  Comparing Militaries in the Long 19th Century

  The history of military development in modern times is one of mutual observation and comparison. During the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, political and military leaders continuously evaluated the power of their friends and foes. Members of the military, politicians and activists looked to foreign forces for models to avoid or emulate, using comparisons to justify their own military and defense policies. The workshop Comparing Militaries in the Long 19^th Century explores the means and methods by which experts and decision-makers observed and compared foreign armies and navies from the era of the Napoleonic Wars to the inter-war period.

  Pratiques musicales ludiques au Moyen Âge et à l'époque moderne, 1200-1800

  La musique de Luther, les bals masqués à la cour de Louis XVI, les processions et les mystères dans les villes du Moyen Âge tardif, le théâtre musical et l'opéra ou les mariages ruraux peints par Brueghel - sont tous des exemples bien connus de pratiques musicales en Europe pendant le Moyen-Âge et l'Époque moderne. Au-delà de ces sujets il existe des nombreuses pratiques musicales, notamment associées aux pratiques ludiques. En abandonnant les thèmes bien connus pour d'autres qui n'ont pas encore fait l'objet de recherches ou qui sont considérés comme des curiosités, le focus sur les pratiques ludiques déplace les sujets à première vue périphériques et ambivalents au centre de l'intérêt.

  This workshop for PhD candidates aims to reassess how far stakeholder relations in different companies prove the existence of a specific West German governance compromise from the 1950’s through the 1980’s. Therefore, we would like to invite contributors who are researching companies in Germany as well as in other countries.

  The franco-german spring school "Science and Values" will discuss how and to what extent science implies or contains values, scientific knowledge influences values, values have an impact on scientific knowledge claims. The spring school will focus on how science contributes to – and at the same time potentially limits – cultural identity and also on the interrelations between science and society, espe-cially as they are shaped by requiring relevance for applications.

  The communicative construction of transnational political spaces and times

  An interdisciplinary conference

  The conference primarily seeks to examine the construction, transformation and maybe also dissolution of transnational political spaces as they are constituted through language, social interaction and symbolic practices. It focuses on European and Western states and societies in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries during which national identifications became increasingly challenged by other representations transcending the frame of the nation.The aim of this conference is, furthermore, to stimulate and advance the interdisciplinary analysis of political transnationalism by inviting contributions particularly from the fields of history, sociology, and political science.
