Silence(d): Illusory Absences and Denied Presences

The doctoral conference Silence(d): Illusory Absences and Denied Presences aims to stimulate reflection on silence not only as the absence of voice or sound, but as a device that structures narratives, archives, memories, and processes of knowledge production.

    Khôra

“Angelaki: Journal of the Theoretical Humanities”, special issue (33.5)

This special issue of Angelaki: New Work in the Theoretical Humanities - book series invites contributions that revisit the concept of khôra, introduced in Plato’s Timaeus as a “third kind” beyond being and becoming, a matrix, a receptacle, and reinterpreted in contemporary philosophy, most notably by Derrida. Situated between presence and absence, intelligibility and materiality, khôra resists stable categorization while remaining indispensable for thinking space, inscription, and receptivity. We seek papers that engage khôra across disciplines, exploring its implications for spatial theory, media, politics, ecology, and aesthetics, as well as its limits and possible reconfigurations today.

The overarching theme for the 10th ITRA World Conference is The Zeitgeist in Toys & Games is designed to decipher and understand the many ways toys and games have shaped and reflected who we are, and have changed throughout history. Looking at the past, present, and future of playthings, the question is not so much what the zeitgeist in toys and games should be – but rather how and what they contribute to the multiple and potentially conflicting constellations of ideas, values and norms that come to characterize particular epochs.

    Haunting(s): Multidisciplinary Approaches

The complexity of haunting lies in its ability to encapsulate the interplay between the seen and unseen, the tangible and intangible, inviting scholars to unravel its intricacies and understand its implications across diverse facets of human experience. This two-day conference aims to bring together a diverse range of global researchers in any discipline whose works draws upon ‘haunting’ in some capacity, to facilitate cross-disciplinary discussions and establish a network of scholars working at the forefront of research in this area. We invite expressions of interest from anyone whose research engages with any aspect of haunting and is working in literature, philosophy, history, cultural and media studies, music, modern languages, sociology, and others.

Language, end of life, death and bereavement: an interdisciplinary perspective

Workhop - Languages and Language at the Crossroads of Disciplines (LLcD) conference

The workshop aims to initiate an interdisciplinary discussion by convening linguists along with scholars from other disciplines with an interest in language, such as philosophy or psychology, who share a common interest in end-of-life, death and bereavement issues. It will be informed by the following research questions: what are the linguistic representations of death and end of life? What are the similarities and differences between healthcare practitioners, patients and (bereaved) relatives in terms of their representation of death and end of life? To what extent can health care practitioners’ communication practices impact the process of bereavement? What linguistic resources can be put in place to avoid the silence that surrounds death-related topics?

International Conference for an Inclusive Digital Society

This conference, organized in the context of celebrating 600 years of KU Leuven, provides a forum to exchange knowledge and inspire each other to contribute to a positive digital society. We invite scholars, citizens, industry professionals, government representatives, and members of non-profit organizations to join us in this crucial conversation, because we need each other to properly grasp the polyvocality and complexity of our current and future digital society. Our conference pays attention to how we, as individuals, communities and society shape digital technologies as well as how these technologies shape critical societal domains such as health & well-being, learning & education, media & culture, democracy & civic engagement, and work & organization.

Heritage Cities and Exclusion. Places, Spaces and Thresholds of the “Other”

The Journal of Architectural Design and History, n.4 (2025)

The fourth issue of The Journal of Architectural Design and History intends to explore the theme of exclusion in its various forms, investigating the relationship between the historical city and the architectures that, with their spaces and forms, define places of urban exclusion in different historical, geographical, political and social contexts. We invite the authors to investigate the subject of exclusion in its broadest sense: from the most traditional exclusionary categories (e.g. prisons, asylums, hospices, hospitals) to more lateral and less explored interpretations, which also investigate the theme of exclusion in terms of exclusivity, gender, ethnicity, census and lifestyle differences, or the absence of life (e.g. special schools, holiday villages and resorts, suburbs and banlieues, brothels, cemeteries).

    Echoes of Conflict

Health Consequences of War and Violence Across Generations

The international conference Echoes of Conflict: Health Consequences of War and Violence Across Generations aims to explore the enduring impacts of war and violence on individuals and communities, with a focus on their physical, mental, and societal dimensions. Marking eighty years since the end of the Second World War, this conference seeks to shift the focus from global political consequences to the intimate effects of war on health, emphasizing transgenerational outcomes. By examining governmental and societal responses, as well as the experiences of affected families and individuals, the conference will provide a comprehensive understanding of the lasting legacy of conflict. The event will also explore how mass violence, displacement, and regime changes have shaped societies and influenced the health of subsequent generations.

The Armenian Genocide: New Interpretations and Cross-Disciplinary Conversations

The study of the Armenian genocide often remains confined to restricted circles of specialists and interdisciplinarity is too rarely promoted. And, although comparative research is praised, it is frequently reduced to the juxtaposition of case studies. Research on the Armenian genocide is now ready to address more cross-cutting issues and to fully contribute to broader discussions on mass violence. Therefore, this conference asks: how can the social sciences, memory studies, and genocide studies contribute to a broader understanding of the Armenian genocide and its aftermath? And reciprocally: what is the contribution of research on the Armenian genocide to our understanding of mass crimes and to the social sciences?

    Violent Turns: Sources, Interpretations, Responses

The aim of this international conference is to provide researchers with an interdisciplinary platform to investigate and debate the question of contemporary irruptions of political violence and to inquire into the different responses intended to counteract violence. When and why do individuals, groups, and societies come to believe that peaceful means and legal avenues of redress, including non-violent civil disobedience, are insufficient or improper to achieve a social or political goal and to view violent action as morally legitimate and necessary for change? Can one identify trends shaping recourse to violence by parts of the populace? What role does state violence play in the dialectic? When, if ever, is political violence legitimate? How can violence be averted?

Toys Matter: The Power of Playthings

The overarching conference theme, Toys Matter: The Power of Playthings, is designed to span the role toys play in our individual and collective identities, the various ways they reflect and shape our worlds (both positively or negatively), and the impact of technology, environmental concerns and societal/cultural crises on toy design, manufacture and use. Sessions will provide toy scholars and industry professionals opportunities to reflect on extant toy research while looking forward to expand our understanding of what counts as a toy, the power of playthings, and the many ways they matter -- for both children and adults. We invite work that examines the power of playthings both historically and in our ever-changing worlds, especially as we navigate these precarious and even perilous times. All play objects (i.e., physical, digital or hybrid) are included in the scope of toys to be discussed including games and indoor and outdoor play spaces.

Re-inventing/reconstructing cosmopolitanism in contested spaces and post-conflict zones

The purpose of this international conference is to encourage a multi- and transdisciplinary discussion of one of the core analytical and normative problems of our troubled present: the challenge of cultivating inclusive civic and social spaces at a moment when difference is ubiquitously threatened by exclusionary ethno-nationalisms, the construction of material and symbolic walls of separation, spaces of conflict, and violence-laden representations of the essential alienness of cultural, political, and religious others.

    Wellbeing, Harm, and Religion

International Religious Studies PhD Conference 2021

Different conceptions of harm and wellbeing derived from different religious traditions retain their relevance in many locales across the globe even today, as they did in history. They intertwine(d) with “secular” medical practices; religious actors can formulate stances towards modern medical technologies, like vaccination and blood transfusion; and religion sometimes articulates alternative theories about the nature and origin of various diseases and about their treatment. With this conference, we aim to create a platform for the study of the intersections amongst religion, health, and diverse cultural conceptions of harm and wellbeing.

Ambiances souterraines.
