique en privilégieant l'observation directe des interactions de travail notamment dans le cadre d'un retour réflexif sur des pratiques professionnelles.
